COURT: Two Sheffield men jailed for possession of a firearm

Two Sheffield men caught on CCTV using a gun in a ‘grime’ music video have been jailed for a total of six years and seven months in prison.

On Thursday 12 August, we responded to reports of a gunshot being heard in Newfield Green, Sheffield. When attending, police located a bullet casing at the scene of the shooting. After an extensive review of nearby CCTV, two men were identified after being seen on the footage creating a grime music video and firing a single gunshot in the air.

Jarratt, of Wybourn House Road, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to charges of possession of ammunition, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and affray. Yesterday (Friday 8 September) at Sheffield Crown Court, he was jailed for five year and three months.

Marshall, of Sands Close, Sheffield, was sentenced to 16 months after pleading guilty to possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and affray. This jail term will run consecutively with a sentence he is currently serving.

UPDATE: Victim named following fatal stabbing in Sheffield

A man who died following a fatal stabbing in Sheffield on Wednesday (9 August) can now be named as Roger Leadbeater.

Roger, aged 74, was fatally stabbed whilst walking his springer spaniel, Max, through an area of parkland off Shortbrook Close in Westfield on Wednesday evening.

Officers were called shortly before 11pm to reports that a man had been found with serious stab wounds to his chest. The ambulance service also attended and the man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

A 32-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Today (11 August), the man has been identified as Roger and his family members are being supported by officers. They have paid tribute to their loved one, and released a photo of Roger. Their tribute states:

"Roger was a 74-year-old man out walking his beloved dog, Max, when his life was taken in the most brutal and cruel way. Even as Roger lay fatally injured, Max never left his side.

"Roger doted on his family and was a good, hard working and decent man. Even at 74, he still worked for Sheffield City Council, driving children to school with special needs.

"As a family, we can barely believe such a kind, gentle soul could be taken in such a way."

POLICE WARNING AFTER BRICKS THROWN AT PASSING VEHICLES FROM RAILWAY BRIDGE

Unfortunately, The Parson Cross and Southey Team have today had to intervene once again as a group of youths threw bricks from the Five Arches Bridge on Herries Road. Several vehicles have been damaged in the process, however fortunately on this occasion no one was seriously hurt. Someone will be if this continues – if not killed.

Please share this with family and friends whose children are potentially out in these areas on an evening and weekends. These are 'mindless' and 'frightening' incidents which can very quickly escalate into something very serious with very serious consequences.

Working alongside Network Rail and BTP we will be doing all we can to find those responsible - trespassing and endangering lives, including their own. If you witness any offences please call us immediately so we can deploy officers to the location. Anyone with any information in relation to today’s events please call 101 and quote incident 467 16/07/22 or crime-stoppers on 0800555111.

South Yorkshire police:

COURT: Man jailed for sexually abusing teenager

A 34-year-old man who groomed and sexually abused a teenage girl has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Mark Grayson, formerly of Avisford Road, Sheffield, would send inappropriate messages to his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, via Snapchat. He would ask her to meet and when she agreed, he would sexually assault her.

Police were alerted to Grayson’s crimes by the victim’s family, after she disclosed he had been engaging in sexual activity with her.
Investigating Officer Amy Todd, from Sheffield’s Protecting Vulnerable People Investigation Unit, said: “Grayson is a man in his 30s, who befriended then groomed a girl who was under 16-years-old for his own sexual gratification.

“Grayson’s victim believed she was in a consensual relationship with him, such was the extent of his manipulation. We know that this can be the heart-breaking reality of sexual exploitation, young vulnerable people are tricked into believing that what is happening to them is part of a loving relationship.

“Sexual exploitation and abuse can have a devastating impact on victims, and I wish to recognise the bravery of the victim in this case.”

Grayson appeared at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday 30 June where he was jailed for six years and given a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) preventing him from having any prolonged contact with any child under 16-years-old. He was found guilty of two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged 13-15 at trial.

JESSOP WING THANKED FOR ORGANISING WEDDING FOR MOTHER SUFFERING FROM CANCER

The family of a mum who died from cancer just seven weeks after having her second child have thanked the amazing care and compassion staff at Jessop Wing showed and the extra mile they went to organise a wedding and a naming ceremony for her children while she was in hospital.

