is our latest BRICKS Voices digital cover star ⭐️

When pondering the fashion favourites of the drag world, those of us with taste would be hard-pressed to think of an artist quite as memorable as Violet Chachki. Known for her couture runway-ready style, outspoken opinions and signature snatched waist, Violet has made a name for herself not just as a drag performer, but as a unique, creative force that seamlessly blends burlesque aesthetics, aerial acrobatics and high fashion into one transfixing presentation.

Since winning RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 in 2015, Violet and her teeny-tiny waist have travelled the globe, attending Fashion Weeks in London, Paris and Milan, walking the runway for Moschino, and even gracing the pink carpet of MET Gala in 2019 for the Camp: Notes on Fashion exhibition, becoming one of the first drag queens at the event, alongside RuPaul. The artist most recently underwent a residency at the infamous Parisian cabaret Crazy Horse, a “bucket list moment” which saw the likes of Dita Von Teese and Christian Louboutin seated in attendance.

At our link in bio, BRICKS Contributing Editor .bilal hopped on Zoom with the diva herself to chat about the superstar’s favourite fashion inspirations, her love for cabaret and the importance of staying authentic in your creative vision.

Marking its first time showing outside of its Danish homeland, will be taking to the French capital for SS25, and no, it’s not a one-off.

Despite being arguably the most well-known Danish brand with 700 global stockists and 70 stores, Ganni has not shown at Copenhagen Fashion Week for the past two seasons.

“Ganni has established itself globally, and as we enter our next chapter of growth, showcasing in Paris is a natural evolution for our brand equity and scale,” said Ganni CEO Laura Du Rusquec in a statement.

What are your thoughts? In a tough fashion sales market, which is more important? Community and sticking to your roots or prioritising global growth?

Highlights from the festival’s third day included Beabadoobee performing her new #1 album ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ on a hot pink guitar, Ethel Cain covering Kim Carnes ‘Bette Davis Eyes’, and Mitski’s highly-theatrical debut festival headline performance, featuring a stirring 24-song set that charted the entirety of her celebrated decade-plus career 💫

As for the attendees, tens of thousands of guests descended on Victoria Park 🌳 Jorts, carabiners and colourful cowboy boots were seen aplenty among joyous crows celebrating the festival’s predominantly female line-up. Many attendees attested to wearing thrifted outfits, including many finds and ’s hand embroidered dress 🍒

Meet transformative artist 🎨

Mei Pang, better known by her online moniker, has mastered the art of creating stunning makeup that looks like no other. The Toronto-based makeup artist found a home in brushes, colours and her creativity. Whether it’s lips, butterflies, flowers, waves or snowflakes – she knows how to do it all, and she does it well.

“I challenge what the structure of femininity is [by] being covered in tattoos and having no hair. I want to be known as that girl who does the experimental. I want people to know that there’s more than one way of just being comfortable,” says Mei.

At our link in bio, the artist speaks to about finding inspiration on Tumblr, how her sobriety unlocked her creativity & mantras from her father ✨

“We’re so lucky to be getting the formidable panty mountain,” charity I Support The Girls posted on X, referencing the huge pile of underwear Charli and Billie climb towards the end of the music video.

The US-based charity works internationally to distribute underwear and period products to those experiencing domestic violence, homelessness and hardship.

It says it has received 10,000 pairs which have “overtaken” its warehouse.

This year’s marked a historic moment as an unprecedented 55,000-60,000 attendees gathered in central London to march in solidarity with the community 🏳️‍⚧️

Showcasing a vibrant display of unity and peaceful resilience against a backdrop of increasing intolerance, discrimination, and hostility, the sixth instalment of the event kicked off at Langham Place at 2pm before ending at Wellington Arch later that afternoon 🏳️‍⚧️

The lineup featured powerful speeches from prominent figures, including Heartstopper’s , Trans Legal Clinic founder , and activist .

“It’s so important to be in this room right now,” said at a press lunch ahead of the march at . “What we’re here for is way bigger than us, it goes far beyond that. Since about 2016, we’ve seen a lot more hostility, a lot of negative conversation, dehumanising, and a lack of empathy and understanding of an experience that is bigger than the person that is making it so hateful and spiteful.”

Salvaging and celebrating the past life of found materials, she reformulates them into new articles of fascination with an idiosyncratic approach that combines conceptual reimagining, careful handwork and fine detailing.

“The garments are records of a process that is about finding beauty in uncommon places, following your intuition and dedicating yourself to realising that moment of inspiration with as much integrity and skill as you can muster,” says the Northumberland-born, Newcastle-raised designer.

Folklore-inspired label .swim is telling stories through swimwear 💦

Growing up in the small town of Volzhsky in southwestern Russia, didn’t start out her fashion career with swimwear in mind.

“It started when I tried surfing for the first time on a holiday in Bali while at university,” says the Russian-born, London-bred and California-based designer. “I could find either a hundred wholly practical wetsuits that were ridiculously ugly, or one or two cute or pretty ones that were just as ridiculously uncomfortable to wear. At that point, it seemed to me there was a pretty caving gap in the market for a combination of function and style, and so began the dream.”

