On Saturday 8 June, the sun set on the biennial Festival of Flowers at Chichester Cathedral on the South Coast of England after a four day floral extravaganza.

More than 100 floral designers took part in this year's event creating around 60 sustainable designs using more than 50,000 stems of flowers under the helm of lead designer Hannah Howell.

Our Editor, Nina Tucknott, together with fellow designer, Jan Crouch, were there and their two large scale designs on either side of the West Door - the main entrance to the 800 year's old Cathedral - greeted thousands of visitors.

Their "Sunset Meadows" designs, shown here, measured 240cm x 120cm each and were created on insulation boards featuring layers and layers of tissue paper onto which cerise 40cm glass tubes had been fixed, and which were then filled with a medley of summery blooms including Clematis 'Blue Pirouette', Daucus carota, Ammi majus, Craspedia, Dianthus 'Lege Marrone' and Astrantia major combined with dried florals such as Lagurus, bullrushes and Scabiosa stellata.

We will soon feature more brilliant designs from this ever popular festival on our website - www.flora-magazine.com - so keep checking there!

For centuries, and nearly 50 years at its current Nine Elms location, New Covent Garden Flower Market has been supplying flowers, plants and foliage to customers across London and the South-East. And, earlier this week, it announced its support as a patron of Great Britain’s inaugural National Florist Day (NFD).

This is what Caroline Marshall-Foster, founder of NFD, had to say: "To say I am thrilled National Florist Day is happening would be an understatement! Throughout my career I have had the privilege of seeing just how wonderful the whole industry is and I know first-hand the amazing things florists do to create magical moments for every possible occasion.

It has always been my dream to find a way of celebrating the faces of floristry from throughout the industry, showcasing our whole sector to the consumer world and helping florists everywhere promote themselves on a wider scale. To see this come to life is amazing, indeed it will be one of the highlights of my career and I can’t wait to get started!”

To celebrate this event, the market will host a flower demonstration program on Saturday, 8th June 2024, from 6:15 am to 9:30 am.

The demonstrations will take place at the Green & Bloom Flowers unit within the market, featuring five renowned florists, all of whom are long-standing and cherished customers of the traders at NCGM. The line-up is as follows:

6.15 Introduction by NFD creator Caroline Marshall Foster – Purple Spotted Media
6.25 Elaine Graham – Pesh Flowers
7.00 Ahmed Salman – Paul Thomas Flowers
7.35 Warren Bushaway – London Event Florist
8.10 Alan Simpson – Hybrid Flowers
8.45 Simon Lycett – Simon J Lycett Ltd

The event will be live-streamed on instagram through the feed.

Wanda Goldwag, Chair of Covent Garden Market Authority (photo below), states, “As the UK’s leading wholesale market, selling an estimated 17.5 million flower stems each year, New Covent Garden Flower Market is an ideal partner for a day dedicated to the magical world of flowers, floristry, and floral architects. We’re thrilled to host our own event to celebrate the nation’s florists and their expertise.”

UK retail sales of flowers and plants are estimated to be worth ÂŁ2.4 billion, with independent florists contributing around 25% of this market. June 8th is dedicated to acknowledging their exceptional and inspiring work, which captivates the nation and brings beauty to our lives through their stunning floral creations.

Tommy Leighton, NCGM’s Press Officer, adds, “Each florist will create something uniquely magical from flowers and foliage sourced from the Market that morning. We will also exhibit a special creation from the budding florists at our neighbouring Wyvil School and premiere new films about the Market. We invite everyone to join us, meet the amazing florists, and kick off the inaugural National Florist Day in style.”

What a day it's going to be!

Chelsea in Bloom is London’s largest free-to-attend festival of flowers, produced by Cadogan in association with the Royal Horticultural Society.

During this much-loved annual event, the neighbourhood’s businesses compete to win one of the prestigious floral art awards.

This year’s competition saw almost 100 participants showcase impressive fresh floral displays, each reflecting their own unique interpretation of the ‘Floral Feasts’ theme.

The RHS judges, together with fashion-editor-turned-ceramicist Deborah Brett and content creator Josie London, based their decisions on originality, quality of finish and planting choice, overall effect, and interpretation of this year’s theme. It is said that the two teams covered more than 30,000 steps during their judging!

Yesterday (Friday 24 May 2024), the long-awaited results came in and The Conran Shop won the coveted Best Floral Display Award with their bench seating being surrounded by a myriad of summery blooms.

There were a total of 10 Gold, 26 Silver Gilt, 39 Silver, 18 Bronze, 7 Merit and 1 Highly Commended awards.

Sadly we cannot show you all but here is a little taster of the wonderful creativity that has delighted London visitors these past few days, including our Jules and Nina.

Each year, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show supports the future of florists by inviting a floristry college to come along and show their skills and this year, the honour fell to Moreton Morrell College, Warwickshire College Group.

Their team of Level 5 floristry students created a trio of sculptures to awaken the visitors to the variations of the growing season under the heading 'AWAKENING-DNA: rooted in nature together'.

Inspired by DNA, the students designed a passage of the seasons through three double-helix structures which they had woven from locally sourced willow in three colour-ways.

These showed the three stages of life - from Emergence (growth, uncertainty), to Abundance (joy, full bloom, actualisation) and then through to Decay (subsidence, mortal remains, inevitability).

The design featured raised grounding as if the three pillars were growing upwards from within the Great Pavilion, imitating seedlings in their emergence.

There was also a lovely touch close to their design, where they had a box filled with seed bombs which had been made by Support Learning students at the College. Visitors were invited to take one home and our Editor is now excited to see what will be coming up in her own garden in due course!

Very well done team Moreton Morrell College; a brilliantly executed design with a strong message.

