The October issue features an article on the infamous false widow spiders, which often appear in sensationalist tabloid headlines around this time of year. In this piece, Alastair Lavery and Lawrence Bee describe the fascinating history and biology of these spiders, tackle the truths and misconceptions around their bites and venom, and provide species accounts for the five species present in Britain, accompanied by meticulous artwork by Richard Lewington.

After 32 years of singlehandedly keeping British Wildlife readers informed on changes and issues in , Sue Everett recently stepped down from compiling our Conservation news feature. To continue her invaluable work we have assembled a new team of excellent contributors, each with their own area of expertise.

The October issue included the first of the new-look Conservation news, covering topics such as nutrient neutrality, invasive hornets and wildlife crime, with expert analysis by authors from Wildlife & Countryside Link, the University of Oxford’s Department of Biology, People Need Nature, WildFish, Rewilding Britain, the Marine Conservation Society and Wild Justice, among others. We will continue to bring in new authors to cover other important news and we welcome suggestions of any other topics that deserve regular coverage.
