James Watt, the BrewDog co-founder, has launched a “Shadow Doge”, mirroring Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency in the US, because he is “sick of how broken our government is”.

Watt, who stepped down from his role at the craft beer giant last year, announced the project in a LinkedIn post, vowing to “actually do something” given it was “time to find a solution”.

Shadow Doge, which Watt has described as the “unofficial, underground cousin of America’s Department of Government Efficiency”, will take an entrepreneurial approach to addressing wasteful public spending

A former Conservative Party branch treasurer was involved in a £1m VAT fraud and money laundering scheme.

Malcolm Macaskill filed bogus forms to HM Revenue & Customs which grossly overstated the sales from his sandwich businesses to reclaim more than £800,000.

Macaskill also laundered £200,000 of these stolen funds through his local Conservative parties in Glasgow and Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, where he was treasurer and deputy chairman

A priest has resigned after her conscience left her unable to swear a vow of obedience to a bishop at the centre of a “bullying” scandal which has plunged Scotland’s Anglican church into crisis.

The Rev Canon Vittoria Hancock has announced her intention to step down as rector of both St Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Aboyne and St Kentigern’s in Ballater in Aberdeenshire.

In a letter to church members Hancock said her departure, which will leave her without a home or paid employment, had been prompted by disquiet over the conduct of the Right Rev Anne Dyer, the Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney

More than half of all home loans in Scotland last year were for first-time buyers, researchers have found.

The Bank of Scotland said the proportion of all mortgages issued for those stepping on to the housing ladder for the first time was at 51%. That is the joint highest, along with 2020, in the past decade. The lowest proportion was 46% in 2015.

The bank’s analysis showed that there were 32,620 first-time buyers across last year, a rise of 21% compared with 2023
