Well done to AMP Hire; thanks Lee!
For those who don’t know, Amp Hire Ltd are the islands largest supplier of portable toilets, showers, luxury event toilets and temporary fencing to the construction industry, outdoor & leisure markets. They are a key contractor to the Isle of Wight Festival 🎸
AMP also sell construction machinery.

And that’s the new swings in Northwood Park playground ready to go! Northwood House Charitable Trust’s C.O.O Darren Cool (right) thanks Mr Lee Priddle, owner of AMP Hire Ltd for his major financial contribution towards the project, following many smaller donations from local residents and contribution of time and materials from other supportive local businesses.

A huge thank you from all of us at the Charity to everyone who contributed and made it all possible.

We hope local families with children will enjoy returning to the playground again this spring to play!

You’ve seen Scaramouche Sailing Trust in Cowes Yacht Haven. Now you can watch a 25 min BBC programme about them.

This is from their website:

The Scaramouche Sailing Trust
Sailing hasn’t always been a sport for inner-city state schools like the Greig City Academy (GCA). But they’ve shown it can be accessible to everyone, with amazing results

The Greig City Sailing Academy Sailing Programme was kick started in 2014. Jon Holt, GCA’s Head of Outdoor Education, was driving students down from North London to Poole for sailing weekends. They loved getting out on the water and some of them wanted to take it further.

There wasn’t an obvious route to follow. And they couldn’t believe it when they couldn’t join one of the few schools regattas around because GCA isn’t a fee paying school.

So, they did it our own way. They bought an old 22ft yacht on ebay, rotting in a field. And spent the summer sanding her down and getting her seaworthy.

By June 2015, students were getting a feel for sailing her unaccompanied. And they formed the ambition to be the first state school to complete the Fastnet.

Their next purchase was a step up: Scaramouche, a 45ft Admirals Cup yacht built in 1981. They bought her for a song and rolled up their sleeves to get to work again.

And they spent just as much time training up Scaramouche’s crew of GCA school students. Summer and winter, they made sure they were getting the sea miles and learning how to race and stay safe.

By now, the sailing world had started to notice what they were doing. They are incredibly grateful for support from Lawrie Smith, Tracy Edwards, David Franks and many more including financial support and goods in kind. Though their budget was a shoestring they did everything they could to reduce costs with no compromise on safety.

In 2016, they finished 14th in their class in the Round the Island Race. The following year they placed well in the RORC qualifying races around the Channel. By now they had a wider sailing programme running. Just two weeks before the 2017 Fastnet, they fitted in the Etchells Gertrude Cup.

And then on August 6th 2017 they dream came true as we steered Scaramouche over the Fastnet start line. Five days later, they became the first comprehensive state school crew to finish it, placed 144 out of 362 starters.

Since then, they’ve gone from strength to strength. One of their sailors, Montel Fagan-Jordan, won the YJA Young Sailor of the Year Award. They completed back-to-back Fastnets in 2019. They’ve got students sailing at all levels, from dinghies in the local reservoir to national level 420s, Squibs, Dragons, training yachts as well as offshore.

They’ve shown what’s possible. With much more hard work and dedication than money, the whole world of sailing has opened up for them. And with it, everything that brings in terms of opportunity and aspiration. Some have even gone on to careers in the marine industry.

None of this would have been possible without the continual support of Paul Sutton, Headteacher of Greig City Academy. And of course, the extraordinary dedication of our founder, Jon Holt.

Finally, the GCA students themselves have made it all happen. They’ve stepped up and made the most of these opportunities, training long hours in all conditions around their school work.

In 2019 The Scaramouche Sailing Trust was founded to support the Greig City Academy Sailing Programme and we couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve achieved.

How one inner city London school is breaking down barriers in sailing.