Baba got to work designing her dreamy, ultrathin neoprene bikinis and wetsuits while finishing her degree in London before relocating to her LA-based studio, where she carefully constructs her garments in small batches.

01/07/2024

Upon first laying eyes on .studios’ signature seaweed bags, it’s clear that nature serves as the brand’s core inspiration. Like many emerging talents, the brand’s designers – Jonas Sayed Gammal Bruun and Sophia Martinussen – have experimented with sustainable design techniques to create consciously and reduce their environmental impact. But for this Copenhagen-based creative duo, the natural world provides more than just aesthetic inspiration – investigating the dichotomies and nuances of our complex human connections with the environment.

Aligned with its ethos of land stewardship, the brand crafts its garments locally using innovative or upcycled textiles enhanced with a neutral palette of all-natural dyes created from things like coffee, rust, and even bog water.

“Our use of the local bog to dye our fabrics [gives] something to nature that was initially taken from it, letting it reclaim this piece of itself that has been borrowed and shaped by humans,” says Jonas.

At our link in bio, Jonas and Sophia share how trial-and-error, privatised nature and giving back to the bog has inspired their brand.

Ahead of his debut performance, chats with about his new role in , what he’s learnt since his Strictly success & why knowing what to keep private is the trick to a happy life in the public eye ✨️

“Come to the Kit Kat Club to escape but also to learn from our mistakes in the hopes we don’t continue to peddle back. Life is so precious and there’s a lot of evil out there but we can be beacons of hope. Tiny ripples of love and joy can go a long way,” says Layton.

While slipping into something latex is often-times associated with dark and sweaty s*x clubs, do******ix cat-suits, and q***r pop star’s wardrobes, 28-year-old Gemma Pickerill launched as a way to expose a softer, more feminine side to fetishwear.

“We don’t mass produce and we don’t follow trends,” the Cheshire-born designer explains. In fact, each one of Soft Skin’s pieces – made to order from Pickerill’s London studio – showcase the designer’s unique POV on fetishwear, from rubbery hoods to translucent bow bags, tailored raincoats, and mediaeval ruffle collars.

At our link in bio, BRICKS meets Pickerill to hear more about finding her niche within latex and fetishwear, the changes she’d like to see within the fashion industry, and her favourite do******ix-run podcast.

Due to harmful misconceptions that dwell on the patriarchy, health professionals often disregard autism as a viable diagnosis for cisgender women and gender diverse people. This all too common error has left autistic women and gender nonconforming people wondering; Would things be different if I were a boy? Could I have been diagnosed earlier? Would I have received support sooner?

At our link in bio, BRICKS contributor speaks with , and .e.lle about their experiences seeking diagnosis and support as autistic women and gender nonconforming people.

From #13 The ‘Be Tender’ Issue, writer embraces the fear of cringe that comes with sharing creative work, accepting that embarrassment is a worthwhile side effect of happiness ✨️

“I started writing poetry at just seven years old – after winning a school-wide competition, I went on to perform in youth competitions. The poem that started it all was a haiku about teapots (laden with clunky metaphors). It didn’t occur to me that this was an embarrassing hobby until eleven years old when social-awareness set in. Standing out was something I wanted to avoid, as most kids do, and so I suppressed my creativity outside of English lessons and attached my identity to whatever was popular that week – denim skirts over leggings, friendship bracelets, tamagotchis. This continued for almost a decade. I wrote in private, daily, but never shared my work, picking perceived popularity and hierarchy over sharing my passion. In doing this I was, unknowingly, shutting myself off from joy and success.”

is blurring the lines between dreams and reality 🌙 ☁️ The Scottish-raised, Paris-based producer and label head crafts sonic landscapes that defy convention and challenge the senses on new album ‘Dennis’.

“I first meet Navarrete on the bustling set of our cover shoot before he sets off to London’s infamous venue Fabric to play a set at long-time collaborator and friend Shygirl’s club night,” says . “Days later, as we connect over a virtual interview, he is poised for another venture, preparing to hit the road to tour with his band, . It’s a tireless pattern that seems to define Navarrete’s world – caught between the pulsating energy of the nightlife scene and the quiet introspection of creative exploration. It was against this backdrop that the polymath’s third and latest studio album Dennis began to take shape – a sonic journey that blurs the lines between dream and reality, consciousness and oblivion.”

In her new book ‘Sluts: The Truth About Slutshaming & What We Can Do To Fight It’, investigates the contemporary culture of slutshaming 📚

“No matter what I’m reporting, slutshaming comes up somewhere,” Ashley explains. “I’ve reported on why people cheat and when people keep their s*xual fantasies away from their long-term partners. I’ve gone to a swingers resort in Jamaica and reported on that. I’ve gone to Japan and reported on the s*x culture there. No matter what you’re looking at, in all these different problems that I investigate in s*x and relationships, somewhere along the way slutshaming comes up.”
