HIRAETH | observations from isfryn

At the top of the bank, at the border with the common land, I found the hare. There are no border guards here, only hazel and stock fences. The gates and barbed wire serve a different purpose.

The Hare, though broadly free from man-made borders, was a timely reminder of the borderlines that exist between countries, between cultures, between people and, within each of us.

Filmed in mid Wales, August 2022.

ISFRYN which translates from the Welsh as 'under the bank' refers to an area of ancient common land and neighbouring fields in mid Wales. It is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

This is an ongoing project that offers an opportunity to capture extended moments - observations - of both wildlife and farming within the landscape they both inhabit.

Hiraeth is the eleventh film in the series.

THE WILD TOUR

by Daniel Bye and Boff Whalley

In May 2021, Daniel Bye and Boff Whalley set off from Northam Burrows, on Devon's north coast. They aimed to run 120 miles to the south coast, finishing in Dartmouth.

They stopped along the way in fields, farm yards, chapels, barns and orchards, to perform their show These Hills Are Ours.

This is the story of what they found - about the relationship between wild and controlled, about land ownership and about how far we are prepared to go for what we believe in.

The Wild Tour of Devon was a celebration of everything we'd all been unable to do over the past year: perform live, sing together, and run in places too wild to be accessible from our front doors.

It's a comeback tour with a difference.

THE HALSTOW WASSAIL

The Halstow Wassail takes place each year on a Devon cider farm that has been in the Gray family since the late 1600s.

Featuring singer- songwriter Jim Causley, Dartmoor folk singer Bill Murray, and the shanty crew Mariners Away, the film in a single uninterrupted camera shot documents this traditional event.

Unlike other wassails, The Halstow Wassail is a celebration of the microbial life of cider-making, with each verse acknowledging the importance of the yeasts and other fungi, bacteria and moulds, that live on the orchards and apples, in the barns, press and barrels, and in the cider itself.

The Halstow Wassail is one of several artistic experiments with local folkways associated with cider-making made by the artist Simon Pope in collaboration with singer-songwriter Jim Causley.

Commissioned by Arts & Culture at the University of Exeter and The Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter City Council with additional support from Arts Council England.

AFTER THE RAIN | observations from isfryn

The wonder here in many ways is the unexpected.

The rain arrived and I was forced to take refuge under a canopy of hawthorn blossom. It was only then I noticed the Redstarts and their home.

Filmed in mid Wales, June 2021.

After the Rain is the tenth film in the series.
