Emily White's new album 'Made Human' takes its name from Mozart's Et incarnatus est... et homo factus est, the literal translation of which is “He was made human”.

Emily writes that 'it was written by Mozart for his wife Constanza to sing. It is beautiful and full of joy. I found fascinating the detail of their lives – that he chose to work in the central room of their apartment where she was singing as she washed up and looked after the children, rather than alone in his own room. It›s technical and virtuosic but it's also in my mind full of love. There is something surprising (outrageous?) in taking such a renowned soprano aria to play on the trombone, but it shows the glittering sunshine of the instrument.'

A new review from of Trio Ilona’s Schumann album from Early Music America.

Anne E. Johnson writes ‘By now, we’re used to the astonishing insights gleaned by 19th-century classics performed in a historically informed style. The first song on Emily White's new album 'Made Human' is 'The Last Letter', a setting by Csanyi-Wills of a devastating letter written by his grandmother Irene Csanyi to her children, written in 1944 in Budapest during the N**i occupation. It opens 'My beloved children, I’m saying farewell. The pain of being so far from you is unbearable, but know that I’m with you in spirit. Love each other and don’t forget me. '

Emily says "the first song’s meaning is very hard to bear, and took time to prepare for recording... there’s something about its quality of devastating simplicity - not wallowing in tragedy. It tells us there’s something coming, she knows it— foreboding and yet also somehow accepting; walking open-eyed into what we know is coming, and all that’s left behind is love."

'Made Human' will be out on July 26th.

Emily White's incredible new recording 'Made Human' is striking for its humanity and emotional depth.

Katy Jones, principal trombone of The Hallé, says "With the honesty and sincerity of Emily's playing, these songs have no need for the actual voice. Her playing has fun, frivolity and romantic love for us in the Stanford, yet pure devastation in Csanyi-Wills' setting of The Last Letter. Throughout this incredible CD, Emily’s sense of playfulness, alongside her deep sensitivity for life and the people close to her comes across so strongly you really feel you are there with her for every line. Emily doesn’t invite you to listen, she wants you to join her, and you will hang on her every ‘word’."

Two singles from the album are available now to stream on all platforms, and the album will be released on July 26th.

Trombonist and composer John Kenny responds to Emily White's new album 'Made Human'. One of Kenny's favourite tracks from the recording, 'Spring in an unreal world' is the second single to be released ahead of the album's launch later this month, and will be out tomorrow, July 12th.

'Made Human really does speak to me - you not only make the trombone sing, you project both the emotional content and poetic structure of these songs; the words are missing, and yet still understood.

My own two favourite pieces, 'The last letter' by Michael Csany-Wills and 'Spring in an unreal world' by Torbjorn Hultmark, the music and and your interpretation of it are truly "songs without words'' - in the sense that the depth and meaning of those words are present and understood, and yet not spoken. The poignant fact that both of the writers were certain of impending death, writing to and for the people they most loved in this world, is rendered with an aching beauty.'

The second single from trombonist Emily White's new album 'Made Human' will be released this Friday, July 12th. Pianist Sam Haywood joins Emily for this exquisite album of song, due for release on July 26th.

'Spring in an Unreal World' by Swedish composer Torbjörn Hultmark is a setting of a poem by Emily's husband, poet Brian Nisbet, written for the couple as a wedding present.

Spring in an Unreal World
Brian Nisbet (1956- 2015)

She comes to me in the morning,
Like a verdant surprise of birdsong
Vibrant as frost,
Scattering vanilla and chamomile.
Singing spontaneous rhapsodies
A celebration of living things
A euphony
An energy
In this unreal world

She comes to me in the evening
Like the serenity of mountains
Calm as a caress
Lingering over a quality malt
Exploring an uncertain intimacy
Of things half said, and things unsayable
In the silence
In the stillness
Of this unreal world

Helen Vollam, Principal Trombone of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, welcomes Emily White’s new album ‘Made Human’.

‘The playing on this disc is exquisitely beautiful. Ivor Gurney’s ‘Sleep’ and George Butterworth’s ‘Loveliest of Trees’ are both so achingly expressive and heartfelt, that after a few moments you completely forget that you are listening to a trombone; it is simply a human voice.

The choice of music is wonderfully varied in style, with some worthy new additions to the repertoire by Torbjorn Hultmark and Michael Csányi-Wills.

Refreshing and enthralling; a joy from start to finish.’

Emily White's upcoming album 'Made Human' explores the incredible emotional range of song, sung through the trombone in her own original arrangements.

Telling the genesis story of her desire to interpret the richness of song repertoire on her instrument, Emily says "I heard a fellow student sing the Cradle Song by Warlock in a student concert and remember the stillness she created with her voice - I knew I wanted to play it."

'Made Human' will be available on July 26th, and the first single is available to stream now, wherever you get your music.

For her new album 'Made Human', Emily White is joined by pianist Sam Haywood, whose recording with the Galliard Ensemble 'From the Beginning' was released on Deux-Elles earlier this year.

Speaking about their collaboration, Emily says 'I knew that I liked him as a person, and knew he was a fabulous pianist but I’d never played with him and didn’t know how we’d fit. So we arranged a rehearsal in quite a small room, a big symphonic trombone and a grand piano, to play some of this, and we only had one hour. I got the instrument out, started playing, and we instantly clicked.'

Hear their first single, Clara Schumann's 'Romanze' wherever you listen to music, and join us in anticipating the album release on July 26th.

'Ever since its invention in the mid-1400s, the trombone has been used as a voice, and I think it's great at it!'

Out this Friday - the first single from trombonist Emily White's new album 'Made Human', with pianist Sam Haywood.

Dedicated to her lifelong friend, violinist Joseph Joachim, Clara Schumann's Romanze is originally for violin and piano. Emily says 'I realised that that might work on trombone, so I tried it and loved the way it sang: it’s like she’s written a song without words. I love the dedication “to my dear friend, Joachim”. It’s all about the love that exists between musical friends, which is a very powerful kind of love.'

Speaking about 'Made Human' Katy Jones, Principal Trombone The Hallé, says 'with the honesty and sincerity of Emily's playing, these songs have no need for the actual voice. ….incredible CD'. The digital and physical album will be released on July 26th.
