Here’s how to ensure your strawberries thrive👇 1️⃣ **Mix It Up:** Plant a combination of June-bearing and everbearing (day-neutral) strawberries for a continuous harvest all season long. 2️⃣ **Keep Them Hydrated:** Regular watering is key, especially when the berries start to form. 3️⃣ **Mulch Matters:** Keep the weeds at bay and moisture in with a good layer of mulch. I like to use Strulch around my strawberries. As a bonus it helps keep slugs away. 4️⃣ **Harvest Often:** Pick ripe berries promptly to encourage more fruit production. 5️⃣ **Feed Them Well:** Give your strawberries a monthly feed to fuel their growth. I use a seaweed based feed from July onwards. Always water deeply and little less frequently. This will encourage plant roots to grow deeper into the soil and produce stronger, healthier plants. 2. Water the base of plants so it reaches the soil and roots where the plant needs it most. 3. And water your plants in the earlier part of the day so they water has a chance to evaporate before evening arrives when cooler temperatures set in. This will help prevent pest and disease problems which will keep your plants healthy! A great way to water your plants is using a drip irrigation system. Have you set one up yet? They are really easy to assemble and use in the beds, hanging baskets, pots, and window boxes. The best part about using them is they water your plants where they need it most and are set and forget when used with a timer. Here’s how to do it correctly to ensure your basil keeps thriving👇 1️⃣ **Height Check:** Start pruning when your basil hits 6-8 inches tall. 2️⃣ **Timing is Everything :** Harvest early in the morning for the plumpest, freshest leaves. 3️⃣ **Above a Node:** Snip the stem with the upper leaves cluster just above a leaf node. See the two tiny leaves on each side? This is where two new stems will grow. This will help your plant become more full and bushy 🪴 4️⃣ **Top-Down Approach:** Always harvest from the top to keep your basil bushy and full. 5️⃣ **Leaf Technique:** If you only need a few leaves, pluck each leaf right at the base by the stem to encourage more growth. 6️⃣ **Bud Watch:** To keep your plant producing tasty leaves, remove flower buds as soon as they appear. 7️⃣ **One-Third Rule:** Never remove more than a third of your plant at one time. By following these steps, especially cutting just above a leaf node, your basil will keep sprouting new leaves all season. Don’t be shy; regular cutting encourages more leaves and prevents legginess. Keep up with regular pruning every week or two, and you’ll never run out of fresh basil! This is the Zanderij Crailoo Nature Bridge in the Netherlands! Its position, stretching a half-mile over a busy highway and railroad, allows local wildlife to cross over safely! It is currently the world’s largest wildlife crossing, however, a bigger one is expected to be completed outside of Los Angeles, California in 2026. It is estimated that over 350 million animals in the United States, and over 194 million birds and 29 million mammals across Europe are killed by traffic every YEAR! As our cities and countries become more densely populated, our roadways, waterways, and rail networks will need to continue to expand too; however, this CAN and MUST be done in a responsible, earth-conscious way. Wildlife bridges have countless benefits for both animals and humans in that they help to restore migration paths for animals, resolve issues caused by habitat fragmentation, reconnect ecosystems, provide more green spaces to urbanised areas, and ultimately reduce human-wildlife collisions.  In addition to public awareness, our legislators have a huge part to play in ensuring that common-sense innovations and designs like these are integrated as non-negotiables into our society. In the US, for example, legislation on wildlife crossings has only recently been passed under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, whereby $350 million was set aside for the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program, which over five years will fund state and federal agencies and tribal nations to evaluate the need for/build wildlife crossings in their respective areas.