Hannah Wilson, a much loved mother, wife, daughter and sister, passed away on 25th April aged 41.

Hannah was diagnosed with cancer when she was 30 weeks pregnant, and gave birth to her daughter, Sadie Jessica Rose, a week later on 4th March by caesarean section. During the procedure it was discovered that the cancer was far more advanced than initially thought, and Hannah was given just weeks to live.

Despite this devastating news, Hannah stayed so strong and began making plans for her family (she also had a little boy, Jude, aged 22 months).

She had been with her partner Andrew for ten years, and they had planned to marry one day. With the help of Jessops staff, a wedding and naming ceremony for the children was organising within 24 hours, all to take place within Jessop Wing Hospital.

Hannah’s family said: “The staff had never organised a wedding before, but you wouldn’t have known. They arranged every little detail you could possibly think of; from a cake, flowers, balloons, to wedding favours. They even decorated Hannah and Andrew’s hospital room as a honeymoon suite, with ‘Just Married’ signs and some fizz. Morrison’s donated enough food to feed a small army, the chaplain worked her day off, and the nurses bought so many gifts that we needed a trolley to push it all out of the hospital. It was the most emotional and unique day that could ever be. We cannot thank Jessops enough for the thought and effort they put into this day, while still carrying out their extremely demanding day jobs.”

The family have also set up a fundraising page to raise money for Jessop Wing and other organisations that supported

APPEAL: Motorcyclist dies after collision in Sheffield

Our traffic officers are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage after a motorcyclist sadly died in a collision in Sheffield late last month.

At 12.22pm on Tuesday (30 March), William Jackson was riding his blue Yamaha bike south on Mortimer Road towards the junction with Sugworth Road. After overtaking two other vehicles and returning to the correct side of the road, a bird flew from the offside and collided with William's helmet. This reportedly caused the motorbike to leave the road and travel in to a field, leaving William in a ditch.

Sadly, despite efforts to save him, the 73-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paying tribute today, William's family said: "Billy was a beloved husband, devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He lived life to the full and leaves us far too soon. With happy and fond memories he will be truly missed."

We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch. We’re especially keen to hear from anyone with dash cam footage of the incident or the motorbike prior.

If you can help, please call 101 quoting incident number 387 of 30 March. You can email any footage through to [email protected].

NEWS: Sheffield man found guilty of murder

A Sheffield man has been found guilty of the murder of Jordan Marples-Douglas, who was stabbed to death at his home last year.

Ben Jones, 25, was found guilty by a jury at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday (12 April) after a four-week trial.

The jury also found Dina Aweimrin, 22, guilty of assisting an offender after she helped another man involved in the killing to flee the country.

Aaron Johnson, 21, formerly of Mawfa Crescent, Sheffield, who was also facing a murder charge was found not guilty and acquitted.

The court heard how Mr Marples-Douglas was killed on 6 March 2020, as a result of an outstanding drugs debt, which Jones and another man, went to enforce.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer, investigating, said: “Jones and the other man arrived at Mr Marples-Douglas’ house that night, prepared for a fight.

“Once their victim was alone in the house, they knocked at the back door, lunging at him and forcing their way into the property. CCTV footage clearly shows this initial confrontation and then captures the pair chasing Mr Marples-Douglas past a window and upstairs.

“Whilst this was happening, the victim’s girlfriend received a call from a neighbour who suspected that there had been a burglary. She desperately called friends, asking them to go and see what had happened.

“Arriving at the house, one of these friends found Mr Marples-Douglas, bleeding and seriously injured. He had been stabbed in the chest and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.”

A murder investigation was launched, and enquiries soon led to a timeline being developed by officers. Telecoms enquiries and CCTV footage helped officers plot Jones movements that night and following the attack.

DCI Palmer added: “Jones had been living at his father’s house, and that is where he went after he attacked Mr Marples-Douglas. His father heard him and the other man discussing what they had done. Jones then left and went to the home of a family friend, to whom he confessed the killing.”

He was arrested on 10 March after being traced to an address in Leeds.

Officers recovered two knives as part of their investigation, both were found with traces of the victim’s DNA. Jones’ hat was recovered from the victim’s home.

