Council awarded funding to help tackle the issue of chewing gum on B&NES streets

Work to tackle chewing gum littering in Bath and North East Somerset will be stepped up following a successful grant application.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has been awarded £8.5k from the Chewing Gum Task Force, administered by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, to help tackle the issue of chewing gum on the streets.

The funding will be used to buy an additional gum removal machine and for targeted gum removal in Midsomer Norton, as well as Keynsham, Bath and Twerton High Street.

Following the removal, new signs will be installed encouraging people to bin their gum and the areas will be monitored. The Chewing Gum Task Force Grant Scheme was established by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The council is one of 54 across the country that have successfully applied to the Chewing Gum Task Force, now in its third year, for funds. The Task Force is funded by major gum manufacturers including Mars Wrigley and Perfetti Van Melle, with an investment of up to £10 million spread over five years.

Monitoring and evaluation carried out by Behaviour Change – a not-for-profit social enterprise - has shown that in areas that benefitted from the first year of funding, a reduced rate of gum littering was still being observed six months after clean-up and the installation of prevention materials.

Estimates suggest the annual clean-up cost of chewing gum for councils in the UK is around £7 million and, according to Keep Britain Tidy, around 77% of England’s streets and 99% of retail sites are stained with gum.

In its second year the task force awarded 55 councils a total of £1.56 million, helping clean an estimated 440,000 m2 of pavement - an area equivalent to the Vatican City.

By combining targeted street cleaning with specially designed signage to encourage people to bin their gum, participating councils achieved reductions in gum littering of up to 60% in the first two months.
Councillor Tim Ball, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “We are grateful to Keep Britain Tidy for providing funding to help keep the streets of Bath & North East Somerset free of gum. Thoughtlessly discarded gum is unsightly and unacceptable and it’s difficult to remove. It also contributes to microplastic pollution as it slowly breaks into smaller pieces. The new signage encourages people to put their gum in the bin and help to keep our streets clean and tidy

Resurfacing work to get under way near Royal United Hospital

Planned resurfacing work will get under way next week along Combe Park, Weston, and residents, hospital staff and visitors are being advised of diversion routes in place.

The essential improvement work will start at 7pm on Monday 29th July and is expected to take up to five nights to complete, depending on the weather.

Work will be carried out under a road closure between 7pm and 7am and will be undertaken in two different phases to ensure that access to the emergency entrance at the RUH is maintained. During the second phase access to the main car park will only be possible from the Penn Hill Road entrance.

Diversion routes will be in place for local traffic and advance notices have been positioned along the route to warn drivers of the road closure.

A family nature walk, music workshop and an evening bat walk all feature in this year’s expanded Somer Valley Walking Festival, which runs from Friday September 6 to Sunday September 8.

The festival is hosted by Somer Valley Rediscovered in collaboration with the Somer Valley Ramblers and offers walkers a weekend of exploration, learning and community spirit.

On Saturday September 7 the activity walks include Forest Bathing which focuses on mindfulness and forging a deep connection with nature and Foraging led by local experts Steve England, Luke Newman, and Leah Apostolou, who provide tips on how to identify edible plants and berries.

On Sunday September 8 the Ramblers will guide a series of walks including leisurely strolls and longer hikes across fields, valleys and old railway lines allowing walkers to experience nature, heritage, and wonderful scenic views. All the walks start from the Somer Centre in Midsomer Norton.

Also on Sunday, there will be a creative well-being photography walk from The Active Way.

This year several new audio trails will be launched to encourage people to undertake self-guided walks around the area.

Councillor Sarah Warren, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency and Sustainable Travel, said: “The walking festival provides a fantastic opportunity to explore the beautiful Somer Valley area. Whether you're an avid walker or just looking for a fun and engaging weekend activity with your family, this festival has something for everyone. Participants will have the chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and rich history and biodiversity of the area, making new friends and learning from knowledgeable guides along the way.”

Shop local campaign aims to support market town businesses

A ‘Shop, Dine and Visit Local’ campaign has been launched in Midsomer Norton with backing from businesses and Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Bath & North East Somerset is launching its ‘Shop Local’ campaign to highlight the number of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and businesses in the town.

Councillor Paul Roper, Cabinet Member for Economic and Cultural Sustainable Development, said: “Every pound spent at a local cafe, hairdresser or restaurant helps to boost the local economy, support local jobs and local families, and ensures the town centre continues to thrive. We are working hard to minimise any disruption during the work to create the new Market Square and we want to encourage everyone to show support for local businesses and invest in the community by continuing to shop, dine and visit locally.”

Construction of the new public space outside the Town Hall aims to rejuvenate Midsomer Norton town centre, providing space for community events and making it possible for indoor and outdoor events to be held in the town centre.

The Market Square is part of the £3.7m Midsomer Norton High Street Regeneration Programme, which follows on from the successful High Street Heritage Action Zone.

