Forts of the Medway Towns – Walking Tour

The City of Rochester Society is again running its special walking tours of the Forts of the Medway Towns on Saturday 18th May. Palmerston Forts Society Chairman Phil went on the 10 mile walk last year and highly recommends it.

Our first book, Borstal: A History of Rochester Prison by Ralph Allison, is published on 1st February 2024.

It looks at the 150 year history of the Prison which was originally built to house convict labour, used to construct a series of fortifications to defend Chatham Dockyard against a landward attack by the French. It later went on to be the first ever Borstal Institution, with its pioneering methods of youth justice spreading around the country and the Empire.