DCI Palmer added: “The other man visited his girlfriend, Dina Aweimrin, who researched and booked him a flight to Dubai the following day. Using her bank card at Dubai airport, he flew to Somalia, where he continues to evade the authorities.”

Yesterday, Jones, of no fixed address, was found guilty of murder.

Today (13 April) Aweimrin was found guilty of assisting an offender.

They will be sentenced at a later date.

Covid: Sheffield school hair salon plan 'risked spreading virus'

A primary school has been criticised over "totally irresponsible" plans to lay on an "illegal" hair salon.
Staff at Broomhill Infant School in Sheffield were put at risk when they were offered £30 appointments with a professional, the GMB union said.
The union said a "distraught" member had alerted authorities before haircuts went ahead.
A school statement said the "informal arrangement" was immediately cancelled when it was made aware of the risk.
The union said it was told of plans to hold the 3 and 4 March sessions by a worried member.
An email to staff, seen by the BBC, sent on 23 February from head teacher Catherine Timbers says she has asked a former manager of a high-end hair salon to "come into school to cut hair" because "he has a bit of spare time at the moment".
Staff who wanted a cut and blow-dry were encouraged to "sign up", and the note also suggested people may be able to have their hair coloured.
'Very upset'
The "temporary salon", organised as part of the school's wellbeing sessions, was shut down on the first day of appointments after a phone call from Sheffield City Council's environmental health team, which had received an anonymous tip-off.
The school was also contacted by police later in the day.
In a subsequent email notifying staff of the cancellation, Ms Timbers said it was a "shame" the event could not go ahead and suggested the complainant "would like to forego their wellbeing day next time".

GMB regional organiser Sue Wood said some staff were "very, very upset", and the union had been told there were six or seven appointments booked.
Ms Wood said the arrangement was "totally inappropriate" and union members working at the school had called for the head teacher to be sacked.
In a statement, chair of governors Derek Grover said no "illegal hairdressing" had taken place.
"When it was drawn to the head teacher's attention that this arrangement contravened Covid regulations, it was immediately cancelled and no hairdressing took place," he said.
Andrew Jones, at Sheffield City Council, said the authority was looking into "the facts around this case".
South Yorkshire Police confirmed it had spoken to the head who told them the plans had been cancelled.
"As no offence was committed, advice in relation to the current restrictions was provided, but no further action was taken," it said.

Another of them is described as White, slim but muscular with blonde hair and a Scottish, Irish or northern accent. He was wearing a blue Nike tracksuit.

SYP Off road team :

Today the team covered Sheffield North. A busy day with 77 incidents recorded about bikes and quads being used illegally.

We were joined today by the paraffin budgies. We would like to say a big thank tou for their assistance.

The first bike seized today came from Hazelshaw Spring Wood off of Pen*stone Road. A group starburst but one of the riders binned it.

The rider a pro in the sport of enduro had no licence, no insurance and no number plate. The KTM was seized and the rider reported on summons for driving offences. He will probably not get his bike back.

The team then intercepted a group at the Jet petrol station just off Westwood New Road. The group to be fair were good lads. However several had no plates and were dealt with for this. One of the riders on his brand new KTM had no licence no insurance and was reported on summons for driving offences. The bike was seized.

The eye in the sky then directed us to Westwood. A group had been picked up entering the wooded area off of Westwood New Road.

The group was monitored but starburst on seeing officers. One rider was stopped in Westwood. The rider again was a pro in the sport of enduro. His Sherco was seized for no insurance and he was reported for driving offences.

One of the group narrowly escaped onto Westwood New Road past officers but was then pursued with the help of the eye in the sky. The pursuit lasted about 45 minutes around local estates and Westwood Country Park.

The rider was eventually tracked back to an address. He was monitored hiding the bike. Officers then went into an address and arrested the rider for dangerous driving.

The Sherco was seized for no insurance. With it not being road registered he may struggle to get it back. The rider was dealt with for dangerous driving, no insurance and no licence.

The ACU and affiliates are being made aware. This behaviour is bringing the sport into disrepute. Pros in the sport need to be ambassadors not the bad guys.
