in 1817, Jane Austen, English novelist, died aged 41. Austen is a celebrated English author known for her six novels that critique the British gentry and explore women's reliance on marriage for social and economic security. Her social commentary, realism, and biting irony have earned her lasting acclaim.
Austen's first four novels—Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816)—were published anonymously and brought modest success but little fame during her lifetime. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published posthumously in 1817. She also began another novel, Sanditon, which remained unfinished, and left behind other writings including the short novel Lady Susan.
Since her death, Austen's novels have rarely been out of print. Her novels have inspired numerous critical essays, literary anthologies, and film adaptations.
Austen's death, following a year-long illness, has been the subject of retrospective medical analyses, with hypotheses including Addison's disease and Hodgkin's disease.

The King James Drawing Room at Hatfield House is named after James I, whose life-size statue stands above the mantelpiece. The famous Ermine portrait of Queen Elizabeth I, painted by Nicholas Hilliard, also adorns the room. Most furniture is from the 18th century, but the Chase Desk, commissioned in 2005, features beautiful marquetry of a 1610 boar hunt. 🎨👑
