A large fire has broken out at a marina on the Norfolk Broads destroying several boats.

Thick plumes of black smoke were seen in Chedgrave and Loddon after a fire engulfed boats on the water between Loddon Marina and Pyes Mill Picnic Area.

Firefighters from Norfolk and Suffolk sprung into action after receiving the call at 3.20pm with five crews attending the scene.

In order to put the fire out, two of the boats were purposefully sunk and the fire was fully extinguished by 5:40pm.

The incident commander for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire started on one vessel and spread to two others.

"We have sunk two boats and managed to save one.

"Efforts are being made to protect the nature reserve downriver."

It is understood that nobody was injured in the incident and that all of the boats were empty when the fire broke out.

EDP: A new image of what Ipswich Beacon Marina will look like as part of plans to remove 93 pontoons at Ipswich's 'Crown Jewel' has been published.

Associated British Ports (ABP) have submitted plans to Ipswich Borough Council to alter what the Wet Dock and its Neptune Marina would look like.

To do so, they have asked the borough council to remove 93 existing pontoons and replace them with 15 new ones.

Additionally, they will also add a foul water treatment plant and two welfare buildings on either side of the marina - with toilets and showers for the users.

Those concerned about the proposals say they understand plans to renovate the area but "shrinking its size is not the answer".

An ABP spokesperson said: "Due to the current pontoons on the Northern side of the Marina being at the end of their asset life and requiring removal, the development proposal would secure the site's future use as a marina with brand new infrastructure which will ensure that we can continue to offer to berth in this popular location of the Waterfront. "

Following the death of its creator Alan Swann last year, ABP has taken back control of Neptune Marina, renamed it Beacon Marina and plans to integrate it with its own operation.

In previous plans, the port owner showed their intention to extend Ipswich Marina by removing pontoons on both sides and renovating the area.

However, campaigners said that these plans would mean nearly 100 boats would have to leave their dock and find a place elsewhere.

They created a group called Save Ipswich Waterfront, to push their campaign further.

David Cross, who is a member of the group said: "The Marina is like the Crown Jewel of our town and ABP wants to change it from what it is.

"We need to save it, keep the boats where they are and keep this town's main leisure spot together.

"I get the need to renovate it, it needs more stuff done, but shrinking its size is not the answer."

Since the plans were originally announced in 2023, boat owners have tried to meet with ABP repeatedly in their office at Old Customs House without success.

Successful Rescue Operation on the River Bure

Last night, Humber Coastguard tasked Hemsby Broads Rescue with assisting a private cruiser that had one person on board on the River Yare. The cruiser had suffered a major failure and, due to its position, was at risk of further damage. The Gorleston Coastguard Team was also present to offer support.

To ensure the vessel's safety, the decision was made to tow it back to Great Yarmouth and secure it in a safe location. The Gorleston team played a crucial role in the operation, ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved and confirming the vessel was secure.

Our gratitude goes out to all who contributed to another successful rescue operation. We now turn our focus to preparing for our annual flagship events (Lifeboat Day & The Herring Festival), ready to respond to future calls.

14/06/2024

Peel Ports claim that the reason they cannot open Haven Bridge falls to a failed opening, 'drunken' motorists or pedestrians directing traffic and abuse being hurled at Bridge Staff according to an article in the Eastern Daily Press.

The ongoing blockade of the Norfolk Broads - caused by the refusal of operators to lift a key bridge - was triggered by drunks trying to direct traffic during an earlier opening, it can be revealed.

EDP 13.6.24

The company responsible for Haven Bridge in Great Yarmouth has finally disclosed the reason it has not opened it since April, much to the fury of boaters and marine industries who rely on being able to navigate through it to get between the Broads and the North Sea.

Peel Ports had previously cited vague 'health and safety' reasons for its decision.

However, it has now emerged that it is refusing to open the bridge because of an incident in February when the crossing malfunctioned while opening and frustrated members of the public took matters into their own hands.

While some people - who were said to be intoxicated - tried to direct traffic, others jumped over safety barriers in an attempt to see if they could still cross. Drivers were also reportedly abusive towards bridge staff.

Peel Ports fears a repeat of these chaotic scenes so is refusing to open the bridge at all, even though it has a statutory duty to open it for river traffic.

It is involved in a stand-off with Norfolk County Council, which owns the crossing, demanding that the authority do more to address its health and safety concerns before it opens the crossing again.

