Driving Sounds will be back at The UK Audio Show this year, demonstrating an exciting fleet of cars.

With an emphasis on sound, visitors can experience Hi-fi sound in several vehicles and receive expert advice on turning their car into the ultimate listening room.

You can ask for a specific genre, title, and artist or let your demonstrator play some tracks you may not have heard before.

All visitors receive a free copy of the latest issue of Driving Sounds magazine and have the opportunity to get a detailed quote on upgrading any vehicle.

Audison Prima APS 8 R is a shallow 8” subwoofer. With its innovative design, Audison produces a subwoofer that maintains a decent cone excursion. This means the sub moves plenty of air despite its shallow size, providing strong, rich, low frequencies 🔊

As with all Audison Prima products, it remains exceptionally musical. Where many subs play a few frequencies well, the APS 8 R articulates perfectly across the entire frequency range you throw at them.

In Jack Walsh’s NSX, the subwoofer slotted into the factory-standard mounting position behind the seats. It reaches lower and provides more output than the standard unit, and the controlled power brought a big smile to our faces.

We are seeing an increase in cars with front woofer positions that will accept an 180mm woofer. This is great news for Jack. He likes bass, and having big woofers up front helps to add deep, powerful bass to his Honda NSX. The Hertz Mille Legend ML 1800’s in this car are supplemented by the incredible Hertz Mille Legend ML 280 tweeters. These provide surprisingly low frequencies that helps them to integrate with the woofers and provide a linear frequency response across the audio spectrum.⁠
⁠
Mille Legends are not only dynamic but unerringly accurate. This makes them perfect for a low-slung supercar sporting a 3.5L engine. They will play many musical genres without missing a beat, making them ideal for Jack’s high-energy tastes.⁠

Even at speed, Jack enjoys precise and controlled sound with a good pinch of full, rich bass.⁠

Honda-loving IT engineer Jack Walsh has music in his DNA🧬

His father was a music producer who used the family home as a studio, so music was everywhere.

Naturally, with that sort of background, standard fit audio is never going to cut it. Jack has taken all his cars to his local installer for audio upgrades, and this rare Honda NSX Hybrid deserved a top-notch install.

As a classic in the making, the NSX also deserved to remain as stock as possible. As is almost always the case these days, his installer was briefed to make the car sound tremendous but without affecting the styling or functionality of the original design.

The only visible clues to this car’s excellent audio system are the modified tweeter pods designed to set the tweeters on the axis (pointing at the listener’s ears).👂

Tiny Enhancer⁠

Hertz has become quite adept at producing signal processors. This extremely compact and highly durable DSP is no exception and suits harsh outdoor environments such as a motorbike or a marine craft, but is quite at home in the complex environment of any motor vehicle.⁠
⁠
Adding speakers and amplifiers to outdoor projects is becoming more popular. Like cars, speaker placement is often chosen for practical reasons rather than because they make sense sonically. In a perfect world, a listener would have a pair of speakers pointing towards their ears. In some applications, this is not physically possible. Hertz puts a lot of effort into designing speakers that compensate for this; however, having a DSP can further help distribute the sound so that everyone gets a near-perfect experience.⁠

Driving Sounds celebrates great Hi-fi upgrades for the car. An equally important celebration is on behalf of music itself.🎷⁠

With the advent of easy streaming, we have noticed that people’s musical tastes are becoming far broader and more sophisticated. We get to meet young people who listen to orchestral soundtracks, not just big beats and heavy bass. As a result, the audience for manufactured pop music is becoming very young, with under 15’s being the main drivers for the success of “major” artists.⁠
⁠
Keith Innes has enjoyed a long and varied journey through music, and although it is natural for him to cling on to music he enjoyed in the past, he is still discovering new things.⁠

As you will read in our article, Mercedes Cathargo—Pleasure After Pain, despite its gargantuan size, space is tight for establishing proper Hi-fi in this vehicle.⁠
⁠
The rear speakers are relatively small, and some bass reinforcement was always going to be necessary. This is supplied by a mighty Audison active 8” subwoofer box, which in this installation had to be mounted in an underfloor cubby accessed from outside the vehicle.⁠
⁠
The Audison Prima APBX 8 AS active subwoofer delivers powerful sub-bass from its internal 320 watts RMS amplifier. Fortunately, low bass frequencies are not directional. Despite feeling physically remote from the rest of the system, the sound from this compact bass beast integrates perfectly with the sound from all other speakers. ⁠

The result seems to be a magical sonic connection between all of the elements in the system. ⁠

The standard rear speaker mounting positions in this Mercedes Cathargo present a huge obstacle to good Hi-fi, and especially stereo image.⁠
⁠
Owner Keith Innes wanted to enjoy Hi-fi quality while relaxing in the lounge area. FOUR MASTER Partners Motor Mods created a new speaker position in the cooker end panel to spread the sound across the vehicle.⁠
⁠
The result is highly impressive, with an image that plays high and wide. Naturally, the sound is well-balanced across the entire audio spectrum with precise timing and high energy when required, or a more relaxed performance depending on the music being listened to.⁠

The Mercedes Cathargo's standard door mounting positions for woofers are asymmetric. This is not unique but is a challenge. ⁠
⁠
Equalising the balance so that the stereo image remains symmetrical is slightly less challenging with woofers than with tweeters. This is because low-frequency sound is less directional. ⁠
⁠
Blessed with a wide dispersion characteristic and an armoury of processing power available in the amp, the speakers deliver a perfect stereo image.⁠

Mounting replacement tweeters in a Mercedes Cathargo presents some challenges.⁠
⁠
Up front, the original positions are on top of the dashboard, facing up towards the screen. Thanks to the Audison Prima AP 1P's super-wide dispersion characteristic, they provide a great stereo image and crisp high frequencies directly to the listener’s ears.⁠
⁠
Mounting the tweeters symmetrically in the lounge area was impossible. However, installer Motor Mods was able to use all of the trickery of the amplifier's “bit” processing to ensure that the sound was equally good in the rear as in the front.⁠

Keith Innes’ motorhome is a beast. It is a Mercedes Cathargo and is almost eight meters long. As a lifelong music lover, Keith naturally wanted to upgrade the average system supplied by Mercedes. This took him to Motor Mods in Tewkesbury, where he received the best advice on what would suit his needs.⁠
⁠
Despite the vehicle's size, space for speakers is surprisingly tight, and some compromises were required. ⁠
⁠
However, he was in great hands and ended up with a two-zone Audison Prima system that scratches his musical itch while driving or parked and relaxing in the lounge area.⁠
