Devon County Show 16-18 May 2024

The whole team at Devon County Show pulled together when the weather turned nasty, jumping into action to make both visitors and competitors as good an experience as possible. In some of the classes early morning on the second day the judge needed binoculars to see the exhibits as the Devon mist set in and clouded over the rings. Then there was the mud! Those that went on the first day got away with it really, as they enjoyed some lovely sunshine. When it was time for people to leave a plethora of tractors ferried round to help pull out what would have been stricken vehicles. Although there was a wait to get pulled out, visitors and competitors alike all agreed how efficient the show was in organising the exit from the showground. Well Done those Tractor Drivers!

Having judged al the In Hand classes and section championships all the successful champions came forward to contend the Price Family In Hand Supreme of Show which is one of the most difficult Horse of the Year Show tickets to gain. Whispers around the ring were “Could he do it again” “will it be hat trick” “will this judge like him or not” They were all talking about Jamie Frost handling Cathy Wood’s Connemara Champion Clover Hill Magic who had won his third Connemara Championship on his third visit to Devon County show. Well, the judge did like him, he did win a hat trick and he did do it again.

Afterwards Jamie commented “This little white pony is the gift that keeps on giving and even in some frightful weather and ground conditions (DeJaVu of Royal Windsor) he took it all in his stride.
It’s always very special winning at my home County Show and even more poignant as it was exactly this day 5 years ago Contepomi won (the then) Cuddy Qualifier here. Thank you Cathy Wood as always for giving me these super ponies to show and to everyone that helps”. (Contepomi who Jamie was referring to, is the prolific Connemara stallion Contepomi Cashel who Jamie successfully showed for Cathy Wood)

Taking home the reserve In hand supreme was the Highland Champion Fleetwoods Loch Lomond fresh from the North Somerset Show where they stood In hand champion and shown by Rhiannon Randall.

Dwindling numbers forward in the Horse showing classes at County Shows seems to be the trend nowadays, so it is good to see that the county shows still support the Local Hunter classes where this year’s winner was The Chunky Monkey ridden by Ella Netley. However, the classes at Devon County still attracted the professionals taking home the Hunter championship was Jayne Ross on Twinshock Warrior with the reserve champion won by Clare Oliver on Greenhall all Business. Melanie Hennah from just across the border in Cornwall had a good win in the Working Hunter riding A.S Finistere.

Apart from the showing classes at Devon County the show offers a huge variety of equine classes and demonstrations, in the main ring there was show jumping, scurry driving, Ben Atkinson action display team, a parade of Hounds from the local hunts, a hunt relay and Heavy Horse displays.. In other rings around the show was Ed Channin the para dressage rider who gave a fantastic demonstration of the discipline, Bicton School of Equine Studies gave a demonstration in the Phil Ring along with more Heavy Horses with trade vehicles, and traditional harness classes.

Torbay & District Riding Club
Report by Ann Warwick

Our first show of the season was a great success and a very busy one. The sun shone and the ground conditions were perfect at the Redpost Showground, near Totnes in Devon.

There were ROR qualifiers which were extremely well supported, judged by Helen Nelmes. Other qualifiers included South West Ponies Association, Sunshine Tour and for TDRC Members the STARS qualifier classes got underway.

The show jumping ring was busy with Reg Stabback in the judging seat his 1st-3rd combinations in each class, qualifying for the Sunshine Tour.

Cath Anderson was our Working Hunter judge and her Champion was Zoe Coombes with Claddagh Star Light, Reserve taken by Kelcy Walsh riding Frankie

The In-Hand ring had bumper entries and judge Vicky Joy had her work cut out. Her champion was Telynau Denver, handled by Carla Hennig-Brown, with reserve going to Graham Newton handling The Lord Clyde.

The Ridden Ponies were judged by Terry Stevens and his Champion was Summer Boustead with Annandale Earl Grey and Zoe Coombes took Reserve with Claddagh Star Light.

The Ridden Horses were judged by Jane Taylor, whose champion was Jenny Carr on The Gooner, who also won the ROR Ridden qualifier, Reserve going to Hannah Davis on Woody Courage. Jenny also took Supreme Champion and Hannah the Reserve Supreme.

One of the official photographers was Holly Stacey Photography and we have a selection of images featured here from across all rings that depicts the event. If you missed Holly on the day and want to purchase a photo from the show please contact her direct via her page Holly Stacey Photography as she has plenty more available.

Voltaire Design Grassroots Championships

Taking place immediately before the main Mars Badminton Horse Trials the Voltaire Design Grassroots Championships is a brilliant competition that gives amateur riders the chance to live their dream of competing at ‘Badminton’ around The Duke of Beaufort’s estate. Don’t get me wrong it’s not an easy task!

