🧠
Researchers from the University of Helsinki and Stanford University investigated whether transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) could transform the way depression is treated, especially in patients who do not respond to more traditional methods such as medication.

“Magnetic stimulation is an effective treatment for patients whose depression is not alleviated by medication. However, about half of these patients do not receive significant help from TMS. The biomarker we studied may help predict who will benefit from the therapy. In the future, it may also be possible to tailor the treatment individually,” commented postdoctoral researcher Juha Gogulski from Stanford, University of Helsinki and Aalto University.

🥗 The keto diet, arguably one of the most popular diets, has scientifically shown that it impacts memory in mice. However, new research from the University of Chile helps explain why and how the diet benefits brain health and ageing.

“Our work indicates that the effects of the ketogenic diet benefit brain function broadly, and we provide a mechanism of action that offers a strategy for the maintenance and improvement of this function during ageing,” said the study’s senior author, Christian González-Billault, PhD, who is a professor at the Universidad de Chile.

📢 Researchers at UCL and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) have developed a new blood test that could identify children with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a hereditary heart condition.

Up to 1,000 children in the UK are living with a hereditary condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which causes thickening of the heart muscle. There is no cure currently and can cause sudden death in children and young people.

🌟 Glowing marker dye that sticks to prostate cancer cells could help surgeons remove them in real life. 🌟

Prostate cancer is cancer of the prostate gland. It is currently the number one cancer seen in men in the UK.

The researchers injected marker dye into 23 men with prostate cancer who were undergoing prostate removal surgery. The marker dye found areas of cancerous tissues not picked up by the naked eye or other clinical methods.

Future of Infection Diagnosis: AI Camera Scans for Vital Signs 📸

Measuring a patient’s pulse, breathing, and blood pressure by scanning their face with an AI camera could be the future of infection diagnosis.

Stefan Malmberg, the thesis author, highlighted the benefits: "The new AI method means faster, more convenient measurements for patients, easier processes for healthcare providers, and reduced risk of infection spread through equipment." This type of research is vital for advancing healthcare technologies.

🏃‍♂️💓 Research highlights the power of exercise in preventing heart disease in later life! 🏃‍♀️💓

A recent study published in the journal Heart suggests that just 20 minutes of daily exercise in early old age (70-75 years) can significantly reduce the risk of major heart disease, including heart failure, in late old age (80+ years). This moderate to vigorous activity includes walking, gardening, cycling, and swimming.
