The knitted fabric is decorated with three different black and white slip stitch patterns, using a cool linen-cotton yarn from DMC.

Here at The Knitter, we love to support our local yarn stores, and we’re always delighted when new shops appear on our high streets. This month, we’ve been chatting with Greg and Mark, who took on a craft shop business last year and have moved it to splendid new premises in the heart of Hebden Bridge.
Their shop, Craft and Canvas, now offers a much-expanded range of gorgeous yarns, including local offerings from Baa Ram Ewe, West Yorkshire Spinners and By Laxtons, as well as Urth, Opal, and For The Love of Yarn.
We take a peek inside the spectacular Victorian building housing Craft and Canvas, and discover how Greg and Mark made their long-held dreams of being yarn shop owners become reality. Read our interview in Issue 204.

This fabulous design from Jaime Dorfman is called ‘Attention Deficit Jumper’, and we’ll let Jaime herself explain the story behind her design:

“As someone with ADHD, keeping my hands occupied is essential to staying focused. Knitting has been my saving grace in this department since before I was even diagnosed. However, monotony often creeps in, especially when working on larger projects with repetitive stitch patterns, which can lead to boredom, lack of motivation and an ever-growing pile of unfinished projects. This is why I’m thrilled to bring you the Attention Deficit Jumper, a captivating knit that promises to keep your hands busy and your mind engaged from start to finish.
“With five main stitch patterns used throughout, monotony becomes a thing of the past, as each section introduces a new and exciting adventure, ensuring that you’ll always have something fresh and intriguing to work on. Not only will you stay engaged, but you’ll also hopefully learn some new techniques and expand your knitting repertoire along the way. With a slouchy, oversized, semi-cropped fit, this jumper can be dressed up or down and is suitable for both a fun night out or a cozy night in.”

The sweater appears in Jaime’s new book, ‘Fast and Fabulous Knits’ (Page Street Publishing, $25.99), and we’re delighted to be able to reprint the pattern in Issue 204 of The Knitter.

“The bold and colourful stitch pattern on this cushion cover was inspired by geometric diamond patterns often seen in traditional ikat weaving, a technique known in several regions in Asia, Africa and Latin America,” explains Outi Kater. Her design, ‘Taika’, is knitted in the round using the beautifully soft Cascade 220 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, which has a huge range of colours to suit any interior. Pairing a self-striping yarn with a slip stitch pattern is a nifty way to produce intriguing colourwork effects. Bronagh Miskelly has used this technique for her new design, ‘Greenfinch’ – it’s a yoked, short-sleeved jumper which pairs solid and self-striping colourways of West Yorkshire Spinners’s Signature 4ply sock yarn.
The jumper has a touch of waist shaping, and short-row shaping at the back neck, to give a better fit. Find Bronagh’s pattern in Issue 204.

Hands up who loves the Moomins? We’ve been fans of the characters created by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson since we were children, which is why we were so excited to see the new collection of Moomin-themed sock patterns edited by Linda Permanto.
Among the charming colourwork designs is this pair featuring the character of The Groke. They’ve been designed by by Sisko Sälpäkivi for larger feet, and will be lovely and warm inside a pair of boots as they’re knitted in a DK-weight yarn. The leg is worked using the intarsia technique, and the foot is worked in Fair Isle. Small details are embroidered on to the finished sock.

The pattern is featured in Linda Permanto’s book, ‘Knitted Moomin Socks’ (Search Press, £15.99), which contains 29 original sock designs with charts. We’re delighted to be able to feature this project in Issue 204, so you can cast on and take a trip to Moominvalley!

Fancy a summer sock challenge? This gorgeous design from Faye Perriam-Reed is guaranteed to keep you entertained while you knit!
Faye’s socks combine four delicate lace and cable patterns, and she has designed them so that all the cables can be knitted without a cable needle – a fascinating and rewarding way to create travelling stitches, if you haven’t tried it before.
Faye’s pattern, ‘Hayle’, is also a lovely way to use up a special skein of yarn, and her sample here has been knitted in a sophisticated, hand-dyed colourway from Birdstreet Yarn.

Do you own a piece of knitting that was made on the island of Fair Isle? Have you visited Fair Isle in the past, and have photographs of people knitting or knitwear being worn or displayed for sale? Then Rachel Challoner wants to hear from you!

Rachel has set up The Fair Isle Project, an exciting initiative to create a visual archive of knitted pieces that have been produced by islanders over the years. “I’m not asking people to part with their items, but I would love for them to send me photographs and any information they may have about who knitted it, when it was bought, or how they came to own it,” Rachel says.

We bring you the full story of The Fair Isle Project in Issue 203 – and Rachel also shares her personal experiences of what life as a crofter on Fair Isle is really like!
