I film a small amount of Weddings per year, usually up to 5-6. I've only got 3 in the diary this year (including a Wedding at a Castle in Scotland on New Years Eve!) so let me know if you need any help. Also taking on Weddings for 2024. Rock on! Neil :-)

It’s National Apple Day and this week we’ve been harvesting our Dabinett apples.

Here’s a few fun facts about Dabinett.

🍎 Dabinett apples are great for making cider because they are bursting with aromatic flavour and tannins

🍎 Dabinett is an important cider apple in Thatchers Gold cider giving it a full-bodied flavour

🍎 The Dabinett apple was first discovered as a wildling in a hedge by William Dabinett in Somerset in the early 1900s

Cheers William and Happy National Apple Day!

God bless Glastonbury and the apple trees of course !

As revellers congregate within sight of mystical Glastonbury Tor in Somerset for the 50th anniversary Glastonbury Festival, today's story is a misty soup of Celtic legend and medieval tales about Avalon, the mythical Isle of Apples.

The story includes extracts from the twelfth century writings of Geoffrey of Monmouth and nineteenth century poetry by Lord Tennyson.

Illustrations include detail from the atmospheric study 'King Arthur at Avalon' by Sir Edward Burne-Jones from National Museums Wales in Cardiff, photographs of orchards at Glastonbury from the National Trust and Somerset photographer Bill Bradshaw, and an Aubrey Beardsley illustration for 'Le Morte D'Arthur' by Sir Thomas Malory. Cider apples in Glastonbury Abbey orchard were painted by Somerset cider pomologist and author Liz Copas, who is a member of the International Advisory Panel for Apples & People.

This is our 32nd Apple Story on the Apples & People website, published on the 23rd June 2022.

Wassail night at Barley Wood !

21/01/2022

In January I normally photograph and quite often film a Wassailing for a well known local cider maker. This year the event was cancelled due to Covid so I took the chance to visit and film a smaller, but no less wild Wassail.
So... this is what goes on in orchards in Somerset. On dark nights in January, when blessing the trees and warding off bad spirits !

I had an interesting day filming with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency at the Mumbles yesterday, creating a film for their 200 year anniversary. On the way back I stopped and took a look at the old Swansea Rugby and Cricket Ground. Back in the early 90s I photographed the Springbok playing Swansea in a friendly. The game was important because it was South Africa's first tour since returning from International Isolation. Unfortunately Swansea lost 78 v 4 ! The ground is still there though, a stones throw from the Beach in all it's ramshackle glory.

I've been working in Cheddar at the Quarry and on other Hanson community projects. While shooting in TweenTown (great name ! ) I met Clive, who i found out went to the London College of Printing studying Commercial photography in 1947 !! I was there in 1986/87 (photojournalism). It was lovely to meet a fellow LCP old boy :-) He even helped me out with some pics from the start of the project :-)
