Very positive shipyard visit with our client & his Rep/Surveyor yesterday. This client specifically came to us at Mortlock Yachts to represent him as his broker, yacht & charter manager. The goal is to build a charter focused yacht and due our extensive charter background, with his Rep/Surveyor (also a former Captain) the Client is in a great position to achieve his goal. We have been carefully & diligently studying, creating and adapting the GA to best suit the purpose of the vessel. Spending a lot of time speaking with yacht Chef’s, Chief Engineers, Chief Stews and other HOD’s, to understand what is best for the yacht and all onboard to achieve a happy working & living environment, safety culture & to deliver the best possible experience & service to the guests. So a BIG thank you to the crew that gave their critical input and I’m very happy to say that all their points have been added to the list and will be added to the build spec!!

A special mention to the client for listening to the right people and wanting to build such a vessel without cutting corners 🙏. One can only hope that we get more clients like him, it’s a pleasure.

Today we are brain storming of what it takes, to what is needed and what is the most practical approach to build the perfect sub 500GT Charter focused luxury yacht. The guest experience, the onboard amenities, stability, comfort, entertainment, water toys, the aesthetics, the smell, the feel. BUT…… What is often forgotten is the ease of service, efficiency and fluidity of onboard duties for the crew, smart and practical use of materials for ease of cleaning and maintenance, service areas (pantries) on every level, exterior & interior laundry areas, the speed, safety and practicality of launching and recovering tenders and toys, ease and available space for the engineers to work in the engine room & technical areas, practical and usable dry and cool stores for the chefs, type and layout of the galley appliances, what materials should be used on galley surfaces & floors, for easy cleaning and long life, galley extraction systems and risk of fires. We’re not even scratching the surface. A lot of planing, practical thinking and appointing the right team is critical to the initial stages before even laying the keel. Mortlock Yachts has decades of practical onboard experience and our team understand first hand what works and what doesn’t when it comes to designing and building the ideal charter yacht.

APEM is a term used by Captains & Deck Officers. Appraisal- Planning-Execution-Monitoring. Effectively it’s a berth to berth plan that identifies potential difficulties & risks. At Mortlock Yachts, because of our background we adopt a similar strategy when it comes to managing our clients and their yachts in order to maximise the potential, whilst plotting a course through smooth waters.
