A 3D depiction of the D-Day in wool art entitled ‘The Longest Yarn’ is on show at Southwell Minster from 9th until 27th September.

With 80 displays, each measuring one metre in length, depicting scenes of the world’s largest amphibious invasion, The Longest Yarn is something quite unique. The scenes include the build-up to D-Day in England, the horrors on the Landing Beaches and the bloody inland battles.

Created with guidance from professional historians to be accurate, each scene has been selected by the creator to depict the story of this momentous day in history. Some of the scenes depict actual WW2 veterans that were in the theatre of war in Normandy on 6th June 1944 plus the lesser-known events in local towns and villages in Normandy. One scene even depicts the famous moment Lord Lovat and Piper Bill Millin crossed Pegasus Bridge, and another where he plays his pipes on Sword Beach. Piper Millin’s son donated his father’s favourite jumper to The Longest Yarn which was unravelled and the wool used to knit the figures of Piper Bill.

Over 1,000 knitters from across the world, including the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France and even people with NATO stationed in Europe, have joined in to help make this project happen.

Admission is free (donations welcome) and tickets are not needed.

People across Nottinghamshire are being urged to take a unique chance to influence the future of policing, crime prevention and victim support services over the next five years.

Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden has opened a public consultation his new Police and Crime Plan.

The key pillars of Commissioner Godden’s draft proposals include putting victims and communities first, strengthening work with partner agencies and ensuring effective and resilient policing.

Communities across Nottinghamshire are now being asked for their views on what issues should be prioritised, including greater visibility and access to neighbourhood policing, tackling serious violence including knife crime, and better support for victims of crime.

The consultation runs until 2nd September. Make sure your voice is heard by visiting https://forms.office.com/e/HrV42QRArL to fill in the questionnaire.

Gill Edwards Studio – Open Studio this weekend - 24th & 25th August

Southwell-based painter Gill transitioned from a long career in textile design to painting in 2019, focusing on shape, pattern, and colour. The Art Buyer Gallery in Surrey describes her work as ‘a love affair with small objects that fill our homes with personality.’ Inspired by her ceramics collection and mark-making process, Gill’s paintings often blend abstract elements with familiar shapes. A recent month-long train trip to Norway is influencing her latest work, capturing the beauty of isolated huts in snowy landscapes.

Gill also produces high-quality digital prints and popular greeting cards. Her art is exhibited in galleries across the UK and has achieved international sales.

Visitors will be welcomed into her Open Studio at 15 Minster Chambers, Church Street, Southwell NG25 0HD (in courtyard next to the Minster shop) on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August, 10am – 5pm. For more information see www.gilledwardsstudio.com

It’s the Robin Hood Festival Finale this weekend Visit Sherwood Forest from 24th to 26th August 10am-4pm

The Sherwood Outlaws headline the weekend’s events by taking to the arena to present their all-action (and often humorous) take on the legend of Robin Hood. Let battle commence as the wily Sheriff attempts yet again to subdue the outlaws and capture their heroic leader.

Also appearing this weekend are the marvellous masters of mirth, the Medieval Maniax - giggle and guffaw as the fatal fools amuse and bemuse you. These award-winning street-performers perform all over the world and are ready to make you laugh with their historical hysterics. A spectacular show full of music, jokes and illusions

Festival folk performing this weekend include:
🌳 Sir Robert of Wentbridge - Wonderful teller of the tales of Robin Hood.
🌳 College of Chivalry - Historical re-enactment and combat display society.
🌳 Helter Skelter - Circus skills performers and entertainers par excellence.
🌳 Nathaniel Bagshot - Magic tricks and clever conjuring.
🌳 Jim Munro - Tales and ballads of the Greenwood.
🌳 Go Active Falconry - Interactive bird of prey experience.
🌳 Bill Brookman - Marvellous musical mayhem for all the family.
🌳 Simple Tom - Roving tomfoolery from this Festival favourite.
🌳 Sloe Gin - Medieval musicians to welcome you to the Festival.
🌳 de Mowbray’s Musicke - Wonderful traditional music from the Middle Ages.

With the exception of some activities, admission to the festival is free, but there is a special event parking charge. Dogs on lead are welcome.
