With the first release in our new Countdown ‘Mod Classics’ 7-inch single series - The Fleur De Lys’ iconic cover of The Who’s ‘Circles’ - now in stock and set to ship next week, we are getting super excited about the future of this series.

Each record will be presented in a classy new Countdown housebag, with a circular ‘chequered flag’ monochrome geometric sleeve. Our second title will be announced next week, and over the coming months we will be unveiling a series of astounding cuts on limited 7-inch vinyl. These will include titles by The Action, Mighty Baby, Shyster, The Mike Cotton Sound, Maxine and The Bo Street Runners.

In the meantime, ‘Circles’ comes backed with the band’s never-before on 7-inch cover of the Temptations ‘You Got To Earn It’ and is pressed in a run of 500 units on white vinyl. If you haven’t already, it’s now time to order, as these won’t be coming around again any time soon.

Warehouse Find - Snowboy ft. Noel McKoy ‘Lucky Fellow’. £8 and available while stocks last 👆.

One of the most iconic collaborations in Acid Jazz history was that of Snowboy and the late Noel McKoy. Both had worked together in the James Taylor Quartet, and when Snowboy was looking for a vocalist to realise his take on The Independents / Leroy Hutson classic ‘Lucky Fellow’ he could think of no-one better.

As was the tendency at the time, Acid Jazz released this only as a 12 inch single, and it was over a decade later that Snowboy created the 7-inch edit released in 1995. An incredible re-arrangement, it serves as a perfect tribute to Noel, who died in 2022 at a time when he was doing some of his finest work.

Long deleted, in our warehouse move we found 50 copies, and so we are offering them to you at the bargain price of £8.

Once they’re gone, they are gone!

Chris Bangs - ‘Dream World’. New album out 20 September. LP + Acid Jazz-exclusive CD. Stream the new single ‘My Soul now 🌕👆.

Acid jazz pioneer Chris Bangs returns with a brand new album for 2024, following his early-2023 release ‘Firebird’, and 2022’s collaboration with Mick Talbot, ‘Back To Business’. His latest long-player ‘Dream World’ is set for release on the Acid Jazz label on 20 September – a characteristic font of latin jazz from the maestro producer.

He draws influence from the Mizell Brothers, Wayne Henderson and George Duke – the latter providing direct inspiration, with a cover of ‘My Soul’ opening the record and serving as the thrilling first single - out now on all platforms.

‘It was the sort of beautifully mild early spring day, that London does so so well… Clad in knitwear from duffer of St George, Japanese Big E selvage denim and Patrick Cox lace-up shoes, I walked down the two flights of stairs from my desk at Acid Jazz’s office onto Greek Street, then down Sutton Row onto Charing Cross Road up onto Tottenham Court Road, the short five minute walk to the YMCA. The Brand New Heavies are launching their second album ‘Brother Sister’ in the basement club of that building.

The room was filling up with the familiar faces from our scene. Jay Kay says a quick hello - the first time I’ve seen him since his debut album had hit number one and gone platinum - and that looks like Jaffa (who designed the BNH sleeve) at the bar. Their success was a slow build. It had been four years since the first iteration of the band’s debut album had appeared. But by the time they ended their world tour at Brixton Academy early in 1993, they were a tight, well-oiled hit machine. The new album was already proved, as its debut single ‘Dream On Dreamer’ gave them their biggest hit so far, whilst its follow up - an inspired cover of Maria Muldhaur’s ‘Midnight At The Oasis’ - would go two places higher. The band took to the small stage, and when we left we were all happy that all was right with the world.

It is a great pleasure to revisit and be involved in this reissue project. It still sounds as good as a spring London evening when the living is good!’

New classic T-shirts - By popular demand, we’ve reintroduced two further classic T-shirt designs for the summer. Having quickly sold out of our Navy logo design, here we are with the perennial, original black. We are also thrilled to see the return of the iconic ‘Galliano’ script style, in a cool white-on-navy colour way. Accept no imitations, etc.!

Once again, these are both limited edition for the summer, and pre-order is advised. We have commissioned these specially and we hope to ship on 31 July.

Having announced the forthcoming Mod Classics series on Acid Jazz group label Countdown Records, we were left further reflecting on the label’s roots - founded by Eddie Piller (with Maxine Forte and Terry Rawlings), as an offshoot of Stiff Records, against the backdrop of the Mod Revival of the early ‘80s.

Central at this time were Makin’ Time - a fully fledged Mod outfit, fronted by vocalist and keyboard-player Fay Hallam. Fittingly their single ‘Honey’ was the first 7” issued when we brought Countdown into the Acid Jazz sphere a few years ago, having originally been intended as the first Countdown single when the label was formed.

We still have a few of the black vinyl version of ‘Honey’ - backed with Martin Blunt’s ‘Take What You Can Get’ and presented in the first incarnation of the Countdown ‘laurel wreath’ house-bag.

Ferry Djimmy ‘Rhythm Revolution’ - 2LP Edition available now 👆.

In 2022, we released one of Afrobeat’s most mysterious and rare records - ‘Rhythm Revolution’ by Ferry Djimmy. A chapter in the many lives of Ferry - a former schoolteacher, boxer, policeman, Jacques Chirac’s bodyguard, and Beninese musical visionary - the album was originally recorded in the mid-1970s in support of Benin’s revolutionary leader Mathieu Kérékou. Rumour has it that less than two hundred copies survived a late-‘70s fire.

We originally offered two versions - a limited edition double-LP, with extensive bonus content, and a standard-distribution red vinyl single-LP. We are thrilled to be able to offer the double-LP edition again in limited numbers while stocks last, exclusively from the Acid Jazz Bandcamp site. It is presented in a beautiful gatefold layout with extensive sleeve notes and incredible photographs.
