Leader of Portsmouth City Council Cllr Steve Pitt speaks passionately (PCC Full Council 9th Dec) that for 18 months, Portsmouth City Council has worked to identify childcare gaps. Last year, the council allocated £100,000 to supplement government funding. Another £120,000 is needed in the next budget. Breakfast clubs aren't just about food. Teachers see improved concentration, attendance, behavior, and overall wellbeing. No child in Portsmouth should start the day hungry. These clubs truly transform a child's entire school day.

Cllr George Fielding (PCC Full Council 9th Dec) makes the case for his motion before council marking the government's increase in free nursery hours and extension of free breakfast clubs to schools.

Cost is a major barrier to having children. Free nursery hours are a relief, especially with an aging society. Promoting these benefits can empower parents to increase their work hours and support their families. Let's ensure more families can benefit from this opportunity.

Cllr Charlotte Gerada (PCC Full Council Dec 9th) makes the case why support for nursery spaces helps families now, and also helps potential future couples make the decision to start a family.

Cllr Suzy Horton (PCC Full Council 0th Dec) speaks about the need to amend the Labour motion regarding expanding free breakfast clubs and free childcare to more accurately reflect arrangements already in place in the city. Cllr Horton states that while supportive of the focus, it needs to better reflect reality for council officers, early years providers, and families. Authenticity is key.

Carrying a knife isn't the way to protect yourself. It can hurt someone, and you'll get into trouble. We need to examine why people think it's okay to carry knives in the first place and address the root causes of the problem. What do you think about this?

Cllr Leonie Oliver shares her thoughts as a mother on the dangers of carrying a knife and the escalation of street violence when people might think they won't get caught or that the punishment is too lenient.

Purchasing knives is too easy!

"These are not utility knives, these are not cooking knives - there's no wild boar running around.."

PCC's Full Council 9th December Cllr Chris D**e shared how a friend bought display knives (including one 'Rambo' style). All that was needed was a driving licence and a shop that writes down the license number. No questions asked. There is no need for knives like these.
