Cardiff U3A group spend the day in Cwmbran
🙂 "I think it's the sunshine and of course, the attraction of Cwmbran."
🚂 Around 55 Cardiff residents jumped on a train this morning and spent the day in Cwmbran. They are all members of Cardiff u3a (the University of the Third Age) who have over 1,000 branches across the UK. Each u3a has its own range of interest groups that are set up and led by its members. Today's visit was by Cardiff u3a's 'Slow Train Coming' group who visit a new place each month to: "Have a walk. Investigate the local history of the area. Maybe visit a museum, gallery or exhibition. Take in statues, sculptures and blue plaques and architecture."
👀 I was at Cwmbran Boating Lake this morning and spotted a large group of people which was unusual for 11.30am on a Thursday. Ted Richards, the group's leader, told me: "I'm a believer you can always find interesting things wherever you go."
He said today's trip was their "record turnout" and added: "I think we've got 56, 57, today. I think it's the sunshine and of course, the attraction of Cwmbran. I'd have never have guessed. "It's a good one for a big group because of this path, it's a lovely path from the station down here, around the lake and back. Not too many roads to cross."
During this video he talks about the two Cwmbran sculptures the group were visiting, coffee and art at Llantarnam Grange, and even 2024 World snooker finalist Jak Jones and 'one half of Dirty Sanchez Lee Dainton.
Around 50 people from Cardiff got on a train to Cwmbran train station this morning and have been on a guided walk around the boating lake and along the river path back into the town centre to Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre. Find out why later. :-)
Come on a tour of Upcycle Torfaen- a 1,500 sq metre warehouse in Cwmbran- packed of items saved from landfill. Full story and pics to follow later
The ' 'largest school choir in the world' event held last week in Birmingham
This gave me goosebumps! What a spectacle! A short clip from the 'largest school choir in the world' event last week in Birmingham. Pupils from the choirs at both the Federation of Blenheim Road and Coed Eva schools and Greenmeadow Primary took part and it's fair to say they won't forget this experience.

Disabled paddleboarder Victoria Hewitt completes the last leg of her 35-mile charity trip along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal
"I'm disabled so moving around on land isn't my strong point." Moments after finishing the last day of her paddleboarding adventure from Brecon to Cwmbran, Victoria Hewitt spoke to Cwmbran Life. As well as raising money for a charity that campaigns for cleaner water in the UK, she used a litter pick to collect rubbish from the canal and bank along the route. It was lovely to chat with her and see the support on the towpath for today's final leg from members of the Bridge 46 to Five Locks Group🙂
Parkrun Cwmbran was so close to breaking its record of 297 participants this morning at Cwmbran Boating Lake. A total of 286 people ran, jogged or walked their way around the 5km route :-)
John Swain's funeral procession to Gwent Crematorium
Listening to people's stories and sharing them on Cwmbran Life always puts a smile on my face. This one was a bit unusual as it was a funeral. In the last week, I've chatted to two of John Swain's children about the wonderful tribute they were planning for his journey to his funeral service. And today I was able to see his procession head off on a tour of Cwmbran and arrive at Gwent Crematorium before sitting among the mourners to hear the memories from the celebrant. I know the comments on Cwmbran Life have been enjoyed by members of his family and that's put a smile on my face. RIP John.
Thanks to Pete Morgan who says he caught a Kingfisher on camera at Cwmbran Boating Lake today :-)