Wight Shipyard is most commonly known for boasting the enormous Union Jack, proudly painted across the hangar doors but equally for providing many islanders with great work opportunities over the decades. Did you also know about the invaluable role that the Wight Shipyard played throughout history?…👀

Built in 1935 by Saunders Roe, the Columbine Works was constructed to build amphibious aircraft, and was invaluable when called upon by the RAF to help construct the likes of Sea Otter, Walrus and Lerwick for the war effort. Not long after, the world’s largest metal seaplane was built at the facility to provide luxury, transatlantic travel from Southampton to New York. But, being such a large aircraft, it couldn’t fit within the buildings 50,000 sq. ft footprint and subsequently, had to be completed outside. Known as ‘The Princess’, it proudly left the Solent in August 1952.

With the Columbine Works being known for constructing vital forms of transport with unique features, it seemed only right that the first ever hovercraft was built here in 1957. Known as the SR.N1, it took to the water in the summer of 1959. Even today, the hovercraft continues to be an invaluable mode of transportation for people, across the globe.

In addition to the construction of amphibious planes and hovercraft, the Columbine Works was also home to the Saunders Roe SR.53, an interceptor aircraft with a mixed-jet and rocket propulsion system. Revolutionary at the time, the aircraft, using its rocket propulsion, would rapidly climb and approach incoming hostile bombers at high speed and then following its attack run, would return to base on jet propulsion. Another highly innovative project was the ‘Black Knight’ and ‘Black Arrow’ space launchers. Both constructed at the Columbine Works and test fired at the Needles, with the Black Arrow being the first and only all-British space launch. Amazingly the ‘Prospero’ satellite that it launched, still orbits the Earth today!

Our Union Jack is the world’s largest and was originally painted on our doors in 1977 in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee. Never intended to permanently remain, the painting has remained up ever since, only to be refreshed in 2012, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics.

Whilst we are experiencing a period of sustained growth and development and are very much looking to the future, we are equally mindful of reflecting on and honouring the lengthy and pivotal history of the site we occupy. Our aim at Wight Shipyard is to continue that tradition of pioneering innovation of the island, far into the future!

Some think climate change won’t affect them in their lifetime, that it’s only an issue for future generations.
The Atlantic currents could be facing a tipping point which could happen between 2025 and 2095
Sea levels in the Atlantic would rise by a metre in some locations, especially the eastern seaboard in the US.
The wet and dry seasons in the Amazon would flip. The southern hemisphere would become warmer. Europe would cool dramatically and have less rainfall. The changes are irreversible on human timescales.

Collapse in system of currents that helps regulate global climate would be at such speed that adaptation would be impossible

IWATA, January 19, 2024 - Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (Tokyo: 7272) announced today that it has recently concluded a stock purchase agreement with Germany’s DEUTZ AG, which owns marine electric propulsion manufacturer Torqeedo GmbH, to acquire all of Torqeedo’s shares. This stock acquisition is premised on the acquisition of the clearances, permits, etc., required by competition laws and other regulations.

Torqeedo, a pioneer in the field of electric marine propulsion, offers a wide-ranging lineup of products, from electric outboard and inboard motors to batteries and various other accessories. With sales in the small electric motor market on the rise, mainly in Europe, Torqeedo continues to grow as a company. It also holds many patents related to electric motors, propellers, and electric systems, as well as the R&D capabilities, mass-production equipment, and development resources for next-generation environmental technologies.

Yamaha Motor’s aim in acquiring Torqeedo is to strengthen the Company’s development capabilities in the Electric field of its Marine CASE Strategy, which outlines the general direction for the Marine Products business in the current Medium-Term Management Plan. This acquisition is also meant to accelerate the Company’s efforts for achieving carbon neutrality in the marine industry as well as aid in fast-tracking the establishment of a small electric propulsion lineup. Furthermore, by combining Torqeedo’s assets with Yamaha Motor’s decades of technical expertise and know-how in hull design, marine engines, and more will birth synergies for creating mid-range electric outboard motors as the Company aims to become a leader in the growing market for electric boat propulsion.
