Looking back on this year’s releases and this has to be one of the highlights - the second volume in our Borga Revolution! series, focussing on the evolution of Ghanaian dance music in the 80’s and early 90’s, with a special love for burger highlife. ❤️⁣

Working with so many hugely talented artists, producers and family members over the past 5 years or more on this series has been an eye-opening and humbling experience, and I hope that this second volume helped to tell the story just a little bit more and share the stories of these artists just a little wider.⁣

A lot of you have been asking for this since our initial release went out of stock many years ago! We're happy to say it's finally here!

Kalita are proud to make available once again the holy grail of disco 12” singles, Vance and Suzzanne’s ‘I Can’t Get Along Without You’. A record that deserves its space on the shelf of every collector, DJ and dance music connoisseur, and with original copies now regularly fetching triple figures, it’s time to share this masterpiece with the world once more. In addition, here Kalita accompany the release with a never-before-seen press photo and interview-based liner notes.

Vance & Suzzanne consisted of Richard and his childhood friend and fellow band member Suzzanne Slaughter, who was a background singer for many bands in New York including Sister Sledge. The result of a late night writing session between Richard and Eleton and recorded to tape the following day, the record was finished in just twenty-four hours. Yet it’s legacy lives on as one of the most sought-after disco singles in existence.

Two thousand copies of ‘I Can’t Get Along Without You’ were originally pressed to test the market, with the initial plan being to re-record it again at a later date with additional strings. However, the record received such great acclaim by DJs such as Larry Levan that the idea of a re-recording was put on ice.

A recipient of the Grand Medal of Ghana for his contribution to Ghanaian music, Papa Yankson was a key member of C.K. Mann’s Carousel Seven outfit during the 1970s, releasing joint albums together on the infamous Essiebons label to great success.

However, it was at the end of the following decade that Papa released ‘Party Time’, highlighting his forward-thinking musical style with its numerous hypnotic and driving up-tempo disco-soaked highlife cuts. Originally released in a small run on the short-lived Marriot Promotion label, the album features the standouts ‘Wonma Yenko Po’ and ‘Mumumde’, each showcasing deep highlife melodies, heavy drum patterns and phenomenal horn performances from the ingenious Sammy Lartey Jr on saxophone and Nana Asare on trumpet to boot.

Last Friday was sadly a bittersweet moment. I was so happy to announce the upcoming release of Emerson's 12" single 'Sending All My Love Out', but I had also just learned that same week of Leora Sandidge's unfortunate passing earlier this summer.

Leora and Emerson were a true power couple and Emerson's album 'If You Need Me, Call Me' was a product of that loving partnership. In fact, it was on Leora's own label, LAS Records, that 'Sending All My Love Out' received its original release in 1988.

Whenever we were on a phone call, "Hello partner" was the first thing I'd hear. Leora was always so welcoming, so enthused and so appreciative of all the love that Emerson's music had received from fans worldwide.

We therefore dedicate the upcoming release to Leora.

May she rest in eternal peace.

I'll miss you, partner.

Kofi Ayivor – Adzagli: Jungle Funk

This is something truly special. These are the original master tapes for Kofi Ayivor's album 'Kofi', released in 1981 on CBS Nigeria. Master tapes of music recorded in Nigeria just do not exist anymore. They've been lost, thrown away or simply recorded over due to the expense of recording to tape.

According to legend, when the EMI Nigeria studio was sold all the tapes were thrown on the scrapheap!

Well, we're glad to say that we were able to use these original master tapes on our Kofi Ayivor 'Adzagli (Jungle Funk)' re-release, which is out now in all good record stores. This allowed Mendel to create such a fantastic and creative remix of both recordings, teasing out the groove for optimum dancefloor action!

It feels like an age since I first met Kofi Ayivor at his home in Amsterdam. I had been looking to work with him for a long time beforehand, instantly captivated by his sought-after 1981 Afro disco album 'Kofi', which includes the two phenomenal recordings that we've included on the recent Kalita reissue. The record just couldn't be found anywhere, yet the music was fantastic.

Kofi went on to captivate during our meet, sharing his stories of getting lost travelling through the Arabian deserts as he and his bandmates drove from Italy to Baghdad, as well as recalling anecdotes about playing with Miles Davis and his time as drummer for Afro rock supergroup Osibisa.