Let's take a look at some more medal winners at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

SILVER GILT

SARAH HORNE ACADEMY with 'Natural Botanical Palette'

This design was a fusion of florals and sculpture where a variety of flowers were arranged through handmade wire supports within handcrafted wax bowls. Lots of colours were knitted together using Japanese 'natural harmony' methodology progressing through tints, tones, hues and shades/

ALLISON HOOD FLOWER SCHOOL with 'Nature's Spectrum'

Allison created a three-tiered structure for her British-grown flowers where small pieces of mirror were hidden within the design to figuratively reflect the past and present, light and colour. She wanted this upward-climbing design to represent the eternal circle of life.

SILVER

ELDER & WILD with 'Glazes'

Husband and wife team, Sam & Rebekah Critchlow, wanted to explore how floral composition and colour layering can echo techniques used by the Impressionists. Their deisng was a floating collection of floral 'palettes' to create a cloud-like effect.

BONNIE CHU with 'Opera Splendour: A Floral Ode'

With this floral piece Bonnie wanted to promote the enduring legacy of Chinese opera by capturing the art form's vibrant colours, intricate costumes and rich symbolic meanings. The colour red which was prominently used symbolises loyalty while the cobalt blue represents strength and bravery all helping to remind everyone of the rich cultural heritage of Chinese opera.

LAURA ROSE FLOWERS with 'The Capital of May'

Laura was inspired by the celebration of May Day in Oxford and created a design reinterpreting an ancient Corinthian column adding textural green foliage to remind us of the Green Man and the unfurling of new life. Focal flowers and bright colours are deliberately lacking with plants chosen for their strong shapes, textures and verdant versatility instead.

Such a wonderful achievement from each designer.

At RHS Chelsea Flowers Show there were two further floristry categories which were not judged; 'Creative Spaces' and 'Floral Installations'.

Here we take a look at all the entries for these. The first four were in the former category, the last two in the latter.

ACACIA CREATIVE STUDIO with 'Heartwood'

A sculptural tunnel like design by Rachel Kennedy and Wang Xue representing a fallen tree where lengths and lengths of rush and straw plaits had been woven onto a steel structure utilising off-cut and recycled steel. British flowers featured in a myriad of glorious colours.

KITTEN GRAYSON FLOWERS with 'Seed to Ceiling: As above, so below'

A floral tapestry design woven from the landscape illustrating the journey of a flower from seed to ceiling. There were reflective bowls filled with water and flower garlands which rained down from the boughs of trees, with all the seasonal flowers having been home-grown.

This design won the coveted Floristry Ambassador's Choice award too.

CARLY ROGERS FLOWERS with 'Arrangement'

Another sculptural design this time exploring the joy of playing with texture, colour, scale and composition. The installation was a larger-than-life, scaled up 'floral arrangement' reimagined and transformed into organic shapes and forms.

DAYS OF DAHLIA with 'The cracks which appear, and the things that grow from them'

Lauren Printy Currie and Louisina Currie (a mother and daughter team) grow all their own flowers in Scotland and in their design they wanted to experiment with subtlety and illusion. Botanically dyed silk drapes appeared to have flowers growing from them creating a painterly illusion effect.

LUCY VAIL FLORISTRY with Vertical Veg

A striking take on a still life where sustainable mechanics held an improbable tower of locally sourced, season flowers, fruits and vegetables. Just like the ones you might find in your kitchen garden! This exhibit formed part of the Chelsea in Bloom event whose theme this year is 'Floral Feasts'.

JUDITH BLACKLOCK with 'Floral Fun and Games in Belgravia'

In her design, Judith received support from Westminster Wheels - a charity that collects old bikes, makes them rideable and then donates them to good causes. Her bikes were covered in moss as well as fresh and dried plant material and four meters up in the sky, a willow figure depicted Judith in her heyday on a unicycle with her constant companion Katie the Dog down below wanting a ride!

Once again, such incredible talent. We salute them all.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show has been handing out awards today and we are delighted to share herewith the Gold Medal winners in the 'Floral Creations' category.

LARA THORPE with 'Spectrum of Fire'

Lara's design came to be as a result of her shock at last year's summer wildfires and the widespread devastation they caused. She had as a base a willow structure which she adorned with flowers in reds, oranges and yellows to represent the fire element, and she then placed her design on a charred timber plinth.

Lara also clinched the coveted RHS Florist of the Year 2024 title for her design which she wanted to portray hope; while the world is a fragile place and climate change is a serious threat, a big difference can be made if we each just play our small part.

ANGELA TURNER with 'Inner Peace'

Angela's design reflected her interest in supporting wellbeing through flowers - bringing calm among the chaos. Her delicate British flowers, combined with vine-like materials and grasses, created a cocoon perfectly depicting inner peace, with an exquisite composite rose at the centre.

JULIE PEARSON with 'Colour & Transparency'

Julie drew inspiration from the Pantone Neon Colour trends from 2023 to 2024 and created a bold and invigorating design. She used glass test tubes and acrylic rods to give visually pleasing transparency against her colourful botanicals.

LAURA PANNITT with 'Burst'

Laura of Helen James Flowers used a bright colour palette to give her design bursts of energy. Placing her florals in muted beige cones provided calmness amidst the floral exuberance.

NICOLA HILL with 'Peach Perfect'

Nicola of Gentle Blooms sites that her favourite colour palette is that of spring flowers and within her willow framework she celebrated pastel colours that had been grown on her flower farm using ecological, environmentally friendly methods.

Our congratulations go to all these talented designers and it goes without saying, that our President & Creative Director, Jules Lewis Gibson, and our Editor, Nina Tucknott, who attended Press Day on Monday, were blown away by the incredibly high standard.
