This month I've seen a few accounts (including one spending £££££) where the pixel events haven’t been set up correctly or are double counting conversions. This means that the leads the agency had been attributing to the campaigns they've been running were over estimated and much higher than they should have been.

We are now in the process of checking all the pixel events & their CRM the leads data to see where the truth lies.

If you're running ads for lead generation, make sure you know that the data you're getting - whether this is in platform or from a report you're sent - matches up with the number of people you have signing up for whateveer you're promoting; this is the ONLY way you can honestly know if your ads are working as you think.

BESTSELLERS? Use these to get people to your site, showcase what you're selling and make them want to join the hundreds of happy customer who already love your product.

MARGINS: Make sure you don't waste adspend on things that cost more to make. If your profit is squeezed on a particular product, is there something else you can use to lure people in - customers might add this to their basket once they reach your website, but use your budget to get the high-value products in front of an audience that wants them

IN STOCK: A massive bugbear of mine; please don't run ads showing products that aren't available right now. This is likely to cause disappointment & even frustration if people click through from the creative to a page and the featured product is out of stock.

What audiences are you using in your ads strategy at the moment?

There has been a lot of talk recently about traditional interest-based audiences not working any more and people moving more to Lookalike stacks and broader Advantage+ choices.

This week I was so glad to still be running interest-based audiences alongside my Adv+ audiences when the performance on these dipped massively. I was able to move spend between the campaigns and saw results soar again within days.

As always, there is never 'one strategy fits all' with ads and what works for one client won't always translate to another account but, for now, I'm sticking with testing all the time & keeping more than one campaign running. Consolidation is generally a good thing for smaller spends but it does mean you're reliant on this all the time. My audience based on demographics and shopping interests is the best performing right now; what audiences are you testing?

It's that simple.

For one of my client's gaining new customers is their top priority, Even so, we still allow a small budget for retargeting.

So many people might see an ad, click through, love what they see but then not complete the purchase. There are numerous reasons for this from something as simple as just getting distracted to deciding they want to wait until payday.

Retarget these people who have taken action on your ads and that small spend might just nudge them back into becoming a customer of yours.

If your ads are getting click throughs but not resulting in sales, it's probably not the ads.

Make sure you take a look at your customer’s journey & really understand what the sticking points might be. Have you had issues with things being out of stock? Are you including reviews and proof of your customers' experience? There are so many factors that can alter a customer’s buying decisions. If you're getting a really good click through rate but this doesn't seem to be resulting in conversions, check the whole process to see what the issues might be.

Make sure your landing pages work in tandem with your ads strategy (& if you have a good ads manager they should be telling you this too!) - ads can only drive people to the page; they can't make them by!

If you aren't using these already, you should be! Your previous customer reviews are GOLD as content for your ads.

Using testimonials that your previous customers have posted helps to build trust in your business, shows people the effect your product (or service) has had on someone's life and gives them a reason to shop with you instead of a competitor.

Find reviews that showcase your business' benefits (free delivery/ range of colours/ quality leather etc) and highlight the things that make you stand out. Try adding them into an image, include them in your copy - select a few words and use these as your headline; there are loads of ways to trial using reviews in your ads but just make sure you give it a go!

Recently I've been working with a few agencies who weren't running conversion ads. This meant that their clients were missing out.

There were a number of reasons for it, from pixel and tracking issues to just not fully understanding how much better their results could have been (for the same budget).

Traffic and engagement campaigns can be good if you just have a small spend, they're part of a bigger funnel or you're just starting out, but long term, conversion ads will be much more likely to get you the results you want.

If you aren't doing this already, something you need to start today is using customer reviews in your ads; in tewrms of content these are GOLD!

Help to build trust with new audiences that doesn't yet know your brand & create FOMO so that others want a bit of whatever you're selling. If you're an ecomm company, use reviews to show people the effect your product has had on a particular customer's life.

Service-based businesses? How did what you offer make someone feel?

Using other people's real words about their experience with you is a brilliant way of giving your customers an insight into what you sell - and hearing from others who have been in the same situation persuades people to invest in your brand so that they can feel the same.

I hate to pour water on your dreams BUT ...

