New Release

Damages (2025), the first track from jonnythefirth’s upcoming fourth album Broken Bones vol 2 is out today.

Jonny: “It’s a song about mental health issues around bi polar and the ups and downs that can bring and trying to navigate that in a strange world It’s also about not knowing my heritage from my biological father’s side. It’s saying look at all the love that you missed out on through the years, even though I was lucky with the love I had from my mums side.

I re-recorded a version of it for the 10th anniversary of broken bones album in 2022 but it never came to fruition. As fate should have it now it’s going to be release as a single for a su***de charity called Papyrus.

Papyrus is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of su***de and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in young people. They exist to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding su***de and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress. They believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of su***de.

I’ve lost family member and friends to su***de and it’s something, I too feel, we need to highlight especially in these hard times. We need to support family and friends, we are all fighting an invisible battle and we never truly know whet people are going through.”

There will be a run of gigs with all proceeds will go to Papyrus. More details on those to come later this month.

It’s been amazing how much many of you have helped to clear Philophobia’s debt and stock.

5 years ago I was sitting with £8,000 credit card debt, surrounded by boxes of recorded after having had to relinquish the PHOP office.

Today, while there’s still a few too many boxes at home for comfort, the debt is only £125.

Thanks everyone.

It would obviously be really great to clear that as well.

To try to do so, I want to highlight the titles that are down to their last few copies (I’ve mentioned the ones where there are lots of copies mainly over the past year).

2 CD copies of The Ainsley Band’s Devil in the Detail
3 cassette copies of Baker Island How Does Half Help By Doing Nowt
2 CD copies of Clandestines Saturday As Usual
1 CD copy of Climbing Alice Melt Yourself Up
2 CD copies of The Ship-Tones Indie Reggae Revolution

All available at https:// philophobiamusic.bandcamp.com/merch

Thanks

New Music And New Artist

Delighted to welcome jonnythefirth to the Philophobia family. Jonny Firth is of course no stranger to you as part of Knuckle, but despite a long history between us we’ve never worked together on his solo material as I left Louder Than Bombs as his debut EP was in the early planning stages and timings never quite worked out for his subsequent albums. Until now that is.

Broken Bones 2 will released early next year with a new version of Damages featuring Rosie Doonan will be released in a few weeks time.

In the meantime Jonny’s three albums are now available on our Bandcamp page and will be available on all DSPs as soon as the industry wakes up after Christmas.

Listen now at https://philophobiamusic.bandcamp.com

I got chance to go out Christmas shopping this morning. Had a doughnut to celebrate surviving it.

Anyway that’s just a way into reminding you about the wealth of excellent Christmas songs that are available on our Bandcamp page.

Most available for free but any shiny pennies gladly accepted if you think we’ve been good this year.

With news that the Long Division book has sold out, along with most of their other merch, it seems a good time to remind you that we still have copies of 2 of our Long Division releases left.

Vinyl copies of the live albums by The Ainsley Band and Piskie Sits are available on a Pay What You Want basis from our Bandcamp page. Link in comments.

NEW RELEASE

Leeds indie pop old timers Buen Chico have taken a few years out since their last release to raise some children, but, after dipping their collective toe with a few gigs over the past 12 months, they are now sharing their first new recorded output in 5 years.

With more strut and swagger than Buen Chico fans are usually accustomed to, ‘Pioneers’ takes aim at jumped up billionaire wannabe-visionary dweebs such as Elon Musk. The familiar rhythm section of Morgan Tatchell-Evans (vocals, guitar, keys) and brothers Alan and John Kenworthy (drums and bass, respectively) is bolstered here by sparkling guitars from Matthew Haigh (of Wot Gorilla?, who sat out Buen Chico’s 2019 Crooks EP) and backing vocals from Haigh and new member Emily Ingham (also of Mi Mye). The band are clearly enjoying having more to play with.

Lyrically, the new cut picks up regular Buen Chico themes of climate change and environmental degradation, tracing a line between European colonialism, the industrial revolution, modern digital tech and AI, drawing on the enduring wisdom of Audre Lorde along the way.

The song precedes a new album, due in 2025, which Morgan has been telling anyone who will listen represents the best set of songs the band have yet assembled, with a focus on irresistible choruses.

Pioneers is available across digital platforms now https://song.link/i/1778436228

You can also download from our bandcamp https://philophobiamusic.bandcamp.com/album/pioneers If everyone who follows this page did so, we might be able to afford to put the album out on vinyl.