One firm says the continued closure of the crossing is costing it thousands of pounds in lost business, while one sailor has been marooned on the Broads for six weeks because his 100ft boat is too large to leave the waterways via the only alternative route, a lock near Lowestoft.

Meanwhile, anger among the boating community is rising. One leading figure said: "They are breaking the law, it is as simple as that. They should face consequences for doing so. They can't break their statutory obligation just because a few members of the public were abusive."

YEARS OF FRUSTRATION AND A DAY OF CHAOS

The 94-year-old bridge - which carries a major road into Yarmouth across the Yare - has been beset by problems for years.

A fault in 2019 left it out of action and needing major repairs.

Delays during the pandemic meant these were only completed at the end of last year.

But weeks later, problems began to re-emerge and on February 2 the bridge broke down again, prompting chaotic scenes.

"We saw people jumping the barriers, walking into the road and even had an intoxicated individual directing traffic - all on the same day," said Richard Goffin, director of Peel Ports, following the incident.

More than half a dozen incidents were reported over the course of a few days following the initial flashpoint on February 2, according to a spokesman.

"The point is more that they happened rather than the number of them. No one should be threatened at work," he added.

But discussions with Norfolk County Council to resolve these concerns have failed.

"NCC is refusing to accept any health and safety obligations," he added.

NCC has said it has carried out repairs on the bridge following the February incident and it is now fully operational.

BLOCKADE BACKWASH

The bridge blockade is having huge ramifications for Norfolk's boating community.

The four-year closure has cost one boatbuilding firm, Goodchild Marine, about £2m in lost business and they estimate the current closure is leaving them with thousands of pounds in extra costs.

Alan Goodchild of Goodchild Marine, says the bridge blockade is causing major headaches' for his firm. This is due to having to take lengthy diversions to test their crafts via alternative routes from their site up the river at Burgh Castle.

Alan Goodchild, who runs the business with his wife Sue, said it is "incredibly frustrating" for river users.

"As a company, it is causing massive headaches and it is hugely disruptive" he added.

COURT SHOWDOWN?

Sources within the boating community have said people are preparing for legal action against Peel Ports for failing to fulfil its statutory duty, claiming the firm could be liable for tens of thousands of pounds so far.

Peter Ward, of the Broom Owner's Club - a group of people who sail sea-faring cruisers built at the Brundall boat yard - has been a vocal critic of the issue.

"They are breaking the law, it is as simple as that," he said. "They should face consequences for doing so. They can't break their statutory obligation just because a few members of the public were abusive."

A spokeswoman said: "This is having an adverse impact on local companies and private boat owners who cannot transit the port to the sea.

"The Authority urges the two parties to resolve the matter as quickly as possible."

Punts were a common sight around the estuaries and waterways of East Anglia. The Thames Traditional Boat Festival - Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July 2024 always has a really great following, and always seems to turn up some interesting boats!

Coming to this year’s Festival is this Duck Punt. It was built in 1948 for the current owner’s father when he was at Cambridge. The punt was used for wildfowling on the Thames estuary around the Isle of Sheppey and on the Blackwater in Essex and also on the Solway Firth. After a spell in Canada and America his father moved to a farm on Dartmoor and the punt was used by his children to paddle around a large pond. The punt fell into disrepair and spent many years at the bottom of the pond until in 1997 the current owner recovered it and restored it to its current condition complete with gun and accessories. The gun will be decommissioned for the Festival and all the crucial bits left at home!!

Norfolk Broads rangers catch hundreds of boaters speeding

Hundreds of boaters have been caught speeding through the Broads in just one month.

A Broads Authority (BA) report has revealed the number of people who have been stopped by rangers and issued with warnings for going too fast and other offences during April this year.

A total of 432 boaters were reprimanded, with 371 getting off with just a verbal talking to while 61 received a written statement.

Speeding was the biggest issue for rangers, with the majority of people going over the limit in waters surrounding Wroxham - 158.

Irstead, on the River Ant, and Ludham were the next speeding hotspots, with 35 and 24 people caught.

The BA also prosecuted one boater for overstaying at a mooring and they were forced to pay out £1,214.

It comes at the start of the tourist season, with more and more people visiting the picturesque waterways of the Broads for a boating holiday.

While the figures may seem high, BA rangers were much busier during the same time period last year.

Rangers stopped 745 boaters for speeding and committing other offences - 72pc more than this year.

Hundreds of boaters have been caught going too fast on the Norfolk Broads by the Broads Authority rangers in just one month.
