When I talk to people struggling in the aftermath of a breakup or fallout, often what blocks them from beginning to heal is the story they’re telling themselves about what happened or making out like the other party was perfect 👀 Rejecting the truth leads to self-abandonment and self-criticism.

My brother joined me again for the latest episode of The Baggage Reclaim Sessions podcast 🎧 We talk about something that so many people grapple with: that feeling that there’s ’something about you’, that you’re ’not good enough’, why it’s there, and how we’ve challenged these painful notions. When we’re in a cycle of breaking up and getting back together or staying in an unfulfilling or shady relationship long past its sell-by date, getting compassionately honest with ourselves is crucial. Becoming more aware of the emotional baggage driving our pattern and what isn’t truly right for us puts us on a path to setting ourselves free and enjoying more loving, intimate relationships.

The likes of therapy and coaching can be invaluable in helping us process our past, understand and know ourselves, and cultivate healthier relationships and choices. Healthy boundaries are critical as a result. Part of the reason we might work with a therapist or coach in the first place is precisely because we’re struggling with boundaries so the therapeutic relationship needs to help facilitate that. And if that’s not possible and, in particular, not being encouraged, we’ll do ourselves more harm than good if we continue that relationship.

Don’t let someone be the proverbial dog in a manger in your life: hogging up your bandwidth, blocking you from moving on… but not actually willing and able to step up and be the partner you need and want in a mutually fulfilling relationship with love, care, trust and respect.

Relationships help us heal, grow and learn… if we allow ourselves to recognise what they’re trying to tell us.

You’re allowed to say yes and no, and you’re allowed to live by your values and honour your needs, desires, expectations and, basically, your boundaries.

Those feelings of unworthiness, of not being ‘good enough’ track all the way back to childhood. We internalised certain events, maybe a sense of neglect, lack of connection, attentiveness and feeling genuinely wanted and cared for as something we provoked. Like if we’d just been a better kid they’d have been a better parent. Emotional baggage is real. Let go of the fantasy that we can make people, including parents, spontaneously combust into someone else if we’re ’pleasing’ enough. Set yourself free.
