'Climate change is the biggest story of our time, yet very few novelists are ready to grapple with this.' - Cover reveal for internationally best-selling author John Ironmonger's adventure novel 'The Wager and the Bear'!

Set between a sleepy Cornish village and a doomed Arctic iceberg, The Wager and the Bear interweaves the lives of headstrong young idealist Tom and ambitious politician Monty, whose angry spat in a local pub sparks a simmering rivalry that follows them across decades. As past and present entangle the two men in a web neither can escape, they find themselves face-to-face on a drifting glacier with only a starving polar bear for company.

Propulsive, heart-stopping and tragic, the novel explores how actions taken in anger can ripple through history, as well as the enduring power of love and the human stories at the heart of the climate crisis.

From futuristic colonies to drab estates, SJ Bradley's inventive stories showcase remarkable range. With lyrical prose and psychological depth, Bradley illuminates the quiet heroism pulsing through seemingly ordinary lives. Beleaguered, yet resourceful social workers battle towering workloads; a harassed elderly childminder collapses under the strain; a victim of domestic abuse strikes out for freedom and disgruntled workers in dead-end jobs dream of a brighter future. These vividly rendered tales trace hard-won solace through small acts of courage, exploring grief, ambition, and belonging. Gritty yet tender, "Maps of Imaginary Towns" celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.

'We are swept into another era, one of coaches and carriages, of balls and ballgowns, ladies and gentlemen. Recently orphaned Lillias Gilfillan is a wealthy young woman, looked after by her aunt, Evelina, as wise as Lillias is naïve.' 🔵 For those who are new to your writing, what can they expect?

I write both short stories and longer fiction. My debut collection of short stories, The Truth Has Arms and Legs, was published by Fly On The Wall Press in July 2023. While the stories are quite varied - some contemporary, some historical - they all show characters at points of change. Many readers have told me the stories moved them deeply which of course, for a writer, is wonderful to hear. I also draw inspiration from local history, nature and landscapes. If I had to sum them up, I’d say they're stories of change, resilience and hope.

🔵 Can you tell us about any of your new work you plan to share?

I’m very excited to share some new pieces. One is a recently completed story in which a flippant disagreement leads a family to address an underlying tragedy they’ve never talked about. Another is a piece of creative non-fiction, about the pioneering journalist Evelyn Irons, which recently won second prize in the Society of Women Writers and Journalists’ 130th anniversary competition.

🔵 What are you most looking forward to about your event?

I love meeting readers, answering questions and hearing responses to my work. I’m also looking forward to talking to the Institute’s Programme Manager, Chelsea, who I’m sure will have some interesting questions up her sleeve! I hope people will sit back with a glass of wine, relax and enjoy an evening of words and stories.

'A powerful and accomplished novel. Laura Fish seamlessly transports us into a richly drawn landscape and immerses us in the complex and layered life of her protagonist Koliwe as she confronts an ugly underbelly of international aid work in the 1990s. Fish is a talented and skilful writer who deserves serious attention and a wide readership' - Sharon Duggal

THE NAMING OF MOTHS by features stories of magical realism, myths and legends re-imagined, where all the characters are undergoing transformation or facing a pivotal moment of change in their lives. People and animals interchange their shapes. Story landscapes flit from fairy-tale woods to urban homes. Here love, hope and kindness weave between the realities of man’s endless talent for cruelty.
