Paris Photo 2023 begins today and throughout the duration of the festival we’ll be highlighting some of the fabulous monochrome work that has caught our eye.

Today we share with you Oleksandr Suprun’s timeless image, Spring in Forest. Lilies of the Valley, 1975.

Born in 1945 in Ukraine, Suprun belongs to the first generation of the Kharkiv school of photography. He started out concentrating mainly on straight documentary work but later became interested in collage. His subjects were mostly elderly people and children, who he often placed against a sinister-looking urban background with dramatic high-contrast skies.

Since 1981 Suprun has worked as a professor at the Kharkiv Art and Industry University.

A major show on Michel Haddi is underway in Milan, Italy, at 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS gallery.

On display until 22 December are exemplary images from the French-Algerian photographer’s four-decade career, with famous faces such as Liza Minnelli, David Bowie, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss Linda Evangelista and Yasmin Le Bon.

Haddi, known for his personal and unconventional style, has succeeded in capturing the spirit of an era through the celebrities who have populated the worlds of fashion, film and music.

The exhibition features refined black & white studio shots as well as more unusual photographs with a street vibe, reflecting the artist’s multifaceted personality.

In honour of Haddi’s wide-ranging body of work, a second exhibition will open early next year (16 January to 16 March 2024) featuring nudes and unpublished images. It will also include evocative colour images, many of which are linked to 90s advertising campaigns for brands such as Versace, Chanel, Armani and Yves Saint-Laurent.

A series of events will run alongside the exhibitions, including an artist talk on Thursday 16 November.

B+W 281’s Salon star Austen Goldsmith shot this superb image at the weekend, capturing the drama of Storm Babet as it battered the Cornish coast.

Austen writes in his article: ‘If someone had told me 30 years ago that I would end up living in a fishing village near Land’s End, working as a fisherman, I would have told them to check their crystal ball. And if you had told me I would ditch my DSLRs and start shooting film, spending many nights in the darkroom, I would have been somewhat surprised. And yet here I am.'

Photographs by Jo Spence (London, 1934-1992) feature in a new online exhibition hosted by Richard Saltoun Gallery. Coinciding with the UK’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 50% of profits will be donated to the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

Jo Spence was a central figure in the British art scene of the 1970s and 80s, contributing to debates around photography, feminism and the critique of representation. In the 1970s, she joined the all-female documentary photography collective the Hackney Flashers, who explored the role of the woman in the workplace and home.

Spence was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1982 and, at the age of 46, she began documenting her battle with the disease. The exhibition focuses on three renowned series that came out of this experience: ‘The Picture of Health?’, ‘Narratives of Dis-ease: Ritualised Procedures’ and ‘Phototherapy’.

This intriguing and surreal image is one of a selection of Skye landscapes by Albert Watson currently on show at Hamiltons Gallery, London.

Part of the Scottish photographer’s most personal project to date, which he began 10 years ago, the otherworldly images seek to capture Skye’s magical qualities. Watson recalls: ‘I was terrified of coming to Skye and producing picture postcards. I wanted to create landscapes that were quite mysterious. I deliberately went in October and November because I was hoping for bad weather – and of course I got it.’

Further inspiration came from Victorian romanticism, impressionist painting and the novels of JRR Tolkien. In order to obtain the kind of images he imagined, Watson needed to ‘dominate’ the landscape and slightly enhance it by using a distorted lens.

The exhibition, which runs until 17 November, consists of archival prints of jewel-coloured landscapes and four oversized black & white UV pigment prints on linen.

The English Lake District is known for its colourful landscapes, but it is also a place that lends itself brilliantly to a monochrome approach, as Mark Gilligan proves.

‘There’s a grittiness about black & white,’ explains the Lakes-based photographer ‘I’ve always felt that when you strip the colour out of what you see, you’re looking at the reality of what’s there.’

His latest set of portraits – part of a side project he started in 2022 after winning 100 rolls of Kodak Tri-X medium format film – are included in a new book. Simon discusses his work with Tracy Calder in B+W 282 – don’t miss it!

If you’re headed to Glasgow in the coming months, you can catch Simon’s photographs displayed at Street Level Photoworks (14 October to 23 December).

‘Bob talked about how the 1970s was a special time for him and when he was talking about it, he went somewhere else in his mind,’ says Simon. ‘I asked Bob to close his eyes and think about that time period, and that was the moment I hit the shutter.’
