The origins of the company go back 215 years when Orkney was a very different place. While Lord Nelson was busy defeating the French in the Battle of the Nile, Magnus Anderson was fully occupied setting up a bookbinding business in Kirkwall. The business was primarily focussed on the binding of bibles and gradually developed into a professional printing business; the first in the islands and a dra

matic development at the time. Totally different in both size and nature, but The Orcadian of the 21st century continues to introduce new development and stay at the cutting edge of technology. This has been the hallmark of the company throughout its history and most recently The Orcadian newspaper has embraced the digital age by launching an online edition. This means that exiled islanders as far away as Sydney, Australia, can read their copy of the newspaper at the same time as the newsagent on Broad Street. The newspaper’s founder, James Urquahart Anderson – Magnus’ son - and his forebears would find the digital concept impossible to understand but, had they lived in the present age, they undoubtedly would have endorsed it. Throughout the years the firm matured into a fully-fledged publishing and marketing company, producing the weekly newspaper, local interest books and commercial design and print services. It now has its own bookshop and more recently has opened up new business in large format printing (giant posters) and vehicle “wraps, which transform commercial vans into mobile advertisements! Two hundred and fifteen years is an awfully long time but The Orcadian remains committed to readers and customers. It remains a family firm with an Anderson descendant on the board of directors and, most importantly, it remains at the forefront of technological advances to ensure its services are of the very highest standard. The UK premiere of the movie adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir, The Outrun, takes place tonight at the Edinburgh Film Festival! 🎥

The film — which was filmed in Orkney and features many familiar faces — opens up the festival tonight.

Here’s what festival director, Paul Ridd said about The Outrun:

“A vivid and unflinching adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s wrenching personal memoir of addiction, powered by an extraordinary central performance from Saoirse Ronan.

“Addicted to hedonism, drink and drugs, a young woman must wrestle with recovery in the remote islands of Orkney whilst reckoning with her complex family history.

“Powered by a pounding soundtrack, a kinetic visual style and intricate narrative structure, this extraordinarily moving film is redemptive, cathartic and utterly riveting.”

A burst water pipe at Moss Road in Holm has resulted in flooding, and with a closure in place near Mill Bridge. A diversion has been put in place while efforts are made to fix the issue. Further details below 👇

As at 4pm on Thursday 15 August 2024:

Hi folks, we've been advised by Scottish Water that they're heading out to Holm now to close Moss Road in the vicinity of Mill Bridge to carry out emergency repairs to a burst water pipe.

Please note the road is flooded so all through traffic should avoid the area.

You may need to go via Graemeshall if you need access to properties near the Holm War Memorial or are wanting to go over the hill to St Andrews on the B9052.

At this stage we're not able to advise how long the closure will be in place.

When you wish upon a star... 🌟
What fantastic shots by Mark Griffiths of a meteor passing across the sky at Weddell Bay near the third Churchill Barrier on Saturday night. That purple glow you see is just a wee hint of some Northern Lights, which have been particularly strong and frequent this year — albeit hard to spot during an Orkney summer!
