Recorded on the 22nd April 1973.
1973 , if you werenât there, was the year the Opec embargo increased the price of crude oil fourfold. The hike in energy prices pushed up business costs and reduced disposable incomes of those not in the wealth business. Sounding familiar? This was simultaneously inflationary and deflationary, which brought us all a new word, Stagflation. Who needs a time machine eh?

Happy Birthday me! Fly Guy aka Fly Records (UK)! 52 ehâŠ
Todayâs date, 52 years ago, twas a Monday. The 25-year-old Malcolm Jones started his first day in the Fly Records office on its own inaugural day, located in the office space in Essex Musicâs HQ on Oxford Street in the heart of Londonâs West End.
Anyway back to Malcolm. To label him a music enthusiast is to minimise his obsession and passion for the music he loved, which drove his life as he followed his music muse. At EMI his love for the English underground music scene had led to a close friendship with Syd Barrett and Malcolm cajoled (or rather wore down) EMI suits to allow him to establish the influential Harvest Records, probably the main seed of the art of packaging music/records which is now de-rigour. Once he faced budgetary restrictions the jump to help Platz launch Fly was timely.
Today is a good day to remember Malcolm. His close friend John Beecher at Rollercoaster Records knew him better than most. John ran the British Buddy Holly Fan Club and had a close connection with the Coral label (a subsidiary of Decca Records) releasing Buddyâs records in Britain. Malcolm was a hardcore Buddy-head and on joining the BHFC began communicating with John with a brim-full of ideas.
Tony Hall ran Coral label back then and was a recipient of one (unsuccessful) job application from Malcolm. Anyone reading this post who knows a bit about our history will be mentally joining dots between those names by now. Tony set up the Deram label at Decca and signed Essex Musicâs production outfit New Breed, headed by David Platz and Denny Cordell.
Anyway back to Malcolm. To label him a music enthusiast is to minimise his obsession and passion for music he loved.
Malcolm stayed at Fly for two years, leaving when the label was switched to Cube Records. Hereâs Malcolmâs CV where he can tell you more⊠in his own words (thanks to John Beecher who still has the CV filed in his Aladdinâs Cave).
Malcolm joined Polydor after leaving us working directly with⊠The Osmonds (who actually recorded several songs Malcolm had pitched to them), James Brown, Gloria Gaynor, Jimmy Ruffin, Millie Jackson as well as The Hollies and The New Seekers. His love for back catalogue was fulfilled organising re-issues of Phil Spector (repackaging his entire output), and compilations on Stax, King and other labels.
One of his proudest moments was when he compiled âThe Complete Buddy Hollyâ for MCA which attracted a review that stated âthe standard by which all future compilations will be judgedâ.
In 1981 he took a sabbatical to set up a collectors shop in Wimbledon. Never without multiple ideas concurrently on the go Malcolm worked on various projects documenting his vast musical knowledge but illness brought an early demise in February 1990.
You can find info about Malcolm on various sites dedicated to Syd Barrett or Harvest Records compilation reissues, but one little-known aspect of his musical life was that he was briefly in a band himself. Pictured here with a Stratocaster. Quelle surpris!