The scheme is being carried out by Bath & North East Somerset Council, with funding and support provided by Historic England, the West of England Combined Authority through its ‘Love Our High Streets’ grant programme, and Midsomer Norton Town Council.

The work is expected to be completed by early 2025. Information about the programme of works can be viewed at yourmidsomernorton.co.uk and updates will be added as the work progresses.

Bold new ideas for future transport networks in Bath & North East Somerset have been published today and the council is inviting people to have their say.
Bath & North East Somerset Council has launched consultations on two transport strategies aimed at giving local communities a significant voice in shaping the future of travel over the next 20 years.
Creating Sustainable Communities in North East Somerset: The Journey to Net Zero outlines proposals focused on four areas: Keynsham & Saltford, the Somer Valley, Hicks Gate and Whitchurch Village.
This transport strategy looks to provide more travel opportunities to enable people to choose to walk, wheel, cycle and use public transport. It also recognises that occasionally car usage is essential and necessary, when sustainable travel is not an option. It plays a crucial role in creating better connected, healthier and more sustainable communities.
The Active Travel Masterplan is a comprehensive plan that sets out the existing and future network of active travel infrastructure. It will enable walking, cycling, and other forms of active travel, ensuring safer, healthier, and more accessible transportation options for everyone. It will support all types of journey including commuting, education, leisure and tourism.
As part of the Council’s promise to give people a bigger say, we are hosting a series of drop-in events where people can learn more about the strategies and share their views. These events will take place from 3pm to 7pm on the following dates:
18th July – The Hollies Council Chamber, Midsomer Norton, BA3 2DP

Have your say on street drinking -
Residents in Midsomer Norton are being asked for their views on renewing legal orders which address anti-social behaviour associated with the possession and consumption of alcohol in the centre of Midsomer Norton.
The Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) for Midsomer Norton would enable Bath & North East Somerset Council and Avon & Somerset police to continue to act on antisocial behaviour to keep people safe.

The PSPOs consultation launched today (July 8) asks for people’s views on continuing to prohibit people from having alcohol in their possession, care or control in any public place within the Restricted Area within Midsomer Norton Town Centre, where that person is behaving in a way likely to cause, or where an authorised officer reasonably suspects would lead to, harassment, alarm or distress, crime, or disorder in the area.

It would not be a criminal offence to consume alcohol within a restricted area. PSPOs are not intended to disrupt peaceful activities and are used explicitly to deal with anti-social behaviour in public places that are detrimental to the local community’s quality of life. It would be an offence, however, without reasonable excuse, to fail to comply with a request by an Authorised Officer to cease drinking or surrender alcohol. A person guilty of such an offence would be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £1000.

The existing PSPOs expire in September this year and the council has a statutory duty to consult on their renewal.

💥🎭GUY FAWKES & THE SOMERSET CARNIVALS🎭💥

🖤3rd September : THE BYGONE DAYS LIVING HISTORY TALKS RETURN THIS SEPTEMBER🖤 BEGINNING ON TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 3RD.

Raising funds for Somerset Coalfield Life at Radstock Museum charity no. 03094854

Tuesday September 3rd: “Guy Fawkes & The Somerset Carnivals" by Tom Randall Somer Centre, MSN. 7:30pm. £5 entry on the door (no booking required)

This fascinating presentation will take you back to Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot and how this historical event led to the illuminated Somerset carnival circuit we still enjoy every November.

Did you know? that a law was passed following the foiled plot, called the “Observance of the 5th of November Act 1605” enforcing British citizens to celebrate the “The Joyful Day of Deliverance” The law was in place for over 200 years from January 1606 until 1859 making this a custom so ingrained into society that we continue to remember and mark it to this day. It required church ministers to hold a special service of thanksgiving every 5th November, during which the text of the act was read out loud. Everyone by law, had to attend. Local bonfires became an essential part of the day’s celebrations.

Find out about the origins of the carnival queen, carnival clubs and enjoy a special emphasis on the history of Midsomer Norton Carnival with wonderful slides full of the magic of carnivals past and present. Tom Randall, local historian and Librarian at Radstock Museum has extensively researched this topic and gathered together some visual treats for this presentation. Tom is assisted by Lucy Tudor his daughter, and incidentally, Midsomer Norton Carnival Queen in 1987.

TO FOLLOW:
Tuesday October 1st: “The Trafalgar Way” by Kathy Brown.
Tuesday November 5th “Death and Service” By Richard Cooper-Knight.
All these illustrated presentations will take place at the Somer Centre in Midsomer Norton at 7:30pm until 8:30pm followed by questions and a raffle until 8:45pm. Entry is £5 cash or card on the door, no booking required. Details can be found at www.radstockmuseum.co.uk on the “what’s on” page.
