A History of Journalism & Citizen Journalism
How the Bylines Network leads a new era of journalism: Citizen Journalism
Mike Galsworthy, co-founder and co-director of the Bylines Network, will take us through the history of journalism, from public government notices, to the first gazettes, the emergence of a 'free press', and the rapid accumulation of political power in media barons.
Then, with a free internet, the emergence of citizen journalism in the provision and storytelling of key news by citizens without cost barriers. This is now getting crystalised into a more broadly inclusive and regulated form by the Bylines Network, keen to define and shape a new era of public-good journalism.

What climate action should the next government prioritise?
Climate action will be high up on the next government’s agenda. The environment frequently features among voters’ top priorities, and both the Conservatives and Labour are already making sizeable climate pledges.
But tackling a problem the size of climate change is a considerable endeavour. A range of solutions will be needed to decarbonise the country, and the next government will have limited political capital. Breaking down what they should prioritise will be an important stage of the political debate.
This event, a Bylines Network Debate for Progress, will present a few options of what the next government should prioritise to tackle the climate emergency. The following speakers will make the below cases of which policies would be best placed to do so:
â—Ź Carla Denyer, Co-leader of the Green Party of England and Wales
â—Ź Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, and the party's spokesperson for Energy & Climate Change and Transport
â—Ź Ryan Jude, Programme Director at the Green Finance Institute, Labour Party Councillor for Lancaster Gate, and Deputy Cabinet Member - Climate Action and Biodiversity, at Westminster City Council
â—Ź Leo Murray, Co-founder and Director of Innovation and Engagement at Possible
The event will be chaired by Louise Houghton, Director of the Bylines Network.

How do we get better MPs
Nearly everyone agrees that our MPs are not up to scratch. Two-thirds of people believe that politicians are “merely out for themselves” and trust in politics is lower in the UK than in most OECD countries.
Recent scandals over second jobs, lobbying, and sexual misconduct have only damaged the reputation of MPs, with little sign of improvement in sight.
The path to improving the quality of our legislators is unclear. Some point to changing the conditions inside Westminster itself, while others look to the conditions of becoming an MP, and who chooses to apply for the job.
This event, the first of the Bylines Network’s Debates for Progress, will present a few options of how to improve the quality of our legislators. Speaking at the event will be:
â—Ź Tom Brake, Director of Unlock Democracy
â—Ź Tina Bhartwas, Labour Councillor for Letchworth North
â—Ź Josiah Mortimer, Chief Reporter at Byline Times
â—Ź Harpreet Uppal, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Huddersfield
The event will be chaired by Louise Houghton, Director of the Bylines Network.

Social media: digital democracy or cash for clicks?
Once social media was seen as a great leveller: a place for people of all walks of life to discuss ideas, and where anyone could go viral. Increasingly, however, the free internet is becoming less so. Big brands are able to pay for influence, and political parties can weaponise data for engagement.
On 18 May, our panel of experts from politics and business look at how democratic our social media landscape is, and how to use it to achieve change. Our panellists for this event are:
Mo Kanjilal (chair)
Mo has worked in business for many years, climbing the corporate career ladder, leading teams selling technology and software. She writes blogs about, diversity, inclusion and belonging. She is a co-creator of Watch This Sp_ce, a consultancy to help workplaces reimagine work to include everyone. She is writing a business book and a novel and is one of the Sussex Bylines team.
Hugh Goulbourne
Hugh Goulbourne is a senior commercial lawyer based in Huddersfield. He is chair of the Kirklees Diversity = Innovation Network, a business advocate for Huddersfield Unlimited and a Yorkshire Bylines author.
Hugh believes that, with the right investment, the mill towns of Kirklees and its surrounding areas have the right mix of culture, community enterprise and knowledge to become hotbeds of 21st century industrial innovation. This is the platform on which he recently campaigned to be Labour’s candidate for West Yorkshire mayor.
Paul Mortimer
Paul Mortimer is a former professional footballer, having played with Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Since leaving football, he has been active in "Show Racism the Red Card", a campaign to tackle racism in the sport. He also works as a consultant and speaker.
Sasha Langeveldt
An environmentalist, humanitarian and activist, Sasha was the first black woman to be elected as Students' Union president 2019/2020 of Kent Union. She graduated from Kent in 2018 with a philosophy BA and works to better the world we live in.
