April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, a fantastic annual opportunity to raise awareness of bowel cancer and funds to support research into treatment and prevention.

The earlier bowel cancer is spotted, the more treatable it's likely to be.

In fact, more than 9 in 10 people survive bowel cancer when it is diagnosed at the earliest stage.

To learn more about the healing power of exercise after a bowel cancer diagnosis, head to the link below to read Sarah Russell's 'Bowel Cancer Recovery Toolkit'.

Sarah Russell aims to fill the gap in the patient pathway where there is little knowledge about rehabilitation and the benefits of exercise after abdominal surgery. Her research, based on a survey of 2,700 patients, showed that people become less active and lose confidence after a cancer diagnosis, but being more active can in fact have disproportionately positive effects, with the power to rebuild confidence and self-esteem when most needed.

Tuesday 2nd April marked International Children's Book Day!

It got us reminiscing on the books we used to love as children.

We asked some of our authors about the books they loved best when growing up, or that got them reading, and their responses were fascinating!

Frances Ive, author of One Step Ahead of Osteoarthritis, says: ‘I am going to say: Alice in Wonderland, which I loved so much that it got my imagination going. I think Peter Pan and all Enid Blyton books (especially The Famous Five) did the same.'

Raymond Perrin, author of The Perrin Technique, says: ‘My favourite 2 books as a child were All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot and My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. I loved animals and wanted to be a vet or own a zoo, so definitely recommend these two if any child has the same dreams.'

Julie Sullivan, author of The Gallstone-friendly Diet, says: ‘Two books are responsible for my early love of reading – Watership Down by Richard Adams, and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis.’

Book Highlight: "A User’s Manual for the Human Body"

February often brings colds and flu, but understanding how to support your body's natural healing processes can make all the difference. "A User’s Manual for the Human Body" by Alex Wu, offers a transformative guide to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the modern age.

In this ground-breaking book, Wu bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary science, offering a fresh perspective on health and wellness. Drawing on his background as a former computer engineer, he simplifies complex TCM principles by likening the body to a well-oiled machine.

Unlike traditional texts, Wu's approach is accessible and relevant to today's readers, emphasising the body's innate ability to heal itself. By nurturing this self-healing system, we can achieve longer, healthier lives free from the shackles of symptom-suppressing treatments.

Through simple examples like gout, psoriasis, and the common cold, Wu illustrates how TCM and Western medicine diverge, showcasing the power of promoting body energy and self-healing.

Mike McInnes, author of Honey Sapiens has written a blog on the underlying problems of energy drinks.

"The latest research on the toxicity of caffeinated energy drinks in youth, highlighted by Kate Pickles in the Daily Mail, and focusing on sleep impairment, is most welcome. However, it does not uncover the full neuropathological damage to these young brains. Shocking though this is to acknowledge, these drinks are degrading human cognition at breakneck speed."
