We’re not too sure about leather-bound books or rich mahogany, but is kind of a big deal in our book and we’re extremely grateful for him taking time out to write this awesome column in our first independent issue. Be sure to check out his new podcast, Very Vehicular. Photo:
Here’s just a small insert of his ramblings. Be sure to read it in full in the December issue. “Maybe it was the pandemic’s fault. But one night, between doom scrolls, I started searching Mk1s and eventually found a Rallye Green Swallowtail on Marketplace. It turned out to be owned by Corey Longstreth, a friend of many friends. I drove over to his place. I checked out the car, then despite not really knowing each other, we chatted for hours, as many elderly dub heads can do. We reminisced about the old days, complained about the new generation and became fast friends due to our shared disgruntlement and understanding of rare Mk1-3 parts. It reminded me of what I loved and very much missed about the VW scene. I bought the Rabbit. It had to be towed home.”

The magazine’s recent acquisition has been remarkably positive. In fact, the only real downside - and it’s a big one - is that we couldn’t take our trusty ‘ad girl’ Sarah with us. ‘Churchy’ or ‘Challsy’ (depending on what period you met her) has been a pivotal part of the PVW team from day one. That’s right, 28 years!

She may no longer be a spring chicken (brave - All) but I dare anybody to do battle with her in business, on the dance floor or at the bar! She will out sell you, out dance you and - providing the Prosecco supplies remain good - drink you under the table, too (often all in the same afternoon).

Her approach to selling may be slightly unorthodox to some, but it’s safe to say the magazine wouldn’t be where it is today had it not been for the great relationships Sarah has formed with our advertisers for nearly 30 years. Well, that and the fact she won’t take no for an answer…

Is this the end? We hope not. So, we won’t say goodbye, because our door will always be open. In all the years I’ve worked with Sarah, I’ve never known her to shed a tear, but she did the day we realised she couldn’t move across with us. This shows just how much the magazine and the scene has meant to her. “PVW has been my life for 28 years. Nobody else has ever sold on it - even through three pregnancies! I’m obviously devastated, but just relieved the mag is still in safe hands. Please look after it!”

We’re certainly going to miss her - Jamie and I never signed up for ad sales! I’d personally like to wish you all the best for your future endeavours. Never change, believe in yourself, think big and reach for the sky. I’ll see you on the flip side…

When we took over the title recently we agreed it was important to involve you guys in some of the bigger decisions. The iconic Performance VW logo has evolved considerably over the years. First question is, should we sell PVW decals on our shop as many of you have requested them and it’s important we raise brand awareness? Perhaps they should be different to the sticker we apply to feature cars in order to retain exclusiveness? Second question, we’ve been toying with the idea of adding ‘Magazine’ to the logo in the future (bottom right) so that those unfamiliar with the brand who see it on flyers/banners get what it’s all about. What do you all think? It’s easy to think that everybody has heard of the magazine but they haven’t, yet… 😜
