The charity founded by the rugby union legend Doddie Weir has now committed more than £18m to research into the disease that killed him two years ago.

The former Scotland and British Lions international was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), a neurodegenerative disorder, in 2016 and spent much of his remaining years raising funds through his My Name’5 Doddie foundation.

Weir, a lock forward who played more than 60 times for his country, was just 52 when he died in 2022

The rewilding of former arable farmland in central Scotland has led to a dramatic rise in bumblebee numbers.

Denmarkfield, a 90-acre site overlooking the River Tay north of Perth, was used for growing barley until its owners decided to allow restoration of the habitat three years ago.

The charity Rewilding Denmarkfield has recorded a huge increase in pollinating insects between 2021 and 2023.

Within two years the bare soil and stubble on 90 acres in Denmarkfield has been naturally colonised by 84 plant species

Thousands of rental homes are stuck in development and may never be built as investors fear further policy changes from SNP ministers, according to industry research.

Rettie, the property agency, suggested legislative support would be required to breathe life back into the sector and help it to tackle Scotland’s housing problems.

John Swinney, the first minister, acknowledged there was a national housing emergency earlier this year, and 13 local authorities have declared emergencies within their boundaries

Many Scots feel a special connection to Iona. Now they will be linked to the sacred island faster than ever before.

Iona’s 170 residents will now have some of the fastest, most reliable broadband in Europe. So too will its seasonal workers and the 100,000 visitors the island attracts every year.

Harrie Burney, property manager for the National Trust for Scotland, said: “Connectivity on Iona is a real issue and something that’s very important to the population here. There’s been a real buzz around the connectivity improving, so this project will make a huge difference.”

Many Scots feel a special connection to Iona. Now they will be linked to the sacred island faster than ever before.

Engineers have started the painstaking work of laying fibre-optic cables across the cradle of Scotland’s Christianity and the resting place of many of its kings.

The telecoms giant Openreach — funded by the government — says it will carefully dig along existing roads from the 19th and 20th centuries to ensure every home and farm on Iona has ultra-fast internet connections.

There is not much that Jack Blair can do about the beavers causing a flood in his garden. The 84-year-old, who has nothing against the animals, has been “dammed”.

Blair, who lives on the banks of a burn in Perthshire, has had rising waters on the property since beavers got to work nearby.

Rewilded beavers are thriving in Scotland but Blair needs help from the authorities to cope with the effects on his Perthshire home

Harry Potter peered out of the window of the Hogwarts Express to see “mountains and forests under a deep purple sky”.

That is how the author JK Rowling described her boy wizard’s journey to his boarding school in what is widely accepted to be the Scottish Highlands. For years, travellers young and old have been trying to capture the same views from the Jacobite Express, a locomotive that puffs between Fort William and Mallaig over the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

There is, however, a snag: sometimes, the windows on the Harry Potter train are so filthy that passengers cannot see out of them or take photographs. Complaints about the service, which costs £65 standard return, nearly four times as much as the equivalent trip on ScotRail, have been increasing over recent months
