Following our cancelled EGM on 03/07/24, we are holding an online elections to elect our final essential committee members. This is our last opportunity to elect a secretary and treasurer before we get added to the Save a Society list which we absolutely do not want to happen 😢 we have heard some people are interested in the role of secretary but we need a treasurer as well so please do put yourself forward! We can offer lots of help with you navigating your new role!
The roles of Italian and Catalan editor will be elected outside of this online election.
All the information is on the post but please drop us a message if you have any questions! Good luck to everyone running! 🤍

We have some details about electing our remaining available positions!🎉 This includes the editors positions as well as the committee positions we absolutely need to get filled to ensure the Linguist can continue next year!
We will be holding an EGM on ‼️Thursday 23rd May at 6pm BST on Zoom‼️ Make sure you scroll to the end of the post so you get all the info! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to send us a message.
If you have attended a society’s AGM before this will function in exactly the same way, it’s very laid back, just come with a few sentences about why you are applying! Don’t forget you can run for both a committee and an editing role!
The link to the google form to sign up and receive the Zoom link is in our bio. Please fill out this form even if you are only coming to vote!
We look forward to seeing you on the 23rd!
Love from the 2023/24 committee🌍🤍

Our AGM is tomorrow! (19th April @ 5pm on Zoom) Are you thinking of running for a role? Hear from some of our current team about what being part of The Linguist is like and find out more info! 🤩
Fill out the form below to receive the Zoom link for the AGM and let us know if you have any questions or if you’re considering running for a position✈️🌍
We recently did an Instagram Q&A to answer some of your questions, so here they are below!
Q: Can I be on the team if I’m on my Year Abroad?
A: Yes! You can be an editor of any section on our team, even if you are on your Year Abroad, because this can be done remotely!
Q: Is being on the team a lot of work?
A: Being part of The Linguist is not a massive time commitment and is something you can definitely do alongside Uni, even in final year! Generally, it averages out that committee members would commit around 1-2 hours to The Linguist a week, mostly in the weeks leading up to the next issue (there are 4 issues per year!) Editors generally commit around 1 hour to The Linguist per issue.
Q: Can I do more than 1 role?
A: Yes! Because it isn’t a huge time commitment, people often take on a committee role and an editor role, or two editor positions!
Q: Do I need to have any experience in journalism?
A: No! No prior journalism experience is needed for any of our committee or editor roles! It is easy to pick up the different processes and how the magazine runs, and everyone works together as one big team to produce each issue!
Q: What does the treasurer do?
A: The treasurer’s main responsibilities are applying for grants each semester, managing finances, and organising the printing of the magazine with the printing company!
Let us know if you have any more questions and if you’re interested in running for a role!✈️

Our Story
We are the UoB Linguist, a magazine for language, culture and travel enthusiasts at the University of Birmingham!
Available in print form on campus and on our website, we’ll keep you updated with everything from world affairs to sport and style, travel, year abroad tips and book and film reviews.
The magazine is split into two halves: First is the English half, with sections for Current Affairs, Life and Style, Travel, Culture and Food and Drink. The second half is made up of different language sections- our permanent language sections this year are German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Catalan and Mandarin, but we also have a feature language section for those wanting to write in a different language.
New this year is also the Linguist Blog, which you can write for as many times as you like throughout the year once you have paid your membership. This is the perfect way to try out blogging without having the commitment of running your own blog.
To write for us, go to the Guild of Students website to buy your £5 annual membership. Once you have done this, either get in touch with one of the editors (below) to write for a section, or get in touch with publicity officer (Lily King) if you’d like to write for the blog!
Below is the Linguist Team for the 2019/2020 academic year:
Chair: Emma Velho
Secretary: Maria Allon
Publicity and Social: Lily King
Treasurer: Megan Nicholls
