Richard Thompson’s longevity as an artist is remarkable, his originality as a songwriter matched only by his technical accomplishment as a guitarist, electric and acoustic. In Flying Solo Adrian Smith recounts the origins and recording of Thompson’s debut album, Henry The Human Fly, poorly received in 1972 but later acclaimed for its originality and musicianship. Smith sees the record as a statement of intent and a template for Thompson’s enduring career as a solo performer. Thus, Henry The Human Fly has a unique contemporaneity and a continuing relevance to English and Scottish folk music fifty years on from its inception.

Soon to be published:

How has England changed in the 70 years between the coronations of the late queen and the current king? In Coronation Streets, England then and now, British citizens of a certain age look back on their childhoods in 1953 when a glittering ritual in distant Westminster offered a brief break from the day-to-day drudgery of the post-war world.

Meat was still rationed. Bomb sites were common sights. Televisions were not. Those who could afford to buy them found their front rooms crammed with neighbours peering at nine-inch screens showing a colourful crown and a golden coach in various shades of grey. The parties that followed were often disrupted by rain and staged in streets lined with houses lacking amenities taken for granted in 2023. For all the greyness of the early ‘50s, however, there are some colourful memories here from all over England.

This is the fourteenth book by Chris Arnot, a former national freelance journalist. Small Island by Little Train was published by the AA and shortlisted for the “outstanding travel-themed writing” awards. And Britain’s Lost Cricket Festivals was shortlisted for the Cricket Book of the Year awards.

It was one of four of the Britain’s Lost series that he wrote for Aurum. Britain’s Lost Mines was heralded as “a gorgeous tribute to a whole world which has vanished” by Lee Hall, writer of Billy Elliot. And Britain’s Cricket Grounds was heralded as “the best sports book of 2011” by Jim Holden in the Sunday Express.

THE THIRD IN THE TRILOGY

Matt and Robin conclude their brilliant trilogy with Poetic Symbiosis III. Another great piece of writing that will help others understand and deal with the difficult issues of addiction and mental health.

This last volume is divided into two parts: 'Curtain Call', presenting their last set of poems and 'RATS (a Rational Approach to Therapeutic Support)' in which the authors present a frank discussion of the common support measures and how to get the best from them.

This is another great contribution to this field. The poetry and the discussion shows that the authors really know their stuff and can present their messages in such a meaningful, heartfelt, positive, and constructive way.

Well done, the two of you. It has been a privilege to work with you in producing these volumes!

This currently appears on Amazon but you'll have to wait until early March when they'll have some in stock. I'll keep you up to date.

More stories from old-school newspaper hacks! This is an entertaining and informative account of Paul Dale's life working for regional newspapers. It starts with his background at the Reading Chronicle and Berkshire Mercury and traces his experiences through to becoming Political Editor for the Coventry Evening Telegraph. A good story with some interesting revelations .....

Read about the famous players who made Coventry Rugby such a great name .....

It is hugely appropriate that this tribute to one of the City of Coventry’s proudest symbols should touchdown between our year as UK City of Culture and the club’s 150th anniversary year.
It is much more than the story of a great rugby club.

It is a rich journey into the spirit of the game of rugby, the great characters who wore the blue and white hoops, the passion of its supporters, love for this club and this city, told with an easy style and the good humour that has characterised both of them through their long histories of triumph and disaster.

The second volume of Poetic Symbiosis will be released on March 1st and you should be able to pre-order on Amazon in the next few days.

The authors have come up with another hard-hitting book that lays open the vulnerability, despair, and sheer hell that sufferers undergo. But the real message that comes through is hope and that there is a way out.

Powerful and moving stuff. We could all benefit from reading this.

The authors of Poetic Symbiosis have written a second volume of poems on the theme of living with addiction and mental illness. The first book was well received and acknowledged to be a welcome support to those in recovery and the people around them.

They have produced this volume in record time despite the prevailing pandemic and its adverse effect on the general positivity that many of us experience. This is a testimony to their determination towards their own recovery while providing an inspiration to us all.

Once again, the authors have employed their talents to convey the hopes and means of recovery for those suffering from mental health and addiction problems. It is not an easy road but, through their well-constructed poems, they show that it can be done. They don't pull any punches but they do offer hope.

This second volume retains the readable and engaging style of the first. It is informative and entertaining, despite the dark nature of its background. Once again, the authors show that there is hope in recovery and a better life to be discovered.

This book is not just for those afflicted with these problems but it gives an insight to those who have never suffered. Take a look from a different perspective - you could learn a lot!
