Carew Castle, the only place in the UK where that the coats of arms of Henry Tudor, Catherine of Aragon and Prince Arthur (Henry Tudor's first son and heir) are seen together. It is almost unimaginable to think how things would now be if Prince Arthur had lived, and Henry VIII not taken the throne

On the 13th January 1879, just before midnight, dense clouds of smoke and multi coloured fumes billowed from the main shaft of Dinas Colliery, the first deep coal mine of the Rhondda Valleys, which had been sunk in 1832. This had followed a terrific explosion that shook not only the colliery buildings but also the nearby houses. It ripped through the mine leaving 63 men and boys dead. Thirty five of them were buried in a mass grave at Llethr-Ddu (Trealaw) cemetery, fourteen of them were so unrecognisable their names are entered in the burial register as 'UNKNOWN'.

On 28th September 1935, Swansea RFC defeated the New Zealand All Blacks 11-3, thus becoming the first ever club side to beat them.

Jack Manchester, the New Zealand captain, was quoted as saying “tell them back home we were beaten by all means, but please, not by a couple of school kids”, a referrence to half-backs Haydn Tanner and Willie Davies, who were at the time, still schoolboys at Gowerton grammar.

Subsequently, on 21st december 1935, five of the Swansea team played in the Welsh side that also defeated New Zealand. They were Claude Davey, Idwal Rees, Haydn Tanner, Harry Payne and Don Tarr.

The win over New Zealand followed victories over Australia in 1908 and South Africa in 1912, making Swansea the first club side to beat the three southern hemisphere rugby superpowers.

Born on this day 1923, from Mold,

Raymond Davies-Hughes, the Welshman who broadcast propaganda in Welsh for the Germans during World War II.

Hughes was an RAF airman whose plane was shot down over Germany during a bombing raid and when approached in a prisoner-of-war camp, Hughes agreed to broadcast propaganda in Welsh. Joseph Goebbels was the Third Reich's Propaganda Minister and he realised the importance and influence of mass media. He knew that a Welsh speaker could reach a new audience, and Hughes went on to work with the traitor William Joyce, better known as "Lord Haw-Haw", who broadcast propaganda programmes in English for the N***s. After the war, Lord Haw-Haw was hanged for treason while Hughes was sentenced to five years hard labour, which was subsequently reduced to two years following an appeal for clemency.
