Wishing that you’ve all had such a wonderful Christmas and New Year from my (growing!) family to yours! 🌲

Thank you so much for all the support this year on here and in person at events🥰. It all really does give me so much joy and I really hope it gives you inspiration and some lovely days out to enjoy with your family. As always I absolutely love to hear about them.

I am so grateful to for capturing the start of my third pregnancy during our lovely Christmas Tree Photoshoot. I can tell you that these photos are going to be so cherished💕. I didn’t have bump pictures with my other two - perhaps it was that this one took longer, perhaps it’s that this will be my last, all I know is that I am soaking in all the memories I can! Did you have a maternity shoot? Would love to know your whys and thoughts.

The Elves and the Shoemaker at Barnfield Theatre

An enthralling show, perfect for a young audience! The Elves and the Shoemaker was really enjoyable with songs, a heart warming storyline and audience interaction - the runaway biscuit scene was my son’s fav!

The show is 50 mins with no interval. For younger children take snacks for after 30ish mins they generally get a little wriggly! The recommended age is 3-7 but I think my 8 year old would have also enjoyed it. The show is performed by 3 cast members and their puppets - all part of .theatre company which is Exeter based.

We went to their pyjama evening performance (the morning show was sold out so get there quick!) and then enjoyed a lovely little wander around the lights at my son’s request.

A lovely mummy son date - thank you for the PR tickets.

On at The Barnfield Theatre until 24th December. A wonderful Christmas treat.

Sun Dec 22nd: 11am or 2pm
Mon Dec 23rd: 11am or 2pm

70 mins performance. All ages

About the show:
This festive season, join Dayzee and her dad in the not-so-far-off-future, a magical future where bicycles fly, flies talk and mangrove forests sing. Future Tourism is a booming business and the wormhole Dayzee discovered in her Dad‘s Pigbat shed has come in very, very handy. Of course, visitors from the past do have to get their memories wiped before returning home (to avoid a catastrophic rift in space time), but that doesn‘t seem to be putting them off. The future is very cool…
But when a stowaway from 2024 misses the last shuttle home. Dayzee finds herself on the adventure of a lifetime!

Cinderella Pantomime
Wow - what a panto! This is one for the whole family: where the parents absolutely enjoy it as much as the kids! Let me know if you love a panto at Christmas or if this is a new one for the list. 🎭

The energy of the show was tremendous, the script with local adaptations were perfect (meet Prince Farming & Countess Wear as well others) and the pop songs gave it even more of a feel good vibe.

Of course there were the panto essentials: some ‘oh no he isn’t’, a proper job sing-off between the audience, a dazzling and witty fairy Godmother, a brilliantly wicked Countess and of course plenty of slapstick humour from the sisters who had young and old members of the audience in stitches (as well as many jokes just for adults to snigger at!)

While it was ALL brilliant, I think what I loved the most was how much the cast were visibly enjoying themselves as much as the audience!

Absolutely recommend for a great family trip out as soon as your children are able to sit through and enjoy the performance! My youngest was 5 and I was a little worried about if he’d manage to stay awake for the whole thing but I needn’t have been - he was enthralled and finding it hysterical! The teens sitting next to us enjoyed it too, as well as our friends we bumped into who had come on a date night. There aren’t many shows that can please everyone so much.

Child review! “I thought it was really really good and very funny”

Cinderella is co-produced by  and and showing at Exeter Northcott Theatre until 5th January.

Any questions - ask below!

Getting there
Bus: I was surprised to learn the Number 4 bus from Exeter St Davids Station stops right outside Northcott theatre door and it pulled up just as we came out after the show! Perfect timing.

Walk: If you are opting to walk, be prepared for a steep hill!

Car: parking is free after 4pm at all car parks on campus, except Car Park B, but allow plenty of time to find a space!

🌲Christmas Tree Farm Photoshoot Meet up🌲

A fabulously festive meet up this December: Just 8 families have the exclusive opportunity for this meet up with an affordable mini photoshoot, by Tara Paine, of you and your little one(s) among the magical Christmas trees at Dartmoor Christmas Tree Farm.

Expect a fun day out, getting to know a small group of like-minded parents over mulled apple juice and mince pies and fabulous photos too. The children can enjoy being in nature and playing with bubbles and (a very close to us) hide and seek among the trees. During this time, Tara will quietly take each of us off for a personalised few minutes in the Christmas trees for some individual photos. There is no set timed sessions – it’s just a relaxed meet up with the added bonus of beautiful pics too. This means we can gauge when each child is ready to have their picture taken, work around naps and feeds and whoever is ready can go next. Grandparents, partners are all very welcome or enjoy it as a special time for you and your little ones (please just let me know numbers of people attending on checkout so I have refreshments for everyone!)

