And so begins the week of leftovers, slowing down and nostalgia of the year gone by. If you're back in work this week, take the opportunity to do some ad hoc activities - chatting about Christmas day, memories from the past, folding up Christmas wrapping paper to be reused, cooking together, and plenty of one-to-ones with those who might be finding this season hard.
Happy almost Christmas, these last days are all about gathering around the fire, sparkling lights and happy memories. Christmas oozes nostalgia, so you might find your residents, or loved ones, especially keen to reminiscence in these few days. Make sure your plans or activity schedule has plenty of space for spontaneity in it, so you can soak up these stories and help your residents, or loved ones, feel safe and at home.

School choirs are a brilliant idea in a care home at Christmas. They sing their songs so beautifully, getting everyone involved. Offer food and drink to the children, giving the residents and school children a chance to chat about their favourite Christmas music.
"We always say our cakes and biscuits are made of love and memories as we reminisce whilst baking."
We love this description from a care home of the process of doing festive cooking together.
"We love making a Christmas pudding, cake and biscuits together – measuring out ingredients, and everyone having a turn to add the ingredients, line the tins and stir. These are made at the beginning of December and we decorate them ready for Christmas Day – they are decorated however the family feels they want to decorate them. We always say our cakes and biscuits are made of love and memories as we reminisce whilst baking. Some of the stories are so wonderful – and some so sad. We hear them all. The smells from the baking of the cake help others who are at the later stages of dementia participate too, as the sensory experience of touch and smell helps them to still be a part of the activity."
