A new species of vegetarian piranha has been formally described and named after the Lord of the Rings villain, Sauron, due to the round body and vertical black band on its side which looks like the fictional eye that sits atop the tower of Barad-dûr in Mordor in Tolkien’s trilogy. 🐠

Japanese manufacturer, Kowa Sporting Optics have become renowned for their exceptional premium spotting scope optics and design. But it's their affordable binocular range which may surprise many, and is possibly best described as a 'dark horse' when it comes to affordable 'mid-range' binoculars.

Alex took a good look at the Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 wide angle binoculars recently, and here are his thoughts on this model for wildlife observation.

An international team of scientists have generated the largest, most comprehensive evolutionary tree of snakes and lizards to answer how snakes went from small lizards to the highly diverse and sophisticated species we see today. 🐍

More than 100 million years ago, the ancestors of the first snakes were small lizards that lived alongside other small, nondescript lizards in the shadow of the dinosaurs. In a sudden burst of innovation in form and function, they evolved legless bodies, highly sophisticated chemical detection systems to find and track prey, and flexible skulls that enabled them to swallow large animals.
