December 19th is a reminder of a tragic loss in Mousehole in 1981. The Solomon Browne Penlee Lifeboat went to the aid of The Union Star, a stricken coaster on her maiden voyage from Holland to Ireland. Her engines failed 8 miles East of Wolf Rock and she was being swept towards the rocks. A dozen selfless Mousehole men answered the call for lifeboat crew, but only eight were needed. The rescue was such high risk that Coxswain Trevelyan Richards would only take one man from each family.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The 14 metre Watson class wooden lifeboat launched into the hurricane force 12 gale, and fought 90-knot winds and 18m waves to reach the Union Star but sadly all hands were lost from both ships. 16 lives in total, and 8 Mousehole lifeboatmen, an unimaginable loss for the village just 6 days before Christmas 💔

Every year the 💡 are switched off for an hour from 8pm, leaving only the cross on St Clements Island lit in remembrance of those lost in 1981.​​​​​​​​

The Penlee Lifeboat disaster was the last time the RNLI lost an entire crew in action. Coastal communities like ours rely heavily on the brave and selfless volunteers of the RNLI. Thank you for your service 💙​​​​​​​

Yesterday was Humphry Davy's 146th birthday 🎂 and I made him this card but it only posted to Instagram 🫠

I've been researching Humphry Davy for the Penzance Regeneration Company and from what I've learned, I'm confident he'd be a BIG fan of the culture of Penzance today 🍻🎈

Some of my favourite anecdotes, discovered from books available at The Morrab Library are of Humphry Davy performing Middle Eastern folktales from One Thousand and One Nights on a cart outside the Star Inn, or him dressing up as a ghost in a sheet to jump out and scare people. He was also a big advocate for women's education and proposed that women should be admitted to evening events at the Royal Society. He was very forward-thinking for his time, kind to the poor and loved a drink and getting giggly with Nitrous Oxide... He was a proper Penzance boy 🖤

As usual working with Robbie has been a been a joy. I was worried as the print quality of some of the screenshot images didn't print very crisp but he was so chill about it, and just excited to be a part of our little local initiative. Rob Crago is so pro-Penzance, even from afar 🩵

Don't forget to complete the ! The first answer is 'The Granary' - I accidentally edited out the answer from the article 😅 I started the quiz in Issue 3 after hearing people say they loved the magazine, but no, they hadn't read it 🤪 So I took offence and made a quiz 😂 ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Details on how to enter are found with the quiz and I pick a winner at random. Kevin was the winner from Issue 3. He won £30's worth of vouchers to spend at , and ! It turns out he volunteers at the RNLI shop a couple of doors up from Esme at Circa 21. He was delighted to win and says he will be treating his wife to nice things from the businesses he won vouchers for! 🩵

I will announce the winner of Issue 4 in the new year so you have all of December to enter. Where should I buy vouchers from for the next prize? ✨💥💬

Definitely a date for your December diaries! 🎅🏼🎄🎅🏼🎄🎅🏼🎄🎅🏼

• Newlyn School choir will be singing outside the Harbour Offices from 6:00pm ~ Penzance Silver Band will be playing carols and entertaining us throughout the evening.

• The grand switch-on ceremony of the 2024 Newlyn Harbour Lights display will follow from the balcony of Newlyn Harbour Offices. We will be joined by the Mayor of Penzance, Stephen Reynolds.

• Spectacular Firework display by Sonic Fireworks - British Firework Champions!
🎆🎇🎆

Please note ~ This will be an 8 minute hybrid firework display designed to use the quieter style effects at the beginning and then a gradual transition to traditional fireworks for the last part of the display. The fireworks will be fired at some stage during the event. It’s difficult to be specific about the exact time as prevailing weather conditions and wind speeds may impact on when the display will start.

• Father Christmas will be arriving onboard the Penlee Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ at about 6.30pm accompanied by Pendeen Pilot Gig Club in their beautifully decorated gigs.🎅🏼🎅🏼🎅🏼

• One lucky child will have the chance to switch on the lights with Father Christmas - free raffle tickets to enter this draw can be collected up until 6.45pm from a table at the front of the Harbour Offices to the right ~ next to the main entrance gates on to the pier.