Amazingly, he also introduced me to another musician I had been searching for for what had seemed like an eternity - Joe Appiah of Uncle Joe's Afri-Beat, who we featured on Volume 1 of the Borga Revolution! series! Kofi knew that he lived in Amsterdam somewhere, and had somehow managed to track Joe down in time for our meet.

I first met up with Kofi Ayivor in Swiss Cottage, north London, in June 2018. Kofi was kind enough to entertain the idea of re-releasing the two tracks that we thought could work today ('Adzagli (Jungle Funk)' and 'A Song For You (Ayawa)') from the start, and after a great chat about his career highlights - a member of Osibisa, producer of Hi-Tension, having played with Miles Davis etc - we agreed to work together.

Fast forward FIVE(!) years, having located and transferred the original multitrack session tapes (thanks to Athens of the North's Euan Fryer and Peter Beckmann at Technologyworks Mastering), received two phenomenal remixes from Mendel, and finalised the artwork and liner notes, here we are!

Mendel: "For me it’s very special when I get to work with the multitracks (separate recordings of the instruments) from music that has been recorded 40 years ago. It feels a bit like time traveling in a way. I approach it more as a mixer (people like Walter Gibbons, Tee Scott, Shep Pettibone being my examples) to create a ‘club version’, rather than completely remixing the tracks. I try to keep the spirit/style of the original, while at the same time emphasising certain dancefloor elements. In this case some of the original tracks were missing, which was a pity but also a nice challenge, quite the puzzle.⁣⁣

These were actually the first mixes I did for Kalita already four years ago. Later I worked on the Jeanette N’Diaye edit and Wilson Boateng mixes, which came out first.⁣⁣

"Addmoro were a lesser known Los Angeles-based disco outfit active throughout the late 70s and early 80s, and their sound was unique for its ahead-of-its-time weight and phonk, not to mention a difficult-to-match versatility, both traits evidenced by this Kalita reissue of the obscurity 'Rock & Roll Skate' here, first released on their very own Addmoro Records.

The titular A-sider and 'Keep On Tryin' were released originally in 1985, with the former coming as a ploddy but groovy hard-hitter - which could've easily predicted the reams of modern-day producers who would the style on for size decades later (but not quite achieve it so well) - and the latter a surprise-taking curveball in a stumbly-funky, disco-electro mood."

Kalita are excited to announce the first ever re-release of ‘Adzagli (Jungle Funk)’ and ‘A Song For You (Ayawa)’, two phenomenal pieces of West African disco from Amsterdam’s Kofi Ayivor. Selected from his sought-after Nigerian 1981 self-titled debut album ‘Kofi’, at last these two recordings see the light of day once more via a loud-cut remastered 12” single. In addition, Kalita enlists fellow Amsterdam resident, DJ and producer Mendel to create his own remix of each recording, using the original multitrack session tapes to rework both for the modern-day dancefloor.

After having experienced life travelling with E.T. Mensah, as a percussionist for Afro rock supergroup Osibisa, and then as producer for Brit funk band Hi-Tension, in 1980 Kofi decided it was time to release his own solo album. With his own release, he could showcase his skills as a master drummer, combining these with the prevailing disco sound that had by this time taken over Western and West African airwaves.

Kofi was joined on both recordings by various musical superstars of the time, including Osibisa members Kiki Gyan and Jake Sollo, Eddy Grant on guitar and Theadora Ifudu on improvised backing vocals. Unfortunately, without a touring sponsor and much label support the record soon faded into obscurity, and the record was lost.

Now, forty years later and with original copies highly sought-after and selling for triple figures on the second-hand market, Kalita unearth this masterpiece once more, accompanied by two remixes courtesy of Mendel.

With original copies of the album out of reach for all but a select few since its initial release over thirty-five years ago, this is a much overdue retrospective of the group’s musical output. 🔥🔥⁣

Originally privately released on the group’s eponymous label Addmoro Records, Kalita’s 12” reissue single features both the vocal and instrumental versions of ‘Keep On Tryin’’, plus the saxophone-featuring boogie monster ‘Rock & Roll Skate (Sax Version)’, arguably one of the heaviest boogie recordings of the genre. 🚨🚨⁣
