Founded in 1882, the Stratford & East London Music Festival is a competitive Music, Speech & Drama Festival with over 200 classes in various categories:

Choirs, Orchestras & Bands; Concerto; Instrumental Classes, including Recorders; Millenium & Confinemento Classes; Piano; Solo & Ensemble Singing; Speech & Dr

Every year, musicians and actors of all ages and abilities come to the Stratford & East London Music Festival from the local area and beyond, to perform and compete in a friendly and supportive environment. Share the excitement of performing, obtain feedback and tips from experienced adjudicators, and win prizes, from our beautiful, collectable certificates and button badges, to medals, cash prizes and music vouchers. We are a charitable organisation and we exist because of our brilliant team of dedicated volunteers. Help us to keep going by supporting us in other ways...

These days, support for the arts is wilting, yet everyone knows that culture and artistic expression is something that people of all ages and backgrounds benefit hugely from! Essex musicians = live in Essex, go to school/ college in Essex or born in Essex. Also includes Ilford, Wanstead, Woodford.

ESSEX YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 2023
Ongar Music Club is delighted to announce the launch of the 2023 Essex Young Musician of the Year competition. The winner of the competition will receive the First Prize of £1,000 and The Essex Young Musician of the Year Trophy to hold for one year. The winner will also be offered various paid engagements. Other generous cash prizes will be awarded.
!! THE ESSEX YOUNG MUSIC SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR AWARD !!
The club is particularly excited to announce this new award, as part of the competition, for performers under 19. There is a prize of £200 to be used for the advancement of their musical studies, and the Essex Music Scholar of the Year trophy to hold for one year. Three further prizes will be awarded to the candidates under-19, not already prize winners in the 2023 competition, who have given the most outstanding performances in their age group.
A first round will be held on Sunday 25th June 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Budworth Hall in Ongar, Essex. The semifinal and final rounds will be held on 2nd July 2023 at 2pm and 6.30pm respectively, also at the Budworth Hall, Ongar, Essex. All rounds are open to the public.
The competition is open to musicians aged 28 or under on 2nd July 2023. Applicants must have their home address in Essex, attend school or college in Essex, or have been born in Essex. This criterion includes the old Essex towns of Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford, and villages or towns which straddle the Essex border and which have an Essex-based postcode.
The closing date for entries is 31st May 2023.

It's not quite the end of the Festival!

On Saturday evening it's our grand finale, the competition to find the Young Musician of the Year 2023. Our adjudicators have selected eight musicians aged between 11-17 who they think showed exceptional talent. They will be competing for this prestigious title and a prize of £100. The evening will also include award-winning drama performances and the winner of the Felix Marr Award for piano. .

Please come along to enjoy this exciting programme. The concert begins at 6 pm at the Redbridge Music School on Fencepiece Road, Hainault, IG6 2NB. Entry is free although we ask for a small donation to support the Festival.

We are delighted to hear that our festival secretary, Stella Redburn, will be singing at Cadogan Hall on Tuesday 25 April, as part of the English Chamber Choir. Their programme is entitled 'Rachmaninov and the Glories of the Eastern Church' and features:

If you haven’t heard of these classes,
They consist of a performance of 2 or 3 disciplines;
Confinemento (2 Disciplines)
Millennium (3 Disciplines)

We had combinations like
- Singing, Cello and Piano,
- Singing and Piano,
- Drum kit, Saxaphone and Guitar,
- Speech, Clarinet, Cello
Any combination of instruments / voice / speech.

We had a really good Choirs and Bands day on Monday. Well done Modality and very well done to all our winners. A big thank you to everyone who entered. Your talent and enthusiasm is wonderful. The 2023 Festival continues next week with speech and drama, singing, piano, instrumental and concerto classes plus more! On Saturday 18th we showcase the best of best in our Young Musician of the Year event.

If you can play one movement of any concerto with any instrument, you could win a £100 cash prize.

The competition itself will take place on the evening of Thursday 16 February.

It's Deadline Day for our 2023 festival!

Our festival is open to all ages and abilities. Our aim is to support live and public performance for everyone. Professional adjudicators assess and comment on every performance, and judge who is the winner of each class.

We offer certificates for all entrants, cups for almost all class winners and cash prizes for the best of the best!

Our convenors are on hand to answer any last minute questions and our entries secretary can troubleshoot any problems with registration you may have. Full contact details can be found in our latest newsletter:
