EPISODE 0041..

My Rer wajeer peers, it's DATE street and not DEAD street..(maqal majiraa)🤣.
It had the most date trees compared to other streets and hence the name derived from there.

This street was the commercial hub (cbd) & the most busiest in the old days.. It had the top creme dela creme hotels starting from my uncle's Nairobi hotel, Naseeb, new garden, kulan, malab hotels (ibrahim seer building) and Wananchi hotel of mzee Abbas Amin. Not forgetting the elite shops Bajoh, Abuukarow tailors, Mabuyu shop, mzee macho nne, m***a rasmi, Mzee adan jiran, bata shoe shop, Mama Ebla omar, mzee kassim aganje, mzee Haji ismail, mzee Abdalla daarte, Mzee Hassan indha gamoon (m.p yussuf hassan's dad),

Yussuf gulled, Jimmy's tawakal icecream. Abdi jiis kinyozi you name it. baraza park was level to this famous street on one end and Salim basabra wholesalers on the other end too.. The street was a hot potato and lit all night till the wee hours when it comes to miraa vendors and hawkers.

Ramadan time was even intense and off the chain, After taraweeh everyone gathered for a cup of 'qaxwa', kitumbu, kashata and other tamtamus. Guys playing ' sabca turub' outside new garden hotel, Some UT teachers and Ap askaris negotiating with mama miraas (mama dowlai & mama suurai) etc about how their salary was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances in short wa andikwe kwa kitabu ya deni "ku qor"🤣 while others listening to the melodious quran recitation from nearby shops.

I felt so sad hearing the name dead street and witnessing it's current plight.. so heartbreaking, despondent and despair. Let's make this street great again. DATE street was the talk of the town and it's history remains in the hearts of old boys & girls of wajir.. for those who didn't know now you KNOW.!!..

Allah yarham all those i mentioned who passed on.

Major General George Agoi died a sad man two years ago. Although most officers always remain silent even if they know very well that they had been treated unfairly, Agoi always told anyone who cared to listen that some jealous people had instigated his early retirement from the military.

I was a small boy in primary school when the 1998 Nairobi bomb blast, but l can still remember the frequent appearance of Major General Agoi on TV screens, coordinating search and rescue operations and giving updates on steps made. Like a true patriot he worked tirelessly without any forbearance.

But according to him , the international recognition he received did not please some powerful individuals. "I sensed all was not well after the rescue mission in which I coordinated all teams," he told the Standard 14 years ago.

Because of the good work he had done, he was invited to attend disaster management seminars in Israel, US and South Africa disaster but was denied clearance by the government. Some invitations were even thwarted before reaching him.

The following year he was retired from the military and appointed Kenya's ambassador to Ethiopia. Even though President Moi said he made the appointment "because of General Agoi's exemplary military career and because he came from an excellent background," Agoi believed it was a polite way of hounding him out of the military.

"When my services in the military were terminated and subsequent appointment as an ambassador, I realised I was being pushed out of Government," he told the Standard.

He served as ambassador for only one term then left to fade into private life. The NARC government had just come to power and it is also possible that he was a victim of regime change as the Kibaki led coalition got rid of Moi's diplomatic appointees.

Agoi further claimed that despite his key role in the aftermath of the 1998 bomb blast, his efforts to attend the bomb blast remembrance were always frustrated.

" I have on several occasions tried to attend the annual remembrance function but in vain," he said fourteen years ago.

Agoi said he was not bitter with anyone but pointed out, "People who wholeheartedly work for the country as patriotic citizens are not remembered like in my case. I have been forgotten just like many others before me,"

"When you have two Cabinet Secretaries storming offices and work stations of clerks in their ministries and addressing mundane issues of driver's licences, logbooks, and passports, then you sadly realise that the system is broken and Kenya is not delivering to the common mwananchi," Ahmednasir.

As the 2022 election draws near, aspirants for the Wajir governorship seat have started criss crossing the vast county to popularise their bid.

Wajir’s former governor Ahmed Abdullahi on Saturday promised the county electorates to restore hope in the county.

He regretted that the county has been marred by alleged corruption cases, court tussles and impeachment drama for over two years noting that this has slowed down development.

