The world’s oldest surviving music from the voices of enslaved people on the sugar plantations of Barbados will be central to a trailblazing textile project to go on display in Gloucester Cathedral this September.

The 18th century ‘slave song’ is a UNESCO world heritage document, held in Gloucestershire Archives. This is the inspiration for Beating Back the Past.

In the Cathedral’s Lady Chapel, Rider Shafique, a Gloucester artist of Bajan descent, and Vanley Burke, known as the ‘Godfather of Black British photography’ will be exploring the impact of the transatlantic slave trade from their viewpoint as descendants of Caribbean enslaved people. Together they consider the challenging themes of torture, inherited trauma and  the ongoing legacy of chattel slavery.  

The exhibition is free to visit and also features the astonishing work of Gloucester's textile artists in the Threads 2024 quilting project.

Gloucestershire Archives has been awarded funding by Arts Council England (ACE) for 'Beating Back the Past' - a project exploring the impact of slavery, using a rare, internationally significant manuscript of an 18th century song.

Beating Back the Past will be central to the Voices Gloucester Threads 2024 exhibition at The Cathedral this September.

The 'Slave Song' manuscript is the world’s oldest surviving music from Barbados and captures voices of enslaved people working in the sugar plantations.

It was deposited with Gloucestershire Archives for safekeeping in the 1970s. The document was also included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, which lists documentary heritage which has world significance, in 2017.

‘Beating Back the Past’ project will include an installation made up textiles, photographs and music to go on display at Gloucester Cathedral in September. The project will also include a schools’ programme and a series of talks.

The installation will be created by Rider Shafique, a Gloucester musician of Barbadian descent, and Vanley Burke, commonly known as the godfather of black British photography. It will explore the impact of the transatlantic slave from their viewpoint, as descendants of Caribbean enslaved people.

Four local stitching groups will also participate in the exhibition to explore their experiences of identity – including race, migration, and neurodiversity – with collective quilt making. ‘Beating Back the Past’ and Threads will be shown in the Cathedral 6-30 September.
