Aged 18 Charles Armson volunteered and was quickly on the way to France with the Royal Horse Artillery. He soon progressed to the rank of Bombardier (equivalent to corporal) and for bravery in the field was awarded the Military Medal. Today is our 4th week of remembrance. Women played a significant role during the conflict and afterwards. They also sacrificed their lives usually not in battle but almost more poignantly with illness (TB was still a killer) and by ill luck. But the sacrifice and tragedy was the same. In the Second World War women were not allowed to fight alongside men in the frontline services but they played a vital part in the war effort often close to danger, and often paid with their lives.

This week we remember an Eighteen-year-old awarded Victoria Cross for fighting mid-air blaze. Sgt Hannah was aged just 18 on September 15, 1940 when the squadron ventured across the Channel to attack German barges at Antwerp, almost certainly part of the build-up preparing for an invasion of Britain. As remembrance time comes round again it is rather sobering to be reminded that there are very few combatants from The Second World War still surviving to attend services and memorial events.

War graves are an enduring symbol of the pledge: “We will remember them”. Poignant and moving, whether a scattering of headstones next to a quiet Flanders farm or the sweeping Normandy clifftop with seemingly endless fields of white crosses.

I’ve already visited many local war graves and I am going to bring some of the stories I have uncovered every week until Remembrance Sunday 2025. I won’t just stay locally I will try to include stories from all parts of the UK. The graves are of men and women from all the services and not just frontline personnel. The CWGC roll of honour also lists the many civilians who paid that terrible price in the name of the fight against fascism.