Riders have to qualify to take part, the qualifying process begins over a year before the Championships take place; eligible riders in any normal BE90, BE90Open, BE100 and BE100Open classes compete to finish in the top few percent of their section in order to receive a qualification spot to one of the Regional Finals that take place up and down the country during August to October the year before the Championships and its from their they qualify. Dedication and persistence is needed over the next year to keep the horse (and the rider) as fit as possible and ready to tackle the course at Badminton.

When the riders get to Badminton they ride their dressage test first, then jump a round of show jumps before heading out on the cross country course. The competition has grown in ‘crowd popularity’ over the years and it was so good to see hundreds of cars on the car parks this year, supporting the grassroots riders. With just over one hundred starters to watch in each section (BE90 and BE100) it is a great spectator sport and on the Wednesday, which is cross country day, all the trade stands and exhibitions are fully open so you really do get your money’s worth.

Out on the cross course you can get up close to the fences, see the ditches, banks and follow the riders all the way round to the Lake and in front of Badminton House. They really have, in a miniature scale, all that the International riders have to tackle. It is lovely to hear the riders encouraging their horses over the fences, congratulating them when they have jumped it well and this really sums up the ethos of the competition - to enjoy your time at Badminton! It wasn’t that long ago that the great Mary King’s daughter Emily presented the prizes in the championships and told the competitors that she was jealous because she hadn’t ridden around Badminton. This goes to show, what a great opportunity The Voltaire Grassroots Championships is.

Over to the scores, Lucinda Mills from Stratford upon Avon rode her own Chaconda Blue to top spot in the BE100 Lucinda scored 25.8 in her dressage and added just 1 penalty in the show jumping phase, a great clear round across country kept her in the lead where she finished on a score of 26.8

“I’m absolutely thrilled, it still hasn’t sunk in,” said Lucinda who has had seven-year-old ‘Noodle’ since a newly-backed three-year-old. “She is show jumping bred but lives for the cross-country. She came out feeling wild in the morning and I nearly couldn’t get on her, she’s never been in this atmosphere before and the crowds took her by surprise, but once we channelled her inner diva, she did a lovely test. She was hot in the show jumping so I couldn’t push her, but she jumped a brilliant clear round. The cross-country course had a lot of questions right to the end, and we did go the alternative route at fence six, but it rode nicely. I never expected this today and am thrilled with her.”

Niamh Richardson was runner-up riding her own Cartown Bonny Bell on a score of 30.6, while Victoria O’Brien was third with Unnamed who scored 31.8.

The BE90 title was awarded to Stirling-based rider Ben Fairbrother riding his mother Jo Fairbrother’s 12-year-old gelding Upper Limit. They finished on their dressage score of 26.3.

“We used to show jump and only changed to eventing four seasons ago,” said Ben who is studying a masters degree in civil and structural engineering at Dundee University. “We took a turn to eventing and we’re really enjoying it, especially being able to come to events like this. ‘Max’ is my mum’s horse and she schools him for me in between events as I’m busy at university. I’ve watched Badminton on the telly for years, but never been down to the event, so it was amazing to see it in person and be in front of the house. Our dressage went really well and we were sat in second overnight. Show jumping isn’t his strongest phase but I managed to use my experience to help him round and we jumped clear. He was also clear inside the time cross-country which felt great. It’s the best I could have asked for.”

Just 0.3 of a penalty behind Ben was runner-up Katie Mathias and Lodor Carl who scored 26.6, and in third on 28.1 was Suzanne Ross and Findatie Bracken.

If you are an amateur rider and enjoy eventing or just like one of the disciplines and love watching horses jump across country, The Voltaire Grassroots Championships is a great event to visit and see amateur riders like yourself take part. You never know they may inspire you to take part. Many horse owners would describe their horse as an ‘All Rounder’ well this is all you need!

There was a huge number of riders representing the Southern part of the country, as well as featuring the winners here we have some great photos of local competitors on the cross country course..

Para Equestrian Rider, Ed Chanin, to Perform at Devon County Show

Ed Chanin, will perform dressage displays on his chestnut, Frankie, on each day of Devon County Show 2024. Ed, who is right-side paraplegic, changed his riding discipline from national hunt to dressage when he eventually got back on a horse two years after a life changing accident.

Ed loves to perform and is devoted to bringing on his latest horse, Frankie, who is four years old and stands at 17.2 hands. ‘He’s a gentle giant and is so eager to learn. He’s really coming along and I’m so excited to bring him to the show to perform in a non-competitive environment where we can both relax and enjoy the moment.’

Lisa Moore, Devon County Show Manager said: “It’s fantastic to have Ed and Frankie at the show. This year, it’s all about making the show more accessible and inclusive for everyone, and this also includes our performance artists. Ed is not only one of the finest dressage riders in the country, but he’s also such an incredibly positive person. Of course, we want him to demonstrate his incredible skills in horsemanship, but we are also keen for him to show our County Show audience, that whatever life decides to throw at you, anything is possible”.