These events are lovely and the photos will capture such gorgeous memories of you and your little one and they make Christmas gifts too!

STORIES IN THE DUST
The sun beats down on two travellers, journeying across a mysterious land in a contraption they’ve built themselves. They sing, play games, and tell stories inspired by a collection of precious things they’ve gathered from a time gone by.
With live music and puppetry, Stories in the Dust is a funny, heartfelt and hopeful eco-fable that takes you to another world. A world where an ancient book guides your way, a drop of rain changes everything and a mighty lion holds its secrets in an old clay pot.
Will our intrepid explorers make it? They’re full of ideas and full of hope but dangerously low on baked beans.

Flower picking & Vintage Tea Meet up
Thursday 2nd May 10-12

Join us for an absolute treat – picking your own beautiful bunch of flowers, just like this one, at and enjoying a vintage tea in the barn with gorgeous views and, of course, great company!

My favourite place to be last year was wandering among beautiful flowers at Amelia’s Flower Farm. You too can be surrounded by beautiful blooms, choosing your favourites and creating your own stunning bunch of flowers to enjoy in you home for the next couple of weeks. For the Little Devon event, it is even more special as we continue the day with a delicious tea and cake served in vintage crockery where we can all chat, laugh and get to know each other.

As ever, your little one(s) are most welcome at the event. This event is open to all: parents of babies, toddlers and preschoolers. It’s also a glorious day out for Granny or friends without children to join us too.

What to expect
💐A welcome cuppa by the old apple tree – we can get to know each other and get ourselves sorted and relaxed (I know how leaving the house with little ones can be!)
💐Enjoy a relaxing experience meandering through Amelia’s field of beautiful flowers picking your very own blooms to take home and enjoy. (The flowers are glorious and all grown lovingly without chemicals and pesticides).
💐A vintage tea party together – delicious cupcakes and tea/ coffee / sparkling elderflower and a chance to get to know one another.
💐A small play area set up for the children suitable for their age.
💐Super-friendly fun atmosphere!

Can’t wait - let me know if you can join us.

Digital detox. I had a bit of an unintentional social media semi-detox over Easter Holiday. I shared the odd story but that was it. Sorry for not sharing more days out in Devon ideas- especially with the weather being so wet. But I have to say, I really loved it.

Here’s just a couple of things I noticed and did in the evening instead:
📕 My attention span grew and I was actually able to read a book! Normally I only read a page or two then look for a distraction - I need the dopamine hit that i’m so used to getting constantly from my phone
🧶I even crafted - I’ve started cross stitch which I’m really enjoying. I love crafting but rarely make the time to do it. Why? Social media sucks me in!!
🎞️ I also watched a film or two in French with English subtitles.
😫 I didn’t feel the pressure to be doing things that others were. I absolutely LOVE instagram for getting ideas, but it can make me feel overwhelmed with all the things I feel I should be doing but just aren’t. Massive FOMO over here!
🖥️ I wasn’t on my screen the whole time! (Obvious but true!). I find when I’m at home, I get out my phone and ‘check’ instagram at all sorts of odd moments - even just walking up the stairs! Why?! I don’t know! If anything comes in my inbox, I don’t do it then, so it just becomes another thing on my mental list. I’m getting acutely aware as my daughter gets older and closer to the age of wanting her own phone how much I am on mine.

Now, I’m home I want to just be a bit more mindful of my habits with my phone. I still love this community and sharing great local days out, events and ideas so I’m not going anywhere!

What are your phone habits and have you ever cut down or had a detox? And most importantly how did you feel?

Little Devon

The online magazine for everyone who has these things in common: a love of our glorious county, Devon, with a desire to explore it more and a little one, to entertain, to nurture and to have fun with. Life is busy. That is why we need good, honest and interesting articles to help make daily life a little easier and sometimes inspiring. Whether it’s discovering a hidden gem café with excellent coffee and cake along with space for a whole NCT group and the buggies galore (so much stuff!) or a woodland walk with a blissful picnic spot – we’ve got it covered. Our children are privileged to grow up with sandy beaches, moorland national parks and medieval towns in their back garden. We, at Little Devon, hope to do the hard work so you can simply pack the car and get out to explore our glorious county, making fantastic memories with your little one. We will also throw in some wonderful goodies made right here in Devon and, in time, articles that feed the mind and help us to stay sane too.
