On 28th September 1935, Swansea RFC defeated the New Zealand All Blacks 11-3, thus becoming the first ever club side to beat them.
Jack Manchester, the New Zealand captain, was quoted as saying “tell them back home we were beaten by all means, but please, not by a couple of school kids”, a referrence to half-backs Haydn Tanner and Willie Davies, who were at the time, still schoolboys at Gowerton grammar.
Subsequently, on 21st december 1935, five of the Swansea team played in the Welsh side that also defeated New Zealand. They were Claude Davey, Idwal Rees, Haydn Tanner, Harry Payne and Don Tarr.
The win over New Zealand followed victories over Australia in 1908 and South Africa in 1912, making Swansea the first club side to beat the three southern hemisphere rugby superpowers.