Since 2017, Wajir has been making headlines for different reasons.

It has been marred by corruption cases, raids from the anti-corruption commission sleuths as well as impeachment and court cases since 2018.

The recently impeached Governor Mohamed Abdi tried to storm the office armed with a court papers he claimed granted him stay orders.

Abdullahi who was speaking in Wajir town on Sunday, said the effects of bad leadership in the once high-flying northern Kenya county was evident forcing residents to seek services such supply of oxygen for the county referral hospital from neighbouring counties.

3rd February, 2022.

As the 2022 election draws near, clans in Wajir have started forming alignments and realignments as they position themselves for various seats.

Politics in the area revolve around Degodia, Ogaden and Ajuran. Various governorship hopefuls have started meeting elders from different clans.

At least four hopefuls have declared their interest in the seat. They are former Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Ugas Sheikh Mohamed, Nairobi South Hospital proprietor Hassan Mohamed and Environment CAS Mohamed Elmi.

The contest is between the West and East voting blocs. The latter consists of Wajir East and Tarbaj constituencies, while the former has Eldas and Wajir West.

During the 2013 general election, an alliance that brought together the three clans delivered victory, while Fai clan members who won the governorship seat have been meeting to plan how to field a candidate.

Already, Wajir and Eldas have settled on former Governor Abdullahi from the Matan subclan of Degodia to contest for the seat.

In an interview with the Star in Garissa on Monday, Abdullahi said he was humbled by the overwhelming support from residents, saying the final endorsement will be done this year.

“I have been receiving encouraging messages from Wajir residents. I assure them that I will not let them down. We are determined to bring back Wajir on track,” he said.

Abdullahi a strong ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga, is credited with setting up county structures and generally transforming them.

He said he will prioritise education.

Former Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi speaking at function in Garissa said;

“Education is a powerful weapon that has changed society, bred hope and confidence for the future,” Abdullahi said.

Abdullahi commonly known as jiir is now a senior economic adviser on World bank projects to Treasury CS Ukur Yatani.

He regrets that the county has fallen from grace to grass saying the top on his list will be reviving hope

𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞.

28th January, 2022.

The image of H.E Ahmed Ali Muktar was erroneously placed in a news report published on the "Star" newspaper covering an audit report by the Auditor-General for the Financial Year 2019-2020.

It is important to indicate that during the period of the audit report, His Excellency Ahmed Ali Muktar was not the Governor then, thus a rectification on the same is essential.

Governor Ahmed Ali Muktar was sworn-in to office on 18th May, 2021 after the impeachment of Amb. Mohamed Abdi.

This year the Muslim holy month of Ramadan is likely to start on Tuesday, April 13. The pre-sunrise to sunset fast lasts anywhere from 10 to 21 hours depending on where in the world you are.

The fast entails abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual relations to achieve greater “taqwa”, or consciousness of God.

Ramadan begins 10 to 12 days earlier each year. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar “Hijri” calendar with months that are 29 to 30 days long. The next time Ramadan will start around April 13 will be about 33 years from now, or the year 2054.

THE AILING HOSPITAL OF HABASWEIN.
It’s with great concern that the situation in Habaswein General Hospital is aggravating. The Hospital which is serving the residents of Habaswein and the larger Wajir South has no any medication and equipment to serve its patients. It’s so sad that patients are referred to local private pharmacies for medication after consultation.

It has come to the attention of many that the Hospital has now become a “Consultation place’ rather than giving out services. Many patients who were admitted to the Hospital claimed that they were in many circumstance forced to buy expensive drugs from the locally owned Private Hospitals since the Hospital does not have the prescribed drugs.

It’s an alarming situation that this is happening before our own eyes and more attention is given to the Pharmacies than to the General Hospital. For instances, expectant mothers are always referred to the locally well equipped private pharmacies. To our disclosure, the owned private hospitals are owned by some senior staffs at Habaswein General Hospitals hence the patients flocking to the ‘moneyed’ pharmacies.
We therefore, appeal to the authorities concerned and our leaders to come to the aid of this ailing General Hospital.
