This is where the solo artist journey began for singer/songwriter Kevin "KD" Dyer ... his 2002 debut album "Time For Conversation" was a strictly-acoustic affair and released as a limited run of CDs and is now considered quite a rarity! Now finally, after 22 years, the 2024 Remaster is getting a digital release on the InCompany label (release date TBC).

2 years to this very day was the Platinum Jubilee edition of our Magor Open Mic at The Golden Lion (in Magor of course) and as you can see it was a pretty lively one!
The pub seems to be closed at the moment, but there is talk on the "local socials" of new owners taking it on in July - could we see the return of the Magor Open Mic?

Laying down the guitar parts (hence the "guitar face"!) for new track "FINEx3" with the Lindo Guitars White Dove semi-acoustic. Gone for the approach of recording plenty of takes, to be sifted through later. For some of the takes the guitar is miked up with a Focusrite VoiceMaster pre-amp, for some using the DI. All going recording through an Audient EVO16.

22 years after it's initial limited-edition CD run, the album "Time For Conversation" by singer/songwriter Kevin Dyer is going to get a digital release. This is the first full length album InCompany Multimedia worked on, so getting some big nostalgia vibes listening back to the original mixes.

Impressed by the support from Adam at Spectrasonics today - who helped me get some plugins purchased back in the early 2000's up and running again - Stylus RMX still sounding an awesome drums/percussion/loops plugin.

Same age (2005) as the Carillon AC1 Studio PC mentioned earlier this week, also getting rid of an M-Audio Delta 1010 8in/8out Audio Interface (also 1in/1out MIDI) with external breakout box. Needs a desktop or rack PC rather than a laptop, to be able to plug the card into.

The Carillon AC1 "Studio PC" is finally coming out of the equipment rack . Bought back in 2005 it's had a very reliable run, but now time for a new PC - thinking of a tower PC this time round to free up space in the rack for some more outboard!

More studio tidying - this time of demos that we'd been sent over the years. Some we'll be holding on to though - like this 2004 demo CD from Bristol duo "Fullcircle" consisting of Nic and Neil - previously known as "Autopilot" (hosted an Open Mic at Christmas Steps in Bristol).

It was a nice surprise to hear from one of our previous clients - Jo W**d dropped us a message yesterday to see if we could find her recordings ... from July 2008 ... Mission complete - now Jo is now able to enjoy her songs once more!

Our archive from back when our studio was open to the general public spans just under 500 CD-ROMs and 150 DVD-ROMs covering the period from 1998 to 2012, we've also been slowly going through these discs and transferring them to hard drives, which is just as well since some of the earliest CD-ROMs are now completely unreadable.

A new feature ... ... covering some of the songs we've produced over the years for the various artists we've been lucky to work - and giving a bit more background.

This is a song called "No More Tears" by one of our favourite vocalists "Nikitah" - she arrived at our first production session back in 2002 with the vocal melody and lyrics pretty much in their finished form.

We cut a basic demo at that initial session with just piano, drums (both from a Emu Proteus 2000) and a lead vocal - as is often the case there is something quite haunting about that demo version that maybe is lost in the completed track.

One thing special about "No More Tears" is that it was the first production that was done 100% in our own studio, which was set up in various bedrooms of the house at that early stage.

If we can get permission, we will upload some snippets of the demo version and completed track. We've also still got the multitracks on archive so could be interesting to take you through some of the sounds that were being used in the early noughties!

Just a reminder that Magor Open Mic is currently "on pause" due to the sad closing of The Golden Lion. So if you turn up on what would have been the date of the next one (Thursday 30th November), the doors will be shut :-(

More vintage/retro gear found in our ongoing clearout - this is our Soundcraft Spirit Folio 10 mixing desk purchased sometime around the mid 90's after getting by with a rudimentary self-built mixer. If you worked with us before 2005 (when we upgraded to a Mackie Onyx 1640), this bit of kit was probably involved (although lead vocals were usually going through a Focusrite Voicemaster mic preamp first).

Having a good clearout of the attic above the studio this weekend. But this one's a keeper - a Yamaha DJX from the late 1990's. Even after getting some more "serious" kit like the Emu Proteus 2000, the sounds from DJX were still finding their way onto some of our early 2000's productions like the "No More Tears EP" by Nikitah (2002). Having a clear out/sort of the studio attic at the moment - this Zoom 1202 dates back to the mid 90s and was probably the first multi-effects unit we had when starting out. Although it powers up, it seems to no longer be working properly, getting some white noise type sounds on top of the reverb out of one channel and nothing out of the other! If anybody wants it for free as a repair project before it is recycled, drop us a message!

Magor Open Mic is back again this Thursday (28th September 8pm) at The Golden Lion - but what happened last month? Duo Peter and Steve joined us all the way from Cardiff - including a great version of Walk Of Life (Dire Straits). Let's give it up for Kieran, who has now graduated from coming to watch the open mic to playing at it! He's also brought along his dad who just happened to be a top Neil Diamond tribute act (sorry didn't get a photo due to playing the guitar for him!). Peter was back on for a solo spot treating us to a fair chunk of the Sgt. Peppers album. Not forgetting your monthly dose of rousing singalongs with Mark Hitchins.
