The “Golden Age” of British Railways wasn’t only about the incomparable network of steam services, the most complex and comprehensive anywhere in the world, but also the many service operations that were vital to keep the network running.

One of the most important, as it is today, is the Permanent Way Department although it was all done a lot differently then.

In the June issue of Steam World Malcolm Lobban tells of his career in the Permanent Way gangs – the camaraderie, everything done by hand and strong backs, the characters, brewing tea in a Tate and Lyle golden syrup tin and the exacting standards.

It’s a fascinating reminiscence and part of the rich history of British Rail steam.

Don’t miss out on this and plenty of other excellent features and many brilliant pictures in the June issue. Buy your copy today https://bit.ly/STWOJune24

There is no information with this view of Gresley ‘V3’ 2-6-2T No. 67646 which is thought to have been taken by Trevor Owen. It is coupled bunker-to-bunker with Stanier two-cylinder ‘4MT’ 2-6-4T No. 46239 on an RCTS rail tour – but where and when?

Swindon-allocated ‘8750’ class 0-6-0PT No. 3682 boasts a unique and distinctly ‘non-PC’ front numberplate, alongside a Collett tender wearing the BR lion-and-wheel emblem. Had someone in the foundry been making unauthorised plates?

One for the weekend! 🚂

How neat and tidy the whole railway scene appears in this view of ‘K1’ 2-6-0 No. 62005 approaching the terminus at Richmond in Yorkshire. The station, and the branch from Eryholme, closed in 1969 but all the fine railway buildings, except the goods shed seen in this picture, survive in a variety of commercial, residential and leisure uses.

Most BR-built locomotives had short careers in traffic. Two ‘16XX’ class 0-6-0PTs stand out of use at Swindon Works. No. 1635 still carries the original BR ‘lion & wheel’ emblem and red-backed numberplate it would have had from new, and behind it, spark-arrestor equipped No. 1661 appears to have suffered a serious water-treatment mishap and is stained white with the chemical.

How about we conclude the week with a photo from the September 14th 1963?

The Fireman trims the coal in the bunker as Collett ‘61XX’ 2-6-2T No. 6111 waits to depart from Chipping Norton with the REC ‘Chiltern 200’ railtour on September 14th 1963. Though this photograph is unmarked, it appears to be by Trevor Owen.

Let's wrap up Monday with a snapshot from Chris Leigh's collection.

Caledonian Railway 4-2-2 No. 123 was designed by Dugald Drummond and built by Neilson & Co in 1886. Preserved by the LMS it was returned to steam in 1959. Here, in the company of LSWR ‘T9’ 4-4-0 No. 30120 it headed a special to the Bluebell Railway and is thought to be at East Grinstead in this photograph. C.J.L. COLLECTION

Had it not been on the proposed route of the M25 motorway, the Westerham branch might have been preserved. It seems a great leap forwards from ‘H’ class 0-4-4T No. 31177 and two pre-Grouping carriages, to a 70mph motorway and perhaps that stark contrast is what caused the downfall of this and many other sections of railway.

The Southern Region treated most of its named locomotives as mixed traffic types, though few were painted in mixed traffic livery. One that did carry BR lined black livery was ‘Schools’ 4-4-0 No. 30914 Eastbourne - but it would later revert to green.

One of Chris Leigh's favourite Southern locomotives were the ‘H16’ 4-6-2Ts and that’s why he bought this slide off eBay, despite a complete lack of information.

Can you help? No. 30516 is apparently working a railtour (Special 2?) from an LSWR terminus – but where? The lower quadrant lattice post signal is a thing of beauty but its position above the signalman’s head reminds us a little of “The Ladykillers’!

Good morning! 😀 Bright and early this Monday morning, we share with you a photo from the CJL Collection. BR disposed of the lovely half-timbered Kidderminster station with indecent haste following ‘the discovery of timber defects’. It was said that the building had been designed for Stratford-upon-Avon but was diverted to Kidderminster when the original station there was destroyed by fire.

A far cry from North Cornwall, as rebuilt ‘West Country’ 4-6-2 No. 34031 Torrington races past Raynes Park on the down fast, with a Bournemouth express, in a picture that looks like it might have come from the camera of Geoff Rixon, but is unmarked.

Judging by the smokebox inscription and the home-made front numberplate, this picture of Riddles BR Standard ‘5MT’ 4-6-0 No. 73029 at an unrecorded SR station (possibly Salisbury) would seem to date from the end of Southern steam, 55 years ago!

There was something very special about railtours in the 1960s, perhaps because every one was potentially the last over that line. On March 27 1965, the RCTS and Plymouth Railway Circle ran the ‘Exmoor Ranger’ to Ilfracombe and Halwill. The North Devon & Cornwall Junction Light Railway had already closed and special dispensation was required to run a passenger train over it. Here, Ivatt ‘2MT’ 2-6-2Ts Nos. 41206 and 41291 head the train, we think, near Meeth Halt. Sadly, the slide carries no information.
