Cube Records is 50 years old today.
In February 1972 FLY Records released its last single, well, from its first incarnation, Georgia Brown’s ‘Turn Out The Light’, backed with ‘I Scare Myself’ (a Dan Hicks song that later found chart action with Thomas Dolby).
The following month Fly released a series of four EPs under the ‘MagniFLYS’ banner; & ’s EPs each peaked at #7 in the British chart; and ’s EPs were just fabulous in their own right.
With Marc Bolan opting to set up his own label the decision was taken to re-launch Fly under the new imprint .
Fly’s label manager went along with the plan but soon got itchy feet and jumped label to Polydor where he had great success relaunching Neil Sedaka’s career.
Recently signed artists were readied for the launch of Cube, including who had been signed in November 1971.
The launch date for Cube Records was set for the 26th of May 1972 and a memo circulated around the Fly Records office listing Cube’s initial releases which focussed mostly on singer/songwriters as represented by Rod Taylor and Harvey Andrews. Also included was The Gasoline Band, a genre defying musical force worthy of that moniker who realistically were never going to be marketable to anyone but lovers of the unexpected groove, oh, and BBC disc jockey/presenter Whispering Bob Harris, the band’s key champion.
Following this initial brace of releases came Joan Armatrading’s critically acclaimed Cube album which forged her own individual path into the world of music.
Some of the Fly catalogue – like the T. Rex album- were reissued under the CUBE imprint for a few years before Cube was rested in 1982.
