It is a great honor to announce that I’ve been selected as a 2024 Thoreau Planetary Solutions Fellow at Cornell University. The Thoreau program at Cornell recognizes visionary leaders working at the intersection of business and the environment, while training undergraduate students as catalysts for change in the green workforce.

As a guest lecturer in the Cornell Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, I pondered what would be the best subject for me to share with the students. Instead of lecturing on my work with edible insects or insect agriculture (something that is already covered quite extensively in the media), or even share my founder story (a lecture I’ve given at numerous colleges), I wanted to challenge myself and think of an entirely new lecture that could potentially inspire the students to discover meaningful exploration, find their purpose, have conviction, work fearlessly, and dream the impossible.

I look forward to sharing my new lecture, “Conquering Fear,” at Cornell tomorrow.

In addition, we’re continuing our third semester of work with Dyson Grand Challenges to provide experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates to apply their business skills to the most pressing societal challenges of our time using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a framework.

The program seeks to build awareness among students of the broader impacts of business on society and, through the process of public engagement, to strengthen their leadership and professional skills. Our goal is to have every student complete a community-engaged learning business experience where the goals and impacts of a hands-on project are critically assessed for their opportunity to build a better world.

A very special thanks to my incredible colleagues at Cornell - Adam Brumberg, Trent Preszler, Lisa Ge**er, and Sarah Wolfolds.

We had a visit last week from the lovely Laurie Stevenson, who is putting on this fabulous insect-based tasting menu at the Dyfi Wildlife Centre, Cors Dyfi Reserve & Observatory on July 5th. It looks like a really great event!

What should we do with insect poo?
What’s a mealworm’s favourite meal?
How do crickets stay warm in a British winter?

No, these are not jokes.

In fact, they are just some of the serious questions considered at UKEIA's first Farmed Insect Protein Research Workshop back in February 2024. Funded by the Food Safety Research Network, we hosted 44 entomologically-minded guests from academia, research, retail, hospitality and farming sectors alongside the Institute for Sustainable Food at University Sheffield and Northumbria University to discuss all things insect.

Calling all Pembrokeshire secondary schools - sign up to send student reps along to our Schools for Species Pembrokeshire conference. We are partnering with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust to bring you this activity filled day where your students will learn about our wonderful native Welsh species and stand together to support nature. Book your free spaces through [email protected]

It's open to any year groups in secondary school.

The aim of the day is to empower students to stand together for nature. It will give them the resources, knowledge and hopefully the motivation they need to support our native Welsh species in their schools and local communities. They will come away having had a fun, educational day and knowing what to do next in order to be a voice for nature.
