Posted @withregram • @djspoony We dont often enough get a chance to give people their flowers whilst they are still here so when we can, we should.Yesterday I was able to say 'Thank You' to the brilliance of Shalamar as they were inducted in to the 'Music Walk of Fame'in Camden. When I say 'Thank-You', I said a little bit more than that...'I was brought up in Hackney by my late great mother. Coming from St Kitts, she was a lover of soca and calypso (she was always playing it) as well as Dorothy Moore and Millie Jackson. She was the person that introduced me to the magic of soul music.Aged 11, my football manager used to get 6 of us in his Mini and on his way to and from matches would be playing us tunes through his Pioneer system. There were a couple of records that I clearly remember, 1 was ‘A Night To Remember’ the other one ‘There It Is’. At the time I had no idea who made these records but I knew I loved them. I was 15 when I first started DJing and it was around this time I realised that aswell as these two records, this band also made 'I Can Make You Feel Good' and to highlight the brilliance, these were all on the SAME album. What a brilliant body of work ‘Friends’ is.‘Over and Over’, ‘Second Time Around’ and ‘My Girl Loves Me’ were BIG tunes for me too. Our love affair was in full effect, they just didn’t know.As I got a little older and was now spreading my musical wings, I'd spend a lot of time listening to recordings (on cassette) of parties from the big soul and rare groove sounds. Rapattack, Funky Express and Beat Freak were my faves. I fell in love ‘Sweeter as the Day Goes By’ the first time I heard it but the one that got me was ‘Good Feelings’. One day randomly the melody came into my head and with modern technology I was able to find out that the record I’d adored for years was actually made by one of my favourite bands. Last night as we spoke Carrie Lucas said, "I know for sure Dick and Don are smiling down on us". 48 years after Don Cornelius, Dick Griffey and Carrie Lucas opened the Soul Train Club in California, 47 years after Soul Train Records released the first records by The Whispers, Carrie Lucas and Shalamar (later part of Solar Records), this is proof that such great legacies and music never dies.