If you really don't want to invest more than £1k a month in your ads, then the chances are you might not be ready for them just yet. Meta has over 3 BILLION users a month so there are lots of opportunities to find the audience you need but realistically this takes time, skills & money.

If you're willing to test some creatives and give things a go without too many expectations, that's fine.

But if you want the chance to make some sales & you're really ready to start scaling your brand, you need to be investing the budget to let Meta do that.

My training packages include a one-hour 1-2-1 bespoke session for anyone wanting help with Meta (Facebook) ads. I'll be honest - I am NOT going to teach you how to set up, run & analyse Meta ads in a 60-minute session.

I worked in PR & Marketing for years before having kids, then retrained and worked as a social media manager, before investing in a Facebook ads course and spending 3-months knee-deep in the theory. Since then I've worked as a freelance ads manager full time for 5 years - and I am still finding out things I didn't know. I am a part of an amazing ads membership (thanks to ) & learn from people in there almost every day.

You already have amazing imagery - wanrt to know how to turn this into ads?

When you're starting to test running ad campaigns, scroll-stopping images are key to winning creatives. Unlike many others, you're already ahead of the curve here with a bank of images ready to be tested. Try adding these to different formats, consider your headlines & copy and you're (almost) good to go!

Make sure that your images are sized correctly for the different placements your ads might appear (if in doubt, try 1080 x 1080 as these generally work across most platforms), Choose images that clearly support the message your ad will be giving your audience - whether it's a specific service or the way they'll feel from a certain service - just make sure that the two work in tandem.

Add your initial budget and begin testing. Let me know how it goes . . .

And this can - and will - be different for everyone. Don’t start advertising unless you know your margins and what you need to achieve . . . want leads? Know what those leads are worth to you & how many you’ll need to convert to make the adspend worthwhile.

Selling a product or tickets to an event? Know what you need to charge to be making a profit. Consider your time, the materials, shipping and anything else that you need to cover in your costings. There’s no point even thinking about running ads unless you know these basic margins and can afford to scale up once you’re hitting your targets.

Don't worry about what others tell you their benchmarks either - your product or service might be priced differently for any number of reasons; concentrate on the real figures and make sure ads can work for you. The other month I booked a mini brand shoot with the amazing . I headed to Shoreditch dreading the day as I hate, HATE being on camera.

Becky was a-maz-ing!!. Not only did she put me at ease and I actually enjoyed the time we spent together but I liked the shots so much I bought more than the original package included.

If I’m honest, I wasn’t that surprised. I’d been following Becky for ages & loved the photos she’d produced. I’d waited sooo long for some new photography (ummm 4 years!) but I knew what I wanted.

Becky was so good at her job, she made me feel relaxed, I trusted her judgement & she got (what I think were) great results.

That’s how it should be when you work with someone - especially when that someone is freelance and working with your baby, your business! If the relationship is right you should totally trust the person and know that the decisions they make are the right ones for you & your business growth. Take your time, get to know the people in the industry you need and make sure you feel good working with whoever it is you choose - it’s better for everyone involved . . .agree?

If you want sales, don’t just run traffic ads!

Yes, getting people to your website is important, but if you want Meta to find the people who are more likely to buy from you, your objective needs to be conversions. Facebook uses your budget to find the people it thinks will complete whatever action you’ve chosen. So if you want sales, set your ads up for this.

Some will recommend driving more people to 'Add to Cart' then retargeting them later, but in my experience going straight out for sales is better all around. The algorithm learns that that's what you want from your ads, your pixel data will be stronger and the audiences you build will be a better source of information. Still not sure? +23x Return On AdSpend!

One of my clients spent around £1,700 on ads. This generated a LOT of leads and - after calls from here sales team - 77 actual bookings.

Her average order value, during this time, was £508 meaning that the value of business booked was just over £39k. She was over the moon with that, but went on to explain there are another 200-odd leads to follow up . . . not bad going for under 2 months' worth of Meta ads!

She does have an amazing conversion rate (something we’ve worked on together) and she admitted herself that the team had been slow getting through the calls last month due to illness & absence. So, in short, things could be even better; time to scale baby!

We decided to keep this offer running, as it's working so well, and instead of simply scaling spend, we've introduced another completely separate campaign. Want to know what happens? Keep an eye on my posts here!
